    Original post
Despite being created almost a year and a half ago, the trope has horrible ZCE problems, with most examples amounting to "does this" or "AKIRA shoutout lol".

From the wick check, out of 44 examples, only six had proper context: 27 were ZCEs, 5 were misuse for things that weren't bikes, and 6 just linked to it as a verb.

Personally considering the trend started with AKIRA, and most of the uses are references to AKIRA, I think this would be one of the few times Trope Namer Syndrome would be useful.

    Has context
  1. Madlax: The title character introduces herself to Vanessa by riding a sports bike in-between her and a bunch of goons sent to kill her, then gunning them all down one-handed — all while side-sliding to a stop.
  2. Pokémon: The Original Series: In the episode "Stealing the Conversation!", a looser than usual Officer Jenny goes at full speed with her motorcycle, jumps from it, takes Pikachu from the hands of Team Rocket and lands in her bike, making the slide with style. Maybe?
  3. Kurozuka: The anime homages the bike slide during an action scene in episode 10, where Kuro, wielding a sword while on his motorcycle battles one of Hasegawa's gunship during a chase scene, which leads from a highway overpass to the top of a collapsing building, with Kuro sliding down the building's side before hitting the asphalt, skidding sideways across the road where Kuro is prominently featured in the center of the screen. Grammar is a bit wonky, but otherwise this is good
  4. Friday Night Funkin': B-Side Remixes: The menu art for Week 7 shows Tankman skidding to a stop on his motorcycle behind Boyfriend and Girlfriend, dust trailing from the wheels and his foot, bike facing sideways from the camera. Just wanted to note that this is an example I wrote before deciding to do this check.
  5. Steven Universe: The Movie: Connie arrives to fight Spinel, and launches into the room riding on Lion, who lands and slides across the floor, emulating the bike slide.
  6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003): The opening references the AKIRA scene via Raphael launching out of the Battle Shell on his bike and skidding to the side.

