Alright. So as I mentioned on the main thread, I just beat Future Redeemed.

Now I need to catch up on all the discussion on the ending.

So Fiora is a sword (mainly Lucky...Seven), the worlds appear to re-merge at the end of Future Redeemed rather than being separate again like the original ending implied, and I'm not clear how X plays into things.

So someone explain everything.

X is the unknown because it's unexplainable.

Though the idea that the combined civilization at the end of 3 becomes Samaar is an intriguing one, I must admit.

The theory I got from Luxin is the combined worlds welcome Kos-mos and eventually Shion and the rest of the Xenosaga cast or their descendents. Shion's descendent activates the machine that saves humanity by sending them to another dimension where they become the ancestors of X's humanity.

So, what was the deal with Skye Bennett and her headcanon?

As I recall she doesn't like the harem/polygamy ending and prefers Rex/Pyra

Really not a big deal but some people take these things way too seriously...

I think her original tweet was just something like "My headcanon is Pyra and Rex got together, while Mythra is off living her best single lady life" or something like that. After people exploded at her for that perfectly reasonable opinion, she got a little snippy about the "harem," which of course made people angrier.

My thought prior to 3's ending was that Rex hooked up with whoever he named Pneuma, which would be who he prefered.

Considering Bennett is asexual, I can understand where she is coming from. In the end, it's her opinion and it doesn't takeaway anything for me.

Honestly, I don't care about her sexuality. I don't care if she's personally in a F/F/F/M polyamorous relationship, she'd still have the right to say "I don't think this one works, here's my headcanon." Just like I have the right to disagree with her.

Even her getting snippy was in direct response to fans yelling at her. Should she have kept a cool head and disengaged? Sure. But the fans yelling at her were already in the wrong.

Yeah I didn't have an issue with her take. I'm genuinely disappointed to find out that Xenoblade has the same ratio of chuds as the rest of the gaming landscape. sad

Maybe I'm reading her words wrong on what she has said but it felt like she was being a little aggressive on her words, with her saying that because she voiced them she has more of a say so on what happen to them in their lives after XBC 2.

I think that's the part people take issue with.

If she wants to set her own headcanon, fine. But her suggesting that she gets to decide things just because she voiced the character(s) is ticking people off.

That's extremely normal though. Actors are always treated as if they are the characters they portray, with special insights into their characters minds, thoughts and feelings, and what happens to them after the story ends. There's a reason that actors are the ones with top billing at conventions instead of writers.

People are being really weird about Skye Bennett saying she prefers the default pairing over any sort of harem.

I can't really agree with that as it's the writers that got the final say so on their characters with actors and voice actors are just to bring that character to life, so for the most part what Skye headcanon is fine but when she got people disagreeing with her she then escalated the issue by pulling the "I'm a voice actor of this characters so I known more then you" which is what I remembered happening.

If that's true, then that shows how well an actor can identify with their character. Unfortunately, it can backfire when they feel like they know the characters more than the staff members behind the development of said character.

I'm not at all surprised that "Gigachad Rex" attracted the worst kinds of fans while also exposing a lot of the more "neutral" Big Name Fans as surreptitiously those kinds of people deep inside, even if they nominally are tolerant of other minorities in the sense of not wanting to see them killed.

Quite a few popular users were revealed to be OK with sending death threats and harassment and basically accusing Skye Bennett of being polyphobic and rightwing despite regularly harassing queer fans of the series who so much as dared to interpret the games as having leftwing themes, even though these readings were more or less confirmed by Takahashi himself in the guidebook. It's also not surprising that the half of the fanbase who isn't promulgating the Gigachad Rex memes unironically has openly disavowed the meme as a complete disrespect to Rex's character or got behind the Rex/Shulk ship as much out of spite as the actual Ho Yay between them.

