[up][up] I'm sorry but what do you mean that guys have more visceral reactions to it?

Because while I'm sure that false rape accusations do happen (and people close to me have personally witnessed it happening) in this society where women have to fight tooth and nail to simply be listened to not to talk of given some justice when guys have no self control and that being more of a majority, seeing people go "Ugh, this is the worst thing anyone can ever do to you, just ruin your life like that just cause bitches be crazy" just ends up triggering the fuck out of me.

Mind I'm not going to pretend I'm some paragon of virtue who doesn't consume problematic shit on the reg, but my niche dubcon at best drama C Ds sustained by fan translations isn't going to enter general consciousness in the way that an anime adaptation that's being officially licensed will.

I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boys

Why do we have all of these divided into seasonal forums? Wouldn't it make more sense for these to just be one big forum for anime?

But anyways. Anyone see the trailer for 'Go go loser ranger?'

It's much, much easier to organize when we have one thread per season. Since anime releases are staggered into quarterlies, so are the threads.

It's been fun.

Plus its very helpful for people catching up so any discussion doesn't get lost in the new season.

The previous season thread tends to have a little discussion a month or so into the next season.

Initial Reactions:
Bungou Stray Dogs S4: Starting off with adapting a light novel, I think... The one involving a young Fukuzawa meeting Ranpo. I only read the manga, so I guess I'll have to wait a bit before that gets adapted, but so far, all is as expected of BSD!! Can't wait to see more!!
Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei: Finally caught the broadcast (not on Japanese TV, which would come in about 15 minutes as of the time of posting), and I came to like Anis. Her first appearance, her grand entrance that interrupted drama going on, and especially her getting Euphyllia just as she was about to break down. Though mainly intro, it was interesting (and fruity) enough to get me interested!

  • The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady: On the one hand, it's a pretty good intro that introduces all the important players for this arc. On the other, not starting at the disengagement and Anis' subsequent dynamic entry is a bit of a shame, it's a great way to actually introduce her. Unless some actually major deviations happen, there's a ton to look forward to with this; Anis is crazy for magic, Euphie and Ilia have to deal with her shit, and it never stops being fun and/or hilarious, I'll be expecting this to be one of my favourites this season. Also, even with context of future plot, the prince goes way too damn hard on being an utterly hateful prick.

First Impressions

  • The Ice Guy And His Cool Female Colleague: I can't quite put my finger on the art style but it's reminding me of some past shoujo anime. Fuyutsuki in particular, being a cool-headed brunette, reminded me of Shizuku from Tonari no Kaibutsu. The character designs are gorgeous! BUT. This office romance is kinda really boring. The biggest culprit is the lack of cohesion in the flow of events. It's as if they animated each manga chapter individually and stuck the end products together til it hit 20 minutes. This might have worked better as a half-length show. The lack of proper scene progression also diminishes the impact of the love story, because the buildup of the chemistry just isn't there. The bland direction and dialogue only compound the issue. Dropped.
  • Technoroid: Overmind: Water levels and daytime temperatures have risen because of global warming, and pushed humans to relying on androids for various daily tasks. But there's a group of four androids who mysteriously don't have a master. They've been fine doing their own thing but alas, they've neglected to pay the electricity bill so they're in danger of running out of battery. So they're now joining an idol competition for the money. Yes, that is how the story starts. Unfortunately they have no idea how to put on a good show and bomb their first attempt. On the way home they stumble into a kid and help him rekindle the childhood memories of his dead foster father, which somehow inspires them into pulling off a slick J-pop boyband performance. WHAT. Uhh, sure! Credits roll... But wait there's more! They see a robot push a drunkard into a vat of magma. What is this? What is this madness? Definitely continuing.

This is what I'd expect from the scriptwriter coming hot off the heels of anime where the idol rival was legally sold for adoption in exchange for paying the main character's hospital bills.

Definitely keeping up with Reincarnated Princess this season. I recall the manga being very charming, and the anime's doing a solid job so far too.

Tomo-chan is a Girl: Well, the seams between each 4-Koma are blindingly obvious.

I am giving it another few eps, as it's a fine light comedy, but I have such a huge 'check it out' list that I don't know if I will keep up with it.

Initial Reactions:
Revenger: An interesting premise, and an interesting first episode, but something tells me I'll be lost along the way...
Spy Kyoushitsu: I don't know why, but it feels like Assassination Classroom but all the students are female and Klaus is closer to Twilight (note: never seen Assassination Classroom).
Oniichan wa Oshimai: Ok, I can definitely see the fanservice material here... That aside, at least it fulfills the expectation of cuteness!
Hyouken no Majutsushi ga Sekai wo Suberu: Another standard introduction, one that is as expected of a magical school anime: magic system explanations, introduction of charas, and the basic plots shown. Not that much to expect though...