    ZCE
  1. AdventureTime.Tropes S To Z
    • A bikeless example can be seen with Marceline in the episode "Go With Me" where she and Finn go running with wolves, and when hey stop, Marceline does a pose that pays homage to this trope.
    • There's an animated gif where Finn was mounting Jake as a motorcycle making this pose, even appearing on Crunchyroll's article. However, it's confirmed this is a fanart gif instead of coming from the series. If it's fanart, why is it here?
  2. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children: During the bike chase of Loz, one of the Terrible Trio of the movie and remnants of Sephiroth, he changes the way with his Power Fist making this shot inside a tunnel. ...what?
  3. Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V: There's a scene in the first episodes where Yuya makes this bike slide (at least in the manga). Example is duplicated on Franchise.Yu Gi Oh
  4. Yu-Gi-Oh!: Bonds Beyond Time: The movie has one scene where Yusei makes a rescue in his Cool Bike and escapes from the shadow realm to make this slide in a rooftop. Example is duplicated on Franchise.Yu Gi Oh
  5. Characters.Persona 5 Adult Confidant AU: Her All-Out Attack finishes with her doing an Akira slide.
  6. Characters.Street Fighter IV: Badass Biker: Her reveal in 6 has her AKIRA-slide her way onto the scene before hopping off to face her opponent. Similar example on ShoutOut.Street Fighter
  7. Characters.V Shojo: She performs one in her lore video after narrowly avoiding an unconscious Nazuna.
  8. Nope: A rare live-action example, performed by Emerald when arriving at Jupiter's Claim on the TMZ reporter's motorcycle with banners attached to it in order to lure Jean Jacket.
  9. X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Even Wolverine pays tribute to this scene, where during the "fight" against the helicopter, he stops his bike in moving and changes the way with his claws on the ground, making this iconic pose for the movie. Grammar bad
  10. Anti Magic Academy The35th Test Platoon: There's a scene where Ouka makes this bike slide in the city at night.
  11. Bakemonogatari: The scene also was homaged in the episode 3 of Nisemonogatari when Araragi makes this slide with his bicycle instead of a motorcycle.
  12. AKIRA: AKIRA is the obvious Trope Maker and Codifier of this trope with The Movie, but this was made way before this, being part of the same scene in the 1982 manga, which is a part of a panel instead a complete shot as seen in the anime. This is the Ur-Example, and it has no context. Help.
  13. GTO: The Early Years: In the fourth OVA, Yasha does this when sliding to a halt after leading Ryuji on a motorcycle chase, just before he hits a tripwire.
  14. Gintama: s one of the biggest parody series been made, Gintama can't be out of this fad, having at least one shot of this slide in his scooter. IN MEDIEVAL JAPAN.
  15. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!: Shout-Out: Episode 10 has Kanamori pulling off Shotaro Kaneda's iconic sliding motorcycle stop from AKIRA with her bike. No context pothole
  16. Recap.SM G4s Mario Bloopers Breaking Luigi: Meggy does this when she and SMG4 finally arrive at Wikipedia.
  17. Recap.Big City Greens S 2 E 19: Shout-Out: After clearing the ramp at the end, Cricket does the Sliding Bike Stop from AKIRA. Example is duplicated on the main Big City Greens page.
  18. Recap.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 1 E 4 Meet Casey Jones: Shout-Out: Raph does the obligatory Sliding Bike Stop from AKIRA.
  19. Recap. The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee S 1 E 30 The Bad Boy Bobby Daniels: Shout-Out: With Scratch's help, Patty does the famous Sliding Bike Stop from AKIRA on her scooter.
  20. Splatoon 3: The Reefslider, an inflatable pool shark ridden like a motorcycle, skids to a halt in this way either at the end of its path or when manually made to.
  21. THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls: Shout-Out: Miyo Harada's second SSR card has her performing the Sliding Bike Stop from AKIRA.
  22. Nightmare City: Green Cat does this to escape Red Cat, crashing into a building where Red Cat doesn't have room to leap in after him.
  23. Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures: The episode "Blurrg" has Aree doing a sliding stop on a Speeder bike, during one of many attempts to round up the loose Blurrgs. Like the majority of the attempts, this one fails. Partial context. It at least says there's a slide, but fails to describe it.
  24. Batman: The Animated Series: In "Robin's Reckoning", Robin arrives at the pier on his bike just in time to save Batman from Tony Zucco, power sliding to a stop as he does so in a very clear homage to the AKIRA anime. It is famous for being one of the first (if not the first) references to this shot, at least outside Japan.
  25. Gargoyles: In one episode, Brooklyn goes in a motorcycle (with a complete biker look) and makes a Badass Biker demonstration by skidding his bike in this pose.
  26. Star Wars: Clone Wars: Obi-Wan also pays tribute to this pose, making a stop like this after destroying Durge's speeder bike.
  27. The LEGO Ninjago Movie: Shout-Out: Nya demonstrates her Badass Biker credentials by pulling off THE Kaneda bike slide, known here as the Sliding Bike Stop.

    Misuse
  1. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann There's a debatable bikeless scene being made in the first episodes, where Yoko brakes in her own feet, making a pose with her BFG very similar to the one Kaneda does. Trope is explicitly about a bike stopping.
  2. Characters.Pokemon Adventures Allies: More like a sliding trailer house stop. This is how she makes her entrance when the Gym Leaders in Wyndon are worried about how they could go to Hammerlocke. In addition to ZCE, this is about bikes. This example is also duplicated in Characters.Pokemon Adventures Galar for some reason.
  3. Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department: Despite not having a bike to begin with, Thunderbird does a good impression of the Akira Bike slide when facing the Magical Girls in episode 3.
  4. You're Under Arrest!: In the episode 17, there's a scene where an old Badass Biker called Daimaru Nakajima claimed to be the best biker out there, and makes this bike slide to demonstrate it.
  5. Kamen Rider Revice: Shout-Out: The cover of My Brother Is A Kamen Rider features Daiji doing Kaneda's signature Sliding Bike Stop.

