How to get in to the Trope Repair Shop?

The trope repair shop is always full, it seems to me. I've been checking back for months, and I've never seen a opening.

I've got several projects I'd like to get in there:

How, though? Do I just have to constantly stalk the Trope Repair Shop and hope that some blue moon they'll be an opening? Is there some sort of waiting list I could get on?

[up] Assuming you've done a wick check, the TRS Queue is pretty much how everyone gets in now. Just list yourself and the trope (you can also optionally put your OP in there and even let others launch it for you if you want) and you'll be pinged to the meta thread when a slot opens.

If you hang around a lot you'll see a lot of threads do close, people are just doing the work weeks or months in advance to get a slot. So yeah, the only real way to make sure you get a slow aside from just constantly stalking the forum is to do the work in advance, add yourself to the queue, and then do the work to help other threads close.

[up] You're welcome. Although I will note that your OPs lack wick checks—please consult How to Do a Wick Check as the mods are unlikely to open your threads without them.

What would a wick check mean for a duplicate trope?

For the misuse one, I'm working on it now.

[up] There's different ways of wick checking duplicate tropes—you can check for usages of both on the same page, overlapping usage, etc.

Admittedly I haven't really done a Duplicate Trope thread before so I'm not the authority here, so I'll refer to someone else who shows up.

Does a duplicate trope need shared examples? Isn't it enough the content of the tropes is the same? Or am I misunderstanding that?

It depends. Sometimes I do thinks like check to see if each trope is applied to each work I check, but usually I just try to sort based on which ones could be moved to the other trope... duplicate tropes are complicated, but you can pretty much go about it however you want if it gets the results.

It's important that duplicate tropes have examples checked, because if they have descriptions that mean they should be duplicates but in practice they're being used differently, then the way to fix it might be to redefine to fit the misuse instead of merging the two.

For what the wick check of a duplicate trope might look like, here are some examples from completed TRS threads: Vengeful Widow (duplicate of Crusading Widower, Pyrrhic Villainy (duplicate of Pyrrhic Victory), Was Actually Friendly (duplicate of Not Always Evil)

[up]Conversely, if two tropes appear to be duplicates based on their descriptions but are actually used differently, maybe they were always (or originally) different and one or both of them has a bad description that doesn't make the distinction clear.
