Honestly I really dug Dead Space 3's not-quite-interconnected level designs.
The combat wasn't even that different from the previous games. Not quite as technical due to the lack of dedicated weapons, but honestly you still got a lot of mileage out of the customizable gun.
DS 3 gets too bad a rap IMO.

EA has never known how to handle non-sports games.

I don't know if it was Visceral or EA, but whoever decided to dump 120 million dollars into Dead Space 2, a game in a rather niche genre. And then it is entirely EA's fault for giving 120 million dollars to Visceral again for Dead Space 3, after Dead Space 2 wasn't considered a success despite shipping millions. Dead Space 2 was great, and I'll die on the hill of 3 being a really fun game from a gameplay standpoint, but if they stuck to the first game's relatively small scope with a smaller budget, Dead Space might've turned a profit after the first game.
