Kadokawa's minimum-budget narou adaptations tend not to inspire much effort from the staff. I'd wager that the bulk of the changes are on the manga's side, with the mangaka being concerned about having their name attached to something obviously shit

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale 1: Why have I not heard any hype for this?

It's a sudden adaptation of a shoujo light novel series that I think only recently got official translations, only the manga adaptation of its first arc is complete last I checkedwaii and has been completed for years. Being one of these things would have put it under the radar but being all of that means you have to be a shoujo fan really desperate for any new shoujo anime news to have heard of it.

Ack a bunch of pilots dropped while I was busy rewatching TTGL. Anyway here goes!

First Impressions

  • The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki - Northern War: I have little experience with the Trails franchise, as despite my interest I've always been daunted by its enormity. So I fully expect to miss lots of details following along with this show. However, even as a Trails greenhorn, I can see how grounded the writing and dialogue are. It's nice to see a military unit be an actual militay unit and not instantly abuse poor citizens. By the end of the episode we learn that there's an empire that's just claimed another country and now they have their eyes set on Ambria. I presume the heroes of the opposing factions somehow meet and team up. Or perhaps we will flip perspectives every now and then, to show both sides of the conflict? Either way, I'm interested in continuing.
  • Tsundere Akuyaku Reijou Liselotte to Jikkyou no Endou-kun to Kaisetsu no Kobayashi-san: What benevolent gods, to enlighten a man on the beauty of tsun de rais! Endou and Kobayashi basically run into an otome game turned SCP and run with it to get the never before seen Lieselotte ending. Not sure how long the gimmick of "divine" narrators will be amusing, but Lieselotte is indeed cute and she deserves to get a W, in honor of all the fallen villainesses out there. It helps that Endou and Kobayashi themselves are a fun duo living in their cute budding high school romance. Let's get a happy end for both the real and fantasy worlds. Continuing.
  • Buddy Daddies: We've had buddy shows and daddy shows, but I think this is the first time those two formulas have been mashed together, and know what? It's pretty fun! Our two dads have great chemistry both on- and off-field, their adopted daughter is adorable, and they hit a nice balance of action and humor that I'd expect more from a summer Hollywood B-flick than an anime. Continuing.
  • Sugar Apple Fairy Tale: The shojo-leaning anime this season have all been pretty good so far, huh? And this one is another tasty cookie on the plate. The pastel art definitely evokes a sugary fairy tale vibe, but the story itself deals with more serious themes like racism and slavery, even if the story doesn't quite go all in on them. I'm not sure why Challe didn't just deck the old man and nab his wing, by the way. Feel like a magically binding contract should have been involved somehow. But I'm willing to play along for now. Challe and Anne are acting out the typical pushy-bishie and innocent-girlie schtick right now, and I'm curious to see if they can develop that relationship into something truly worth savoring. Continuing.
  • Ars no Kyoujuu: The setting is familiar fantasy JRPG territory, but the story is executed competently enough to keep being engaging. Definitely like that the pilot wasn't bogged down with explanations, and is content to let viewers take in the world. Always a good sign for me when the animators go the extra mile to show local produce and wildlife. Seems like our main duo will be this jaded Paladin and a mysterious, probably lab-grown Cleric. Gonna guess this gonna go for more than one cour because otherwise there's too much stuff to cram into too little time. Also liked the fluidity of the small bits of action we got so far. Continuing.

So it seems the author of Sugar Apple Fairy Tail has released a new volume of the novel on December 2022 which started a new story arc, probably in conjuction to the anime airing. I also ended up spoiling myself on the ending for the novel's original run, lol.

Yeah my feelings of Sugar apple fairytale are mostly in line with the manga. Gorgeous art (animation as well in this case), very neat ideas but its tonal whiplash (where it actually has the sense to judge the protagonist for her hurtful actions and hypocrisy, but also seems unable to not frame every scene where the obvious male lead does as if it's just a perfectly normal snarky guy/plucky girl romance not to mention following serious moments immediately with odd feeling comedy) holds it back from being as good as it could be. Mind I'll still be following it.