That's not exactly what happened. As someone who follows her on social media I do agree she didn't handle it the most gracefully (she similarly also got a little overly invested in the Addam/Mythra ship prior to the release of the Torna DLC recontextualizing them, but while she wasn't happy it never escalated into character ownership there either), what happened was a lot of Gigachad Rex fans, who tend to get overly invested in Rex as a self-insert Escapist Character rather than his actual merits, pushed that narrative anyway because they wanted to take advantage of culture war discourse to paint her as a polyphobic rightwinger and themselves as persecuted pro-polyamory minority activists and victims.

This is despite the fact that many of the people who were the nastiest to Bennett and the heaviest in weaponizing polyphobia accusations against her then having a pattern of harassing people who actually treat Rex/Pyra/Mythra/Nia as a proper polycule where the girls are equally in love with each other rather than a unidirectional M/F harem.

I distinctly remember one of the main instigators of the Skye Bennett harassment leaving disgruntled comments towards artists who made comedic posts about the Mythra/Nia ship after Aionios Moments showed Mio with the Pneuma core crystalnote  and more or less accused them of going too far in taking concept art out of context. When they weren't even that serious to begin with and were just having fun with the (accidentally?) implied bisexuality.

I'm only half serious about this, but I blame the jackasses who decided to have Rex just Marry Them All anyway, instead of just choosing a single person.

Harems suck.

[up]harems suck when they are just for the power fantasy of dating multiple girls/guys/everybody like persona or trails for example, but when the series is able to just build a legit story around a harem then it becomes better then you think.

[up][up]well its a good thing that I just view Rex as himself and view me as myself, while just disagreeing with Skye.

It is pretty frustrating how much pushback the YMMV page gets from certain users against any claims that the game is a criticism of capitalism, authoritarianism, and conservatism despite those messages literally being in the text. 2 brought in a lot of people with right-of-center politics thanks to its own muddling handling of them relative to the other three's much more overtly leftwing themes and they've been a consequent plague on any attempt at nuanced discussion thereof.

1 does get some accusations of supposed centrist Golden Mean Fallacy messaging, and 3 gets accused of promoting racial resegregation and conservative monarchism and that the goal of the Liberators was to combat the evils of radical modernity by restoring the world back to the Good Old Ways, but it's usually bad-faith Fandom Rivalry nonsense from fans who only like 2 trying to start fights with fans of the rest of the series by positioning their favorite as the solitary game in the franchise with any worthwhile messaging.

It's pretty clear by now that both 1 and 3 have the same left-revolutionary Inherent in the System message, albeit more abstract/applicable in 1's case, that being "the only way to win is by recognizing the system, represented by Zanza/Moebius, as the true evil and upending it entirely in favor of an egalitarian humanist way of life instead of trying to win within its confines, as it'll just maintain the cyclic Forever War"). It sucks because any attempt at discussing the games' interesting political themes gets watered down by game-versus-game fanboy wars.

Yep and that sucks the of fun out of the game but those type of people will used anything and everything as a podem to spout their rancid world views, even if the game or series was using them in navigate manner.

Shifting the subject off fan reaction to the themes to the themes themselves... I do still find the fact Eunie flat-out quotes Critique of the Gotha Programme both fascinating and insanely bold.[lol]
Prior to that point I was second guessing whether I was reading too much into the Flame Clocks as an allegory for currency, but... no, the subtext is just text there.

[up]Jin from 2? I can see why he'd be pitiable but I find it hard to hate him.

Torna (the organization) is interesting to me, they're introduced as (and are) terrorists but as the game progresses the narrative stops treating any of them as outright wrong, and more as just victims lashing out against a broken system. Even Malos is only stopped because he needs stopped and Rex is genuinely upset to see him go; in contrast, Amalthus is treated with contempt due to being someone who can fix how broken Alrest is but ultimately chooses not to out of apathy.

Well, Zeke seemed to pity him a little.

While I get the feeling he didn't totally understand Amalthus' deal, I feel like he was probably the closest.

As for Jin, the best you could say about him is that he died when Lora did, even though he made himself immortal in that moment.

Edit: Though the backstabbing at the beginning of the game was a massive dick move.