    Wiki Word as Verb
  1. Five-Second Foreshadowing: Nope:
    • In the climax after Em does her Sliding Bike Stop in Jupiter’s Claim, you can see the park’s exit sign in the background that reads “So Long Cowboy.” In the next scene she begins releasing the giant inflatable cowboy that would be used to bait Jean Jacket into position for a picture and then kill it.
  2. Game of Chicken: Shotaro Kaneda, as the leader of the Capsules, plays chicken with the leader of the Clowns in Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA. This is done on a highway of Neo-Tokyo upon motorcycles at 150 kmh (88 mph). The Clown flinches first and skids out of control when he swerves away, while Kaneda executes his famous and much-referenced Sliding Bike Stop.
  3. Characters.Nope: Badass Biker: She demonstrates her skill with motorbikes with a Sliding Bike Stop before killing the alien once and for all.
  4. THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls - Cute Type: Goggles Do Nothing: Her second SSR has a pair of goggles that just hang from her neck even in the Awakened illustration where she’s performing a Sliding Bike Stop on her motorcycle.
  5. Pokémon Games: When it was revealed that the boxart Legendaries were basically motorcycles, many comparisons were made. Fans in Japan made comparisons to Kamen Rider (mostly Kamen Rider Ryuki), while overseas fans made comparisons to Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds. Fanarts of the legendaries doing the Sliding Bike Stop from AKIRA are also common.
  6. YMMV.Akira: Kaneda's Sliding Bike Stop, homaged in all kinds of media for three decades with no sign of stopping.

Possibly. I fear ZCEs might still be an issue though—I've seen homage tropes (like Spaghetti Kiss) where ZCEs are still a big problem—that particular instance came up in Date Crêpe's TRS.

Either rename or cut.

Since the two major usages of the trope seem to be "wow cool motorcycle trick" and "AKIRA homage" without much else giving it meat, I think it should be disambiguated between Badass Biker and ReferencedBy.Akira.

ETA: The latter page already collects examples of "does the bike slide".

Exactly how much context would we need? Some examples in the "needs context" section mention a slide but "fail to describe it" but some examples don't seem that much different than the examples with context. I mean, the Batman example mentions "power sliding to a stop" and is labeled as needing context, but the Steven Universe one that says Connie "lands and slides across the floor, emulating the bike slide" is labeled as full context.

Is the camera angle that necessary to describe? If so, maybe this is overly narrow. Maybe what we need to do is expand this beyond the visual reference to AKIRA. Badass Biker also doesn't always cover this because that's a character trope, and several of these examples are just characters who temporarily ride a bike in a cool way, not necessarily defined by being a cool biker.

Is expansion even beyond bikes a possibility, if the image of a sliding stop is utilized in a similar "stopping urgently but still looking cool" fashion?

In any case, I disagree with the disambiguation as I think there's an actual trope here and the disambiguation feels oversimplified.

[up] The criteria I was going for was "does this adequately describe the action?" I'll cop to the Batman example as I didn't know that "power sliding" was an actual term at the time, though.

This definitely shouldn't be disambiguated; even if the examples were ZCEs, there were still a lot of them, so there's something here. I'd be interested to here how expanding it would work, though.

Can you expand on what you mean by "even if the examples were ZC Es, there were still a lot of them, so there's something here."? Because I can recall a lot of tropes with lots of examples suggesting there was "something" there that were cut or disambiguated, so I'm a bit lost as to your meaning.

I mean there's a clear setup: a character has a bike, and for a Rule of Cool homage, they do something cool and slide into frame while breaking the bike.

I'm kinda tired so maybe I'm not saying/explaining it correctly, idk.

