First Impressions

  • Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!: What excites me the most about this pilot is that it’s not a straightforward adaptation of the source material. The team behind the anime have a good grasp of what the original story wants to convey, and that’s what anime adaptations should strive for, honestly. Just need to see if they can nail the comedy, but I’m reasonably confident they can based on this first showing. Definitely continuing.
  • Human Crazy University: Kind of a waste of a fascinating premise. Basically a death row inmate survives his execution, and upon further study he’a labeled Undead Man for surviving a lot of stuff that should have killed him. But it’s all talking heads, with very limited animation, and the conversations themselves are not profound, philosophical or even darkly humorous. Again, a waste. Trying until episode three.
  • Mob Psycho 100 S3: Has everything that makes Mob Psycho so good. Mob having typical teenage troubles despite his incredible psychic powers, and Reigen continuing to be an awesome mentor that helps Mob find his way. This opener already got me back into the groove, and I’m already in the mood for more. Definitely continuing.

Shinobi no Ittoki: Why is this so dull? 'Dude gets caught up in a ninja war' is a fairly solid premise, but we spend half the premiere with an utterly dull school boy doing school boy things, and the other half with him getting tossed around by people actually involved in the plot. There's been maybe a minute of action? The actual plot should start next episode, but I'm not sure if I want to watch it :/

Eminence in Shadow: Starting off your isekai comedy with an entirely straight-faced story set in our world is definitely a choice. It was kinda underwhelming, but maybe it'll pick up once the actual story starts?

DIY: Decent enough slice-of-life series. Pretty chill, but with enough of a weird edge to stave off boredom. And I like the art style

Meanwhile, TenKen's production values are now about on par with Kumo, and it continues to move about 30% slower than it should

First Impressions

  • DIY: I thought this was supposed to be relaxing, but then we have an accident-prone MC joining a craftsmanship club full of saws, drills and nails! And there is a pig that lives in perpetual fear of becoming dinner! Kidding aside, I am already loving the attention to detail, which has me hopeful that this anime will satisfy me with its dive into the nuts and bolts (heh) of DIY furniture. Also interesting that they show more high-tech stuff, and it would be really cool if the girls play around with 3D printers and the like. I am already itching to build myself an end table. Continuing.
  • Futoku no Guild: I was expecting braindead ecchi so it’s nice that there’s other types of humor in here. Still not particularly funny and a lot of the JRPG jokes have been done before, but still watchable. Trying until next episode.
  • Muv Luv Alternative: Like last time, lots of unnecessary exposition. Please just let me see giant robots fighting against giant aliens. Continuing.

[up]Agreed. I expected a plain (if weirdly well-animated) CGDCT, and instead I got a (weirdly well-animated) CGDCT set in a higher-tech near-future that seems like it might touch on right-to-repair as a major theme. Fascinating!

Also, Rei, you're going to need that club funding for Serufu's hospital bills.

[up]It gets worse. Her friend's name appears to be Suride Miku, which isn't a pun... but Suride Purin is. (Suriidee Purintaa = 3D Printer).

It's been fun.

First Impressions

  • Bibliophile Princess: Huh, we timeskip through the bulk of the MC and prince’s engagement, so we don’t really see the lead couple get fleshed out beyond their superficial traits. Elliana is cute but in a generic quiet bookworm sort of way, and I’m not a fan of her dry monologuing. The second half seems to suggest that that the show is more of a romance/drama, because I’m pretty sure that Iris lady has been sabotaging Elliana in a bid to become the prince’s betrothed. I think I need to see more, but for now I’m lukewarm on this one. Trying until episode 3.
  • Akiba Maid War: The war is not metaphorical. The maids are literally gunning each other down. The maid cafes function as gangs, except with added cringe and campy violence. Lots of campy violence. Kinda interesting pilot, but let’s see if it remains interesting with the gimmick out of the way. Trying until episode three.

OK. So, my picks for this season (not much, I may pick a couple more series but not sure yet).

Spy x Family Part 2 is great. Terrirosts arc and Bonds additoion really stirred the plot a bit and for now they are doing this arc justice. We'll probably se Tennis turney arc this season also. To bad its a long way till the Cruise arc.

Do It Yourself!! is a bit surprising. I though it would be just your regular CGDCT but with DIY theme, but they also added a bit of futuristic setting. Let's see how it goes.

Akiba Maid Sensou is... interesting. Some guys predicted it will turn this way and I do not mind. A lot of Tarantino vibes from it. Let's see if they can manage this level of craziness further.

Akiba Maid War: Oh, it's doing a Zombie Land Saga. Where ZLS used it's premise to highlight the artificial nature of an idol's persona, AMW is using gang wars to hyper-emphasize the territorial disputes between maid cafes. Anyway, while the idol dance shoot-out is one of the greatest things I've ever seen, I don't like cringe, and that's what the entire rest of the episode was

Legend of Mana: Oh my god this is obnoxious. Like 80% of the cast is small, annoying creatures. Otherwise, good design work but not a terribly compelling story. ...The hero's archetype is not one I'm used to seeing applied to guys, but I'm not sure what I feel about that

Oh, they adapted Legend of Mana into an anime? Square has been adapting its older games lately (Dragon Quest V came to mind).

Continue writing our story of peace.