A lot of people have been comparing Buddy daddies to Spy X Family but for some reason it reminds me more of the great pretender despite seemingly have zero staff overlap. So far I do enjoy it, Rei's "home" mode was pretty surprising and it has a fun enough blend of seriousness and absurdity. Very amused at the several no homo-ing of the premise though, I didn't think it would actually be BL but somehow it still made me laugh

Initial Reactions:
Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha S2: Our boi Anos is back to grace us with his presence! However, given my circumstance, I should probably try to rewatch the first EP because I think I didn't get what was going on... The introduction of new charas out of nowhere (if they were really new; I must've forgotten the first season) also didn't help...
Saikyou Onmyouji no Isekai Tenseiki: Interesting introduction! Isekai but fuck the magic system because I have my own way of doing things is our spice here... It's mild, but it gives enough flavor I guess!

Faithless Four: I get the distinct impression that they're the sort of people who don't "get" how they're coming across to other people.

"Swashbuckler, you're good, real good, at the fighting stuff. But Lords of War is a small local group that gets together for beer, pizza and some low-stakes adventuring. No one else in the party wants to be a lean, mean world-saving machine, and your attempts at 'fixing' people is harshing the buzz. Go out and find a team that needs a boss."

I would not be surprised if the next time his old party shows up, it's not the "haughty people who rejected me are humiliated by my super awesome new party and their epic skillz" but "hey, you got a new group and are doing well! Good on you, kid! Have fun saving the world!"

Nie R:Automata Ver 1.1a so far good. I only played till around this point as it was pretty hard without proper controller. But I like what I am seeing. Let's hope A1 can manage the same level of quality for announced 24 eps without serious delays (hello "86"). Some people already complaining about 3d though. There were a lot of the same idiots duing "CSM" airing.

Kaiko sareta Ankoku Heishi (30-dai) no Slow na Second Life is odd for now. On one hand I like the comedy and I'm always in for this type of the story. But o the other hand I am concerned that MC came out as OP by human stndards from the get go and got main heroines attention this easily. "Banished from Hero" party was better in both aspects. So I'll give it a couple more eps. for now.

Trigun Stampede: Fantastic animation, solid enough direction... not much in the way of subtlety. Following it for now

Nier: Quite pretty. Actually a more coherent story than the original despite skipping rather a lot of gameplay

Roukin 8: Oh, those author scenes are obnoxious. The rest isn't good, but those parts in particular are awful

[up][up][up] At least for the idol fan, I'm pretty sure that that's the case. From what we've seen the mentor didn't actually call him useless or anything.

How is Nier Automata? If I'm planning to play the game at some point, should I be holding off the anime?

First Impressions

  • The Slow Second Life of the Retired Dark Soldier in His 30s: Oh it's slow, alright. And I did not see anything worth sticking around for. Dropped.
  • The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten: False advertising. The angel isn't spoiling our male lead after all; she's actually teaching him to fix his diet and clean his room. That's admirable. I like how open the two leads are with each other, and by the end of the episode they're very comfortable hanging out. This is shaping up to be a decent love story. Continuing.
  • Trigun Stampede: With this pilot it's clear that this is going to be its own thing. It's skewing closer to the manga, and the little changes they've made to that are fine. Vash at the very least is still the bumbling dork we all love. The 3DCG is fantastic. Orange is the best in the biz and this could be their best work yet. Definitely continuing.
  • The Misfit of Demon King Academy: Too bad we didn't really get any of Anos' patented crazy stunts, but those are sure to come. I do like how his new enemy acknowledges he's too strong to fight head on and instead challenges him to a battle of wits. Continuing.
  • Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World: They keep saying the MC can't use magic when he's casting fireballs in plain sight. That's some severe denial there. Anything to make the MC look like an underdog, I guess. Think it would have also been more interesting if they emphasized the differences between the onmyo and isekai magic systems, but I guess that's me wanting this to be a different show from what it actually is. Dropped.
  • Saving 80,000 in Another World for my Retirement: Thought this would be more amusing than it really was. There's stuff I thought was cool, like Mitsuha having the ability to freely switch between worlds, so she can for example get powerful modern slingshots from her world and use it to take down wolves in the fantasy world. But then there's also stuff like the maneki neko being that straight up just appears to provide exposition and a convenient powerup. My feelings are mixed on it overall, but at least it's somewhat interesting? Watching until episode three.

