@ Nachtwandler I prefer it this way, to be honest. Animate what the performance feels like, not how it looks. Can't say they completely succeeded in making it engaging, but I do approve of the attempt.

Edit: So that the page topper isn't too bare-bones, I'll add a bit of praise at Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita. I went into the show with very low expectations, but it is a proof of how something you don't really care for can still engage you if it knows what it is and focuses on doing it well. It's all about excuses to have well animated fights and to do some dungeon crawling. The silly power level imbalances and other trappings of isekai's are holding it back a bit, but the show's been surprisingly enjoyable.

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't just let the whole song play like the previous performances but I did like what little I did hear

[up][up] It would have been good if it was not a stylistic choice to spare resources.

As a rock/metal music fan I feel bad about musical animes that have actual instruments being played lacking the decently animated performances so often.

I like Bang Dream, for example, because it actully has a lot of properly animated gigs (and it was actually a good decision to switch to full 3d in that case specifically bacause it allows to do this with less effort).

To each their own, I suppose. I thought it was entirely fine, especially since Bocchi's reaction to the music is more important than feeling like we're in the club.

I'd rather we get psychedelic visuals for the psychedelic rock band and save resources for the culture festival performance by the actual main characters.

[up]x3 re: Sword Dad: Yeah, I've always enjoyed the series and I like what they're doing with it for the most part (barring some strange choices like changing Fran's reaction to the Blue Cat; in the novel/manga she's wary but excited to kill the Blue Cat, instead of being initially afraid of him.

It's been fun.

Yeah I guess I don’t really mind not seeing te actual playing of the instruments as long as the vibes and music are good. Helps that the psychedelic rock performance was well directed, too.

Meanwhile, Blue Lock episode 10 ratchets up the action. Nice to see the animation hitting highs after a couple of episodes of solid, but not great, animation. Confident they'll do the climax of this arc justice.
I ended up having read beyond this when the episode came out, but it still attacked me with facial expressions that bore into my heart. I am saving my excitement for when the next arc (and thus, the next cour) comes though because it has been one hell of a ride so far (at Volume 7 of the manga atm)...

Actually seeing a male character in Bocchi the rock was kind of surprising. Like yeah Bocchi's dad is there but his eyes are inexplicably censored.

Then again they did mention that he had "the heart of a maiden" so I guess is he meant to be the whole "Anee-san" stereotype (that's basically guys that act like older sister types, I've seen them a bunch in BL games)?

Possibly, yeah. Given the way he's written he's probably intended to be non-descriptly queer, I would guess - he uses stereotypically feminine speech patterns.

It's been fun.

Yeah that guy is definitely queer.

[up][up][up] I don't blame you for reading the manga, the anime has done a really good job on capitalizing on the hype.

Has anyone been watching the new Bleach?

The new Bleach is the most hilariously Bleach thing out there.

The whole attack on Soul Society is A+. Great ramping of tension, good drama and action and hey, this time the enemies are a group they've actually properly foreshadowed before. Kenpachi loses off screen, Byakuya hopefully diesnote  and then Genryusai definitely bites it.

Things turn around when Kurosaki shows up in a kind of asspully, undeserved way and you know the show's gonna take a nosedive. At this moment I muttered to myself "He's gonna get beat so bad and then it's gonna turn out he's a hyperquincy or something." and yep. Then the enemy backs off so the heroes can do their training arc, some people who were seriously dead are only injured and some random people we've never heard of, who are waaaay stronger than everyone, show up and grab Kurosaki and some fan favourites to hyperbolic time chamber them in these humorous vignetters that are very unfunny. Oh and the annoying side kick character is back.

Intent here isn't really to recap the show, but just make the point of how the new season is such a condensed version of itself, of Bleachness, of its tropes in both good and bad. Hype one second, flat and boring the next. I'm both happy and sad that it's back.

I can agree that I rather should have used "contrived". Ichigo showing up there had no narrative weight. Genryusai puts it all on the line, gets duped by his ancient enemy and dies alone, unable to protect his subordinates. Into this scene wanders Ichigo, who has no connection to Genryusai to face this random guy who he knows nothing about.

Narratively, the only reason this is happening is because the writer needs Ichigo to lose to the strongest guy around so he can do his power up thing. Not for the first time. It's also right after one of the dramatic highlights of the season. So emotionally that scene is completely empty. Something the writer pulled out of thin air because he needed the characters here so they could go there. Thus I used asspull, though, granted, it didn't perfectly fit.