Yeah, it's not chairs by any means. It's just visual in a way that's hard to describe, but I don't know if something as simple as "slides into frame on their bike" is bad context. It passes the "could you replace it with any other trope name" rule of thumb. Do we need to specify that it looks cool?

If we don't move the trope, the proper context would be: "X stops their bike by slamming the foot into the ground and drifting for a bit without hurting themselves. The horizontal camera angle makes it a clear Akira Shout-Out."

It has the same problem as Personal Appearance Tropes and Stock Poses:

1. The trope is self-evident, technically the only required context is the fact that it visually happened.

2. Every example would sound identical since to count it needs a very specific pose, also being a Stock Shout-Outs.

I actually think maybe moving away from the necessity of the Shout-Out could help. Many of them are shout-outs but maybe it's more like AKIRA popularized/invented the trope and they aren't all deliberate shout-outs?

I'd like to expand to non-shoutout/non-deliberate cases, but I don't know any examples that aren't "the copypaste of Akira scene with different graphics", none bother to even use a different camera angle.

I kinda think that it's also a case of Stock Shout-Out and Stock Parody. I wonder if there should be rules for this kind of thing like this:

  • The angle should be similar to the shot of the movie
  • Vehicle front should be pointing to the left of the camera
  • The slide itself

Speaking of Trope Namer Syndrome, that is used in tropes like Indy Hat Roll, Indy Escape and Bond Gun Barrel because about everybody knows these kinds of Shout-Outs, parodies and homages to these works.

Would adding context to explain why they were speeding and then pulled off these sudden stops (say, transporting someone in a major hurry and then skidding to a stop to avoid crashing into something at their intended destination) help the trope?

Until next time...

I think explaining why they're speeding generally helps establish why it's a cool scene. I think the urgency that causes one to slam the brakes is part of the trope. We should probably think less specifically about the reference and more about why the reference caught on.

I have seen a multi animator Project parodying and also paying homage to this very scene (link). And it's very obvious when this scene it's parodied or paid homage due to the camera angle, the sliding stop itself, the vehicle or mount front pointing to the left with the rider and/or the mount looking in the direction of the camera. One example I could think of is in Pui Pui Molcar episode 8 when Teddy, one of the Molcars, was blown back by a laser shot from a flying shark robot and she needed to not stumble so she invokes this trope to prevent herself from getting injured. I know this is because of these rules for the trope. So [tup] to the name revert.

I don't disagree that the bike stop is a common shot, but again, what's the meaning? If it's to show that the character is adept with a motorcycle, that's Badass Biker. If the critique that not everyone who does this is a Badass Biker, it's still a "stock cool things bikers do" or something that doesn't need to be limited to the bike stop. If it's just "reference AKIRA", [points to Referenced By/ namespace]

I have said before that a lot of Stock Parody and Stock Shout-Out feel like they should be Referenced By/ instead (same with Fountain of Expies), but at least those are immediately recognizable. This lands in the gray area of "common thing that was popularized by AKIRA but isn't super recognizable by itself" so I'm hesitant to really call it a trope from that angle.

There's no Trope, it's Rule of Cool + Memetic Mutation because it's nice to reference influential works.

Can't these examples be moved to Referencedby.Akira if it's a reference to one work? I agree with Synchronicity that there's not really much of a meaning to this on its own (or at least not one that isn't redundant with tropes like Badass Biker, Shout-Out, and Referenced by...).

Edit: Thought I'd mention that Synchronicity's thoughts on Stock Parody and Stock Shout-Out subtropes frequently being redundant with Referenced by... and Shout-Out is something I've thought for a while.

Edit: Had to make multiple tweaks to this post because I'm not completely awake and need coffee.

You can't always get what you want.

Crown Description:

Sliding Bike Stop has a serious Zero Context Example problem, and there are concerns over both the name and the possibility that it isn't sufficiently distinct from ReferencedBy.Akira. What should be done with it?