Unlike Fillerdude I liked Saikyou Onmyoji (but I also like my isekai stories so mine is hardly an unbiased opinion). I was mostly just vibing with it till it hit me with the angela OP and then I was 100% turbo in.

Giant Beasts of Ars' first episode was mostly setup with a lot of jargon tossed around but it was still solid.

Misfit continues to be great and we're entering what I've heard is considered the best arc of the series. Just glad its finally being given the two cour treatment the series honestly deserves.

Trigun Stampede... man... like... I don't really have words for how impressed I was by this first episode. Just.. just go and watch it everyone. It has to be seen to be believed.

Saikyo Onyoji was better before it went into the isekai stuff. Unless there's a long timeskip, I can't into the shota exorcist magic school bit.

Went back and watched the PV. Its a little hard to tell but he does look older in some bits of it so probably yeah. Unless you're looking for him to literally be 30 in which case? No.

I’d say play the game first if you plan to. You really need to play it to get the full shock and experience.

Initial Reactions:
Nokemono-tachi no Yoru: Not for the faint of heart... It was mainly intros, but the delivery makes me want to tear up for Wisteria. The poor hun... May she and Marbas find a place to belong! Also, good luck to Snow in trying to find her (very likely, if not is, his sister from whom he was separated), but something tells me that part is going to be tragic...
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko S2: Perfect to watch after the above! It's nice to see Ryouma again, and it is certainly nice to see something a little more calming after something heartwrenching...
Handyman Saitou in Another World: It was great! It has action, adventure, comedy, a bit of romance (fine by me in this case), some teary moments and lots of heartwarming moments! One interesting thing I noticed is that it's told in mini-stories bundled up, an interesting choice of presentation! Looking forward to more of this!
Kyokou Suiri S2: As usual for the series! We're mainly hit with one case that our duo Kotoko and Kurou have to solve, something supernatural comes up, and a fight ensues to defeat said supernatural. For this episode though, they also decided to sneak in an As You Know...

Uh, that's not really answerable until it's finished

From what I saw flipping through the manga, it doesn't focus on the magic school stuff much

Benriya Saitou-san Isekai ni Iku is... interesting. Also a rarity, as far as my isekai experiences go, for series to show mundane skills being useful before (the guy is a handyman, after all) and after (still does lockpicking and stuff) the transition.

Also, where can I find a fairy like that? she's so cute!

Alright, thanks for the replies. Skipping the Nier anime for now then.

First Impressions

  • Nokemono-tachni no Yoru: I'm sorry but I can't get over how terrible Marbas' design is. He looks like a dude in a furry costume, and I can't take him seriously. I'm also not sure where the plot will go aside from Wisteria and Marbas going on their road trip of sorts, which I feel could get boring quick. Overall this felt like a lesser Mahoutsukai no Yome, and even that had a difficult time holding my attention. Giving it two more episodes.
  • Handyman Saitou in Another World: It's up front about being a bunch of individual chapters pasted together, and while I think those could have been rearranged to achieve a better flow, it was otherwise alright. The show has an almost slice of life appeal, with our MC Saitou rediscovering the warmth of being cherished after being treated like a wage slave in his previous world. His party members are already memorable too, I love the forgetful old coot. I also quite like that Saitou doesn't get any special abilities, he only has his expertise and tools. This isn't a power fantasy, it's an emotional fulfillment fluff piece. Definitely continuing.
  • Mou Ippon!: Oh yeah, they got those martial arts movements on the tatami mat down pat. Just that already earns this anime a lot of goodwill, but I also like how the main character is someone who wanted to quit judo because she hasn't accomplished anything significant at the sport. Would be interesting to see that side of competitive sports explored more. Continuing.