[up] Do you mean Noumin Kanren? If so... Well honestly, the most noteworthy thing I can think of is Ilvia, an important person to Al, coming back but as an enemy, but apart from that, it's pretty by-the-numbers

Final Reactions: Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita
There was action, fun times, and much badassery all around, and the fact that there's still more to come later on is a plus! Until then, this has been pretty satisfying!

[up] Depends where you watch it. One Japanese streaming service has Sword Dad one week earlier than the rest of the world. So they just had ep 12, while the rest of us (Including HiDive) are on #11

Final Impressions

Arknights: I did play the game for a bit because I dug its style, and that aesthetic is well and intact throughout the series. There's a rough patch in the middle where the animation quality becomes noticeably stiffer, but aside from that (and the dull direction of the fight scenes) it looks good. Doctor is about as boring as you'd expect from a gacha game protagonist, but the rest of the cast have decently interesting designs and personalities. Amiya in particular gets her first kill, and loses Misha, and has her ideals are challenged. I guess this is why this part is called the prelude. Anyway, the morality of the warring factions should be a lot grayer. Rhodes Island has somehow managed to avoid killing anyone, which is BS. I should be sympathizing with Reunion because of how the Infected are discriminated against, but aside from Skullshatterer and Misha in the final episode, they're constantly portrayed as sneering bad guys that don't even really care about the lives of their comrades. That kinda stuff stands out because there are small details that the show gets right. Overall the writing could use a lot more Show, Don't Tell, and they need to introduce more depth into this conflict, which is currently starkly black and white. The last two episodes do alleviate a lot of these writing issues, and hopefully the freshly announced sequel continues that trend.

You know it's funny because the reunion in the anime is MUCH more sympathetic than in the games at this point. That said there is a general reason why they're acting the way they are so look forward to that.

As for the doctor being boring, yeah I can't argue with that honestly. What made me curious about the anime (and the game to an extent too) was in the first place the choice to go for a gender ambiguousc rather than just defaulting to male like most gacha games. Unfortunately the end result is a character who is so indistinct that you could replace them for a borderline clairvoyant glass of water and achieve the same result. It's weird because even playing the game they didn't feel like this much of a plank of wood, their biggest show of personality was ignoring Amiya's instructions to go and throw rocks at the random ruffians but even with the loss of identity via amnesia they shouldn't be this blank. Hopefully they do a bit better for the next part because there are parts that require doctor to stand on their own.

As for Rhodes Island never killing anyone before that's... complicated? The general intent of Rhodes itself is to achieve maximum gains with the least amount of loses particularly in the long term, but Rhodes Island is a big company with a lot of people inside and a lot of those people HAVE killed others before, just probably not under the Rhodes Island name.

Yeah, part of the murkiness there is that Texas and Exusia are technically not part of Rhodes Island, they're from a different company. That said, they're still working with Rhodes, so their willingness to kill to accomplish Rhodes' goals does necessarily reflect onto Rhodes itself. Same with Franka and Liskarm. That said, they did polish up Rhodes a tiny bit; in the game it wasn't strongly implied that Rhodes never killed, just that they went for the minimum casualties possible.

As far as Reunion being made more sympathetic goes, that's going to really go into overdrive when we get to season 2 (for the most part - the individual leaders will still probably draw mixed reactions, and there''s backstory that won't be revealed until a probable season 3). But I'll post what I said elsewhere:

So, having gotten to Amiya's "you were the first to hate" line in episode 6, I think part of the reason people reacted to it so strongly is because of the medium. Amiya's the main character and her face is on the app; even in console games, it's rare for a character like that to not be treated (justifiedly or not) as the writers talking directly to the audience, and presenting the Point of the Story. But Amiya's just flat-out, bluntly, wrong there. She's an angry, stressed child on a battlefield, and she's making incorrect assumptions about how much she knows and what the situation is. I don't think for a second the writers want us to think Amiya is right there or to agree with her, especially knowing what we do about how Ursus treats Infected.

But without that extra context it's harder to say for sure, especially since, again, a lot of games, anime, and anime-of-games use characters like Amiya to tell you what the story is.

[up][up] I can at least see Tallulah (did I get her name right) and W getting some appropriately depressing backstories. That kid that hunts people for sport though, whew boy.

[up] I think Rhodes going for minimum casualties makes a lot more sense compared to anime Rhodes where it's implied they don't kill, unless it's one of their partner companies doing the killing.

For what it's worth, I also don't think the narrative really paints Amiya as "right". She constantly seems like a naive teenager who's out of her depth.