Onimai: I just don't find it funny. Also weirdly fanservicey for something with that art style

Revenger:Well enough made, but very predictable. There were enough odd moments that suggest something greater (and weirder) is at play for me to give it another episode, but it'll definitely need to shift gears for me to stay with it

Spy Room: Decent? A bit heavy on somewhat clunky dialogue, but I like the premise and the aesthetic. Will be continuing for the time being

Got to watch some new anime with my friends so here's some...

First Impressions

  • Tomo-chan is a Girl!: Tomboy wants to date her childhood friend but her friend keeps treating her like a guy friend. It was a hit with my friend circle but I only found it serviceable. Tomo is decent enough if a bit archetypical, but her two childhood friends are kind of annoying. It has the same issue as The Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague in that you can see the seams between the adapted chapters. Not continuing..
  • Spy Kyoushitsu: You are going to get tired of hearing about how "Impossible Missions have a mortality rate of over 90%, even for first class spies." It gets repeated at least three times. The first 18 minutes drags because of writing like that, as well as a focus on the girls engaging in leisure activities rather than any sort of espionage training, and I was ready to write this off as a shallowly spy-themed CGDCT. Thankfully the last 8 minutes has the main girl poison the mentor character, locking them in a battle of wits on a sinking boat. And the setup becomes clear: I was joking about it in my season preview, but this really is gonna be like Assassination Classroom. It's probably safe to surmise that the rest of the girls have their own unique abilities, and they'll hone them in order to beat their genius teacher. Gets two more episodes.
  • Revenger: Well that last anime did still leave us with a hankering for proper covert activities, and what do you know, this one scratched that itch. It's a familiar setup: a team of assassins that are doing the dirty work (seemingly under the orders of a Christian organization) necessary to preserve the peace in Nagasaki. The pacing of this pilot was lockstep, a whirlwind of events that drove a certain samurai's spirits into the ground. The writing also feels confident in itself, like when their mission starts two more people show up and the show doesn't bother introducing them, because it doesn't have to, you're here to see them murder people, you can get to know them later. Speaking of murder, the bloody spectacle especially of the more creative kills was great. The Urobutcher is doing good work. Continuing
  • Oniichan wa Oshimai: Was really impressed with the animation work, and then I found out it's being done by Studio Bind. No wonder. I'm not sure how I feel about the story, though. It's not really funny and the feels didn't hit. The fanservice also really bothered me. I guess it does have the potential to tug on the heartstrings. Maybe. Tentatively continuing.
  • DanMachi S4 Part 2: Part One left our heroes in deep shit and the beginning of Part 2 somehow makes things even worse. But it's in the darkest hour that the lights should strive to shine their brightest. This arc has reached heights I did not think DanMachi could even reach, and it seems that JC Staff is in agreement. They've taken notes from ufotable and MAPPA while animating the fight against Amphisbaena. The CG for the two-headed leviathan is great, and the dynamic camera added to the frenetic desperation of a JRPG party trying to survive a boss without their hero. And this is technically just the side story to the true ordeal. Incredibly excited for what's in store. Definitely continuing.

  • Spy Classroom: I mean, I guess I'll watch it for now, but I'm liable to drop it if too many other shows catch my interest. There wasn't a whole lot to say about this episode, really. The girls are all apparently failures, yet the only real benchmark we have of their skill is Lilly versus the hyper-competent teacher, we only know, like, three of said girls purely because of some quirk they have, and I think impossible missions are supposed to be really difficult? I dunno, I wish they elaborated on that last one more, I don't think I quite understood what they were going for there.

  • Onimai: Well the OP/ED sure play up the fanservice angle, but I do not remember the manga being that bad about it. I guess the first volume had the most 'fanservice', but once Mashiro's friend group is established, that pretty much disappears for silly So L stuff, Mashiro slowly bettering themselve... and the occasional meh joke. Anyways, I liked the episode well enough, I'll just be hoping the anime doesn't ramp up the fanservice in the future, the manga does way better when it's not doing that.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tail: Shall definitely looks badass! This is gonna be one looooong tale...
Buddy Daddies: The first episode was nice! I think Miri just gave me cavities with that smile and innocence, and Rei shot me in the heart. Meanwhile, I'm liking Toyonaga's voicing for Kazuki, especially with that voice crack around the start of the anime!