  • The Eminence in Shadow: Well that was an intro. It certainly indicates that the anime's going to have some effort put into it, which is a good sign. I tried reading the web novel a few years ago, and was put off. I'm not sure if it was just a really bland translation job, but an issue I had with it, was the MC feeling super callous and unhinged, and... not really conveying the humour that the premise would indicate should be there. So here's hoping it's better conveyed here.

  • Akiba Maid War: I honestly had no idea what to make of this. Then the gundance thing happened, and now I want to see a lot more of that. Before said scene, it kind of felt like the show was trying to be... weirdly serious, I guess? Like it genuinely wasn't aware of how silly the whole maid war thing was. I'll see how the next few episodes go.

So Eminence in Shadow apparently had the start completely changed and made more generic.

The first episode of Akiba Maid War isn't that hard to make sense of if you have watched some yakuza movies. Though as an original series, there's no telling what it will do next.

Re: Eminence in Shadow Can’t speak for the web novel, but I found that the Comedic Sociopathy works in the manga.

[up][up][up] & [up][up] Yeah they changed the start by adapting an extra from the fourth novel. Basically they’re committing to the bit— I expect the real tone of the series to show up in the next episode.

Initial Reactions:
Bocchi the Rock!: Poor Hitori... It really is hard to make the most of life when you're shy. The OP and ED are rock bangers, and the humor is certainly relatable! Can't wait ot see how this goes!
Blue Lock: Poor Kira... In this appeal to realism, it's survival of the fittest... It's an already-alienating premise now that I think about it clearly, and yet, I would want to see how this Lord of the Flies situation will progress... Onto the characters, aside from the main chara Yoichi, Bachira easily made an impression on me.

First Impressions

  • Legend of Mana: Seems like it’s adapting a specific quest line, which is probably a good idea. The visuals are the best part— they keep the extravagant hairstyles and costume designs, and all in all it captures the colorful 90s Square JRPG look it’s going for. They even keep the way locations pop up on the map from the game! Not sure how well this will jive with the people who haven’t played the game, but as for me, continuing.
  • Bocchi The Rock!: This first episode does one thing incredibly well, and that’s to endear us to its delightfully socially awkward main heroine, Hitori. She fumbles with her words a lot. She tries to dress like a rocker chick to stand out and get people to talk to her, but no one ever does, so she slowly stashes away her baubles in defeat. She finds comfort in dark, cramped spaces. Her voicework is phenomenal too, particularly how shrill her inner monologues get. There wasn’t a lot of music, but the short samples we did get were great riffs. And I like how visual the comedy is. Definitely continuing.
  • Blue Lock: My main concern going in was if the animation was going to deliver the hype of the manga, and so far, it’s looking good. So I’m pretty hyped for this adaptation. I love Blue Lock for being a unique take on football stories, and being antithetical to typical sports manga in general. It’s a dog-eat-dog edgefest, and it’s only going to get crazier from here. Definitely continuing.

Bocchi the Rock: It's very well made, funny... and just about as cringy as I can stand. I'll give it another episode, I guess

Blue Lock: Fun when it's about crazy people being awful, but the attempts at drama are just kinda dull. I like it enough to try the next episode, at any rate

Now I wait for Chainsaw Man and Urusei Yatsura. And then Arknights. And KanColle

  • Welcome to Demon School S3: God, this season is just stacked with must-watch sequels. This show's been a lot of fun thus far, can't wait to see more. Not enough Clara in this episode though.

  • Bocchi the Rock: I liked this a lot. I've been reading the manga, but having actual music to go with the music-themed 4-koma is a huge plus, and poor Bocchi's just precious. Kinda wish the anime found a spot to add in the album cover references that the manga has, but oh well.

I hate when a ton of shows end up on the same day. Somehow the day before tends to have nothing coming out that I'm watching, too. Why can't these shows conform to my schedule and even the releases out.

[up] The music in Bocchi was pretty good, I’m eagerly awaiting a full performance.

And yeah I have the same dilemma, there’s a few days when everything I want to watch comes out followed by a couple of days with nothing to watch. The seasonal watcher mindset is too ingrained in me.

First Impressions

  • Yowamushi Pedal Limit Break: After four years we finally get to the last day of the Inter High tournament. I’m grateful for the quick recap at the beginning, because instead of easing us back in, this season immediately lets go of the brakes. The two main rival teams immediately clash, while Midousuji continues to spice the competition up by continuing to be a slimy, self-serving wildcard. My prediction is that Sohoku will lose this year, setting up a revenge match for the protagonist trio’s third and final year. Whatever happens, I’m in for the ride. Continuing.

Its clearly much more John Woo

First Impressions

  • More than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers: Okay, so students have coursework that requires them to act like a married couple. Uh, sure. But then if you’re really good at acting like a married couple, you… can pick someone else to be your partner? That seems counterintuitive. And the bedrooms can only be opened via fingerprint scanner apparently to prevent hanky panky, as though the bedroom is the only place people can have sex. And anyway why can’t their magical sensor detect lewd activities anyway when it can grade flirting? The worst part is that the primary pairing has no chemistry at all. Or rather their rapport with each other is all over the place. HRMMM. I usually like stupid premises, but this one just fails to run with its concept. Dropping.

[up]Honestly, it sounds overly complicated by its gimmick. If it were simply a guy and a girl who don't like each other being forced to live together that would be a fine premise for a romcom like this. It's the fact that they each have someone they'd rather be with AND they have to pretend to like each other in order to be with them later that makes the series feel really convoluted.
