Did you know that Halloween is an example of what anthropologists call an "inversion holiday", when social norms and expectations are allowed to be ritually broken or reversed? Mardi Gras and (to a lesser extent) April Fool's Day are also on the very short list of such holidays which are widely recognised in the modern world.