  • Revenger: The first episode was a bit dry outside the actions scenes (which were incredible), but I think it has potential, so I'll keep at it.
  • Cold Steel: Northern War: I can't recommend this to anyone who isn't all in on the Trails Series. Not only is the animation pretty bad, it doesn't really explain the setting to those who haven't played the games. But the writing was pretty good and I've ventured too deep down the Trails rabbit hole to not watch this to the end.

  • Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! - couldn't really stomach even the first episode, even if the premise does sound interesting and Tomo is a good girl. Might try watching it again some time later, but at this point I'm sadly putting it off my watch-as-new-episodes-are-released list.
  • Isekai Nonbiri Nouka - could've been a bit better, edging a bit into edutainment, if they at least showed more on how various construction techniques work (complex no-nails-were-used architecture like Kizhi is fascinating!) but alas... Might still be a decent watch if you want something tranquil, god knows, we have enough 'action' - and not in a good sense - going on in the real world.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki – Northern War - wasn't this supposed to air on Sundays? Anyway, as someone who has no ideas what's going on, the first episode didn't provide much context. Will give it another episode, but I'm not having very high hopes for it.

Buddy Daddies: Not my type of humour. Action is kinda limp, too

Ars no Kyojuu: One of those anime-original adventure series we get one or two of every year. Has it's own world, an oldschool sense of humour, and an older lead. I find it interesting enough to continue on with, but the fact that they thought that that cat girl was a good idea concerns me

Iceblade Sorcerer feels like an object lesson in the transformative power of adaptation. I'm convinced that the anime only exists to make the manga (a formulaic but charming magic school adventure with excellent face game) look infinitely better in every regard, and I have no idea which version is truer to the original light novels, but it's clear that one of the other is a massive deviation from the source material.

Seriously, watch the first episode of the anime and read the first couple of chapters of the manga. It's honestly amazing how they took the same basic story in two completely opposite directions.

Ars no Kyojuu was decent. For some reason it reminded me of both seasons of Shingeki no Bahamut with a bit of Granblue Fantasy mixed. Like Cygames are not in the production comitee (but a few other mobage developers are, which is funny). Hard to say where it goes, but first episode at least got me interested.

Buddy Daddies was good. A decent action comedy, exactly what I wanted. I just hope people with "BL googles" won't try to aim every of this series discussions to "why it is gay" or "damn, it is not gay enough".

Reincarnated Princess 1: Looks to be a highlight of the season. Anis knows how to get what she wants, and I respect that. Surprisingly good fight scene from her. Ironically despite this being a yuri show I'm almost equally interested in the douchebag prince since with a slightly different framing he could be considered a good guy for following his heart instead of the wishes of the monarch controlling his life.

Revenger 1: Only watched this because Butcher is involved. It's okay. Decently bloody. Nothing else to say really. Not sure if this will be worth following unless I hear something good about later episodes.

Spy Classroom 1: Went in expecting Princess Principal at home. Got Release the Spyce at home instead. Watchable, but really mid. Would've helped if any of the other spies in training got any distinguishing character traits. Another one I might forget about without good word of mouth.

Commentary Villainess 1: What a weird premise. The whole back and forth between the real and game worlds left both of them kind of underbaked. Moreso the game world, which is just otome villainess cliches at the moment. The real world stuff actually looks like a perfectly functional romance. Hopefully they switch which characters hear the commentary. Might be good if they do that.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale 1: Why have I not heard any hype for this? It's an adaptation and also really good. And by good I mean what a spicy romance between mistress and her slave fairy. I respect that the show is willing to have Anne participate in the fairy slave trade even though she hates it. Shows how she doesn't completely recognize the privilege she has, but is still willing to acknowledge herself on some level as a terrible person. Morally she should've freed him the moment they got out of the city instead of promising him she'll do it after he escorts her, but I like that she's going to have to stew in her hypocrisy for at least one more episode. Also really good backgrounds.

[up][up]They just seem to have made all the dumbest, blandest decisions when adapting the source material (although I don't know whether the source material was itself dumb and bland, and the manga put in a gigantic amount of legwork to elevate it). Pacing, event ordering, characterisation, and damned near everything else are all severely downgraded in a way that's obvious from just one episode and a few manga chapters. Plus, it just looks ugly, with cheap-looking CG, garishly-coloured (and often poorly-drawn) characters, and rubbish image composition (as in, they make no effort to make the characters, the backgrounds, and everything else feel like part of a unified whole).

It really is stunningly inept.

What's precedent ever done for us?
