It does make sense, Dragonic terms like Wyrm and Lindwurm incorporated the word "worm" into it on a phonic level.

Indeed; if I recall correctly, the ancients didn't differentiate greatly between what we call "worms" and what we call "snakes", and dragons have serpentine heritage (the old word "drakon" referring to a type of snake, I believe).

So...apparently in my earlier post I greatly underestimated the utility of wings.

The link above goes to an article where a scientist observed bats doing all sorts of things with their wings besides flying. Not only can they swim and climb, but vampire bats can apparently run on a treadmill.
I would call this evidence that the wyvern body structure really is more realistic than the typical dragon body. There would be no reason to have the extra forelimbs in addition to the wings.
