i think that'll be problematic if, say, a new user who wants the work happens to join in that conversation and gets shouted down because "it should go to someone who knows what they're doing" or what have you. it would encourage the clique-ish behavior we're trying to get rid of.

Maybe we could than just do rock, paper and scissors for it. Yeah I know Chloe was joking
But the decision is random and would than mean we don't have drawn out fights (and this doesn't mean the people competing can't collab on the work too).
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I see no issue with just "first come, first served" for midnight releasing...we still have a limit of 5 reservations so there's plenty works to go around, I'm not a fan of "mad rush to discuss it on the day it releases" or "random selection through a game." Collaboration is still encouraged through this.

No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!At that point it’s just the same reservation system we already have but far more combative and out of people’s hands, which will only lead to more negative feelings. If people want to collab that’s always an option, but I don’t see why it can’t just be done a certain amount of time before the release date instead of everyone fighting for it on the day

if there was a random selection process you'd want it to be something that's publicly verifiable so people can't lie about the results (not that i think anyone participating in this discussion would do that, but it's still something that should be protected against since we're trying to encourage new blood).
Agreed, we're able to talk things out and collab if more than one or two people chime in the day 2 weeks or a month (whichever we decide) before release of a work...the idea of "rush to discuss it on the day it releases" or "idk play a game for it" is needlessly competitive and, yes, clique-ish.
My only addendum is I still maintain that we should have "ongoing" extras to accommodate for TV shows or comics, wherein if you grabbed, say, a TV show for the first season within 2 weeks/a month of its release, you can keep your name penned in without affecting your 5 reservations during the off-seasons.

No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!If anything, this could probably be covered by having a waiting period for write-ups much like Broken Base and other tropes already have. This would prevent a deluge of suggestions for the same work popping up the same day it releases and most of the possible in-fighting. 1 week and 1 month could be tried.

I heavily disagree with having any kind of loopholes that enable people to have more than 5 reservations going on at the same time. If you feel strongly about a new series and really want to cover it, you can leave one work behind. There's not a lack of people that would pick up after you.

tbh, the first thing that crossed my mind (which i didn't say at the time because it felt needlessly combative) was that people are responsible for their own behavior and if someone throws a bitchfit because someone else beat them to the punch by a few seconds, that person doesn't have the temperament to productively contribute to the thread anyway. we're trying to fix things, but you can't fix people. there's always going to be problematic people, and they can be dealt with according to the rules.
Every time I’ve been beaten to a work, I just… ask if it can be split. That has never led to anything other than a collaboration, especially because since people are often regulars on both threads, there’s often an agreement of “I’ll take it on one thread and you take it on the other”

That's...not a terrible idea actually (Mir, I assume by date you mean the reservation date and not the release date?).
Though question: Will this 1 month/2 week/whatever rule apply to current reservations? E.G. will I need to remove Blade, Deadpool 3, and Expendables 4 from my reservations, even though all have set dates?