Nachtwandler Since: Dec, 2014
#121: Jan 8th 2023 at 2:10:46 PM

Mou Ippon! was good. I have a soft spot for sports anime with predominantely female cast and this one hits a bit close as I also did martial arts in middle and high school. Hope, it will have enough sports and won't delve full So L (I hope for at least "Bamboo Blade" level of balance here).

So, there are still a few titles I may check but hesitating for now. The only definite pick is "D 4 DJ S2" as I want my dose of Rondo.

What I’ve seen so far in no real order

Iceblade Sorceror: i heard some hype around this on twitter (I know, I know) so I thought I’d give it a shot even if i don’t like most isekai that much. That was a mistake. They had to have followed a how-to on making your first isekai series cause they hit every trope with a machine-like precision. I especially thought it was funny after the first class where most of the rest of the episode was dedicated to just introducing each heroine with zero attempt at making these scenes flow together. Definitely not continuing

Buddy Daddies: i liked this one a lot, pretty much from day one of this anime being announced I though the spy x family comparisons were annoying so I’m glad that this first episode isn’t that similar afterall. The dads have a good dynamic and it (hopefully) won’t go BL direction cause I think just two assassin friends raising a kid is a more interesting premise than making it a romance.

Nier Automata: not much to say, pretty much just 1:1 adapted the game’s intro. Most interesting thing is that they seem to be adapting A and B routes simultaneously (which makes sense since 2B and 9S are together for a significant portion of their routes anyways)

Trigun Stampede: it’ll be hard to separate this from the original. I think visually it’s really good but I’m not sure about revealing Knives and the seed ships right away, will have to see how it plays out. Milly being absent is the only thing I cannot forgive and Roberto is a pisspoor replacement so far. I have a small theory that Milly may be reimagined as a villain but it’s unlikely

Revenger: pretty stock anime original first episode I think. Protagonist joins of up with a group consisting of a wisecracker, gruff old guy, token loli, and bishonen leader guy, they do killing together. there’s probably a man-behind-the-man type villain waiting to reveal themselves but I feel like most of its run will be episodic adventures.

Trails of Cold Steel: Northern War: the other video game based series I’ll be watching this season after Nier. This one is a very different approach though since it’s depicting events that we only ever heard about and never saw directly in Cold Steel. First episode was primarily exposition, I assume as a refresher for the game’s fans because you’d have to be insane for this to be your first dip into the Trails franchise

[up] I do know Iceblade isn’t an isekai i didn’t mean to say it was, i only brought the genre up because it has a bunch of isekai cliches and nowadays iceblade’s genre in general shares a lot of tropes with isekai

[up][up][up] Loli? Isn't that a shota in "Revenger" (despite being voiced by female seiyuu and their look)?

D 4 DJ All Mix was good. Almost missed it as TV airing starts on 13th but streaming platforms including Crunchyroll got it earlier. The episode itself is obviously introductory. This time the plot will revolve aropund "Lyrical Lily" unit running the promotional event for the town. They are my least favorite unit so I hope other girls will have enough focus. I liked the new OP more than the previous one. And a new "Peaky P-key" song was surprising (flamenco+dubstep, seriously?). Let's see what we get this time. I just hope for more cool performances as always, the plot is not that significant.

Though, I will need some time to get used to the two girls being recasted (Rei's seiyuu left this franchise, though, not Bang Dream, thankfully; while Ibuki's seiyuu is on hiatus so she got recasted in both).
