We gonna change the administrative on C Ms when it comes to more "controversial" works?
- What about fanworks, in particular creepypastas and darkfics, that seek to portray canonical characters as monsters?:
- We are exceedingly skeptical towards these. Partly it's because they are non-canon, and partly it's because contributors to this thread don't feel like subjecting themselves to those sorts of works in order to evaluate a candidate. We have established a few baseline rules for fics:
- No "schlock-shlock." If a fan work has a character committing gross and disgusting atrocities for no other reason than to have gratuitous gross and disgusting atrocities? It's right out. Nobody wants to have to deal with these.
- No demonization of canon characters without a viable reason as to why they would turn evil.
- The fan work must be at least somewhat conducive with the original of the setting. If it pushes the standard of the setting too far to a point where it's ridiculous, we won't allow. It's a burden of proof for the OP to demonstrate the legitimacy of the fanfic and the example. We do, however, allow exceptions for alternate universes that completely overhaul the setting (e.g. There Will Be Brawl) and present a new standard to be weighed by; furthermore, if the fanfic features a crossover between two works, we generally judge candidates by the work with the higher heinous standard.
- I just saw this Torture Porn work that was so sick! The villain here is an easy keeper!:
- OK, there's a few things you need to consider: Does the film have a substantive plot? By this, we mean a plot that's more than "depraved person tortures people For the Evulz." Also, ask yourself if the work is in good taste. If it involves copious amounts of Gratuitous Rape, indulgent Gorn, or other exploitative material, the answer is "probably not" and please try not to propose from such works. We do our best to be fair and objective, but as mentioned above, if the work primarily exists for shock value, it generally lacks the complexity required to count, and we usually don't want to gush about such works on this wiki anyway.
It's still disliking the work at the end of the day. It's not judging the settings on its own fictional merits. It doesn't determine how bad the characters are from each other in any way, and thus, isn't useful criteria. Just abstain and move on.
And ah, my bad on the fanwork rule. Sorry about that. Yeah, axing it is definitely good with me. It was too special ruled anyway.
Yes. Cause none of it applies anymore from my understanding. If a consensus already came up, anyway.

Shadow?Oh my god, thank you, you just summed up what I was trying to say for a page and a half in one post.
Yeah, like within the scope of the threads there isn't really a difference between that Winnie the Pooh horror movie that's coming out and a fanfic where Winnie the Pooh is a serial killer.

And there's nothing wrong with you deciding to do that (hell I'll probably avoid the discussion as well)

So to sum up
The threads will allow candidates from any work that would be allowed to have a page on the site, regardless of it's quality or if the work is pushing a nasty agenda (assuming the characters meet the requirements of the tropes).
Also, this may be a bit Captain Obvious of me, but we aren't obligated to propose characters from these kinds of work. Like I'm not going to propose the 50 shades of red guy because I honestly don't want anything to do with that story.
Damn, I guess that's what my first CM EP will be when the threads restart lol.

Honestly I feel like I have kind of had that mindset for a while. Now I don't go actively searching for characters to count but I sometimes feel obligated to propose every single character I find that count. But yeah just because you have a character who technically counts doesn't mean you need to propose them, just as you don't need to upvote them.
Yes, absolutely. This thread had a rocky start, but I'm glad this has turned into a much more coherent and respectful debate. :)
And yes, I was part of the discussion about fanfic examples that happened 2-3 years ago, and I was one of the ones arguing that fanfics shouldn't be held to different standards since they are their own works at the end of the day.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallImo I kind of use the threads as an excuse to look at works that I otherwise may not have watched/read, plus it helps with my tendency to not finish watching stuff if I tie watching stuff to a project like these threads.
Though funnily enough a lot of the characters I've put up have been from stuff I was watching casually.

Most the time, I'll recall someone who might count, then use the thread and rewatch to verify.
Anyway, I promise, last time I'll bring these up, but with the conversation dying down and little responses, do these ideas sound helpful?
- Trigger Warning on particularly dark / demonizing works. This should facilitate the removal of content requirements that make us consistent with the rest if the wiki, while making it far easier for people to refuse themselves of these discussions (won't even have to abstain, just see the warning and nope out).
- Creating an Administrivia page for MB, linking relevant Administrivia pages in stickies for relevant threads. This will make the rules easier to read (especially for non-registered users), make the specifics easier to ammend should OP go inactive, and remove clutter from the stickies. I would be willing to work on this particular point.

I like the idea of trigger warnings, that way people will get an idea of how the work might be. You can also apply this for stuff like high-blood pressure issues(cough, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, cough) or other such gross stuff.
I'm good with a Administrivia page for MB, yes.

Shadow?I'm down for content warnings, hell encouraging that kind of thing elsewhere may help people who are interested in the thread, but get triggered by things like rape, so they can avoid stuff that would trigger them.
I'm down with MB getting an andministravia page, I think the current OP is a bit long for an OP.
if someone resists putting a content warning after being asked to by multiple people, i would think that falls under being a dick, though.
not sure if im fully committing to coming back tonight, but i did want to nudge to make sure: it was decided that people wouldn't be allowed to beg for votes on their candidates, right? if not, i want to bring that back up, because i think such a change is doubly necessary if the loosening of restrictions is implemented, just so that people who propose triggering candidates can't pester for engagement from people who have noped out.

We used to have a 'too far off from the original' sort of rule before we diced it after a lengthy talk. I am pretty sure Jay was part of it
