Odd TV Tropes confessions

Spun off the main odd confessions thread; this thread is for odd confessions related to TV Tropes itself.

Excessive complaining isn't allowed anywhere on the site. Keep it out of this thread.

I have noticed some of the posts on the Odd confessions thread are related to TV Tropes. I thought, why not make a separate thread for such confessions?

I felt guilty about having to remove some of the real life examples on Mandela Effect. I would not have removed them if they didn't violate site policy. I enjoyed reading those examples, and I'm sure the people who wrote them are not happy about them being removed.

I think I have 3 modes as a troper: (1) Formal, making edits to the wiki. (2) Casual, playing in Forum Games or frequenting Yack Fest. (3) Mixed, contributing with both edits and dipping into forum fun.

Mode 4 would be a hiatus.

When I'm in Mode 2, the case most of the time is that I'm brainrotting on some media and it'll show in my avatar (often a character of said current interest) and in my FG posts, probably role-playing as them (but I dare not ever step into the RP forum lmao).

For Mode 3, I double down on the brainrot by working on my favourite media's work pages and depicting them in FG posts, the former of which will often fuel the latter. A good example would be for when I made Laughing Jack's page.

But now I'm shifting back to Mode 1, which feels alike to recharging my social battery, and I only touch the fora for example help or cleanup. I even unfollow most of the Just For Fun section forums that I can find easily. Just sticking to my notepad and sandbox pages for a while. In around 2 weeks, however, I expect Mode 4.

[up]If I had to categorize my site activity, maybe it would be the following:

  1. A mix of formal and informal when editing the wiki. Formal when it comes to following and enforcing editing policies and the wording to an extent, and informal if there's a way to follow the third item in Clear, Concise, Witty.
  2. Formal on the left side of the forums. Not everything is 100% serious, but discussion regarding policy and maintenance merits more serious discussion than other forum activity, especially if I'm the one moderating it.
  3. Informal on the right side of the forums, particularly because the rules being more lenient means there's less of a need to put on the mod hat (particularly because I've been taking a more lenient approach to Yack Fest moderation than I did earlier this year), and mainly because the discussions tend to be less serious. That, and insomnia often results in me posting while tired, and when I'm tired I tend to get more talkative (which might explain why I ended up sticking around on Yack Fest after initially just cross-referencing changes to a policy page that were taken to Wiki Talk after a conversation on Yack Fest).

I suppose an actual confession related to 3 is what I said about how more recently I've been approaching Yack Fest moderation more leniently than I previously was, probably as a result of being on here since mid to late summer gave me enough time to get used to how things are done here. In fact, I think this post is the only Yack Fest post I've made with the mod hat on this month, and that post was just a joke about the mod hat and not a proper mod post. (I did startle at least one person with that post, and that was completely unintentional.)

Edit: Accidentally said "I think this post was the only Yack Fest post I've made with the mod hat on", which isn't true, and wasn't what I meant. I meant to say the only one from this month.

[up]Now that I think of it, I don't think I've mentioned in this thread that I completely stopped moderating OTC in the middle of the year because of how exhausting it is. (I've mentioned this in at least one other thread already.)

Having a paranoia of a hypothetical future policy where all examples require "which chapter" citation and Word of God citation it was used intentionaly.

[up]I think the current situation of requiring things like that only in a small amount of specific cases (citations for where the example came from on pages for unreleased works and Unfortunate Implications, and Word of God citations for examples of Creator's Apathy and, more recently, Author's Saving Throw) is ideal, because I think adding those requirements to everything would be a pain in the ass for everyone, since editors would have their time taken up if they have to sift through that information every time an example is added (particularly when adding more than one example in a single edit), and enforcing the policy would result in mods having their own time taken up. Yeah, there's a running in-joke that the site takes up people's time, but going from merely taking up people's time to wasting people's time would be bad.

To contextualize the second bit, it's regarding the occasional "the author's intent and the curtains are blue" comments. Rarely, but every now and then someone argues something isn't a trope because writers aren't trying to promote a message of some kind through it, or because there's no history why the trope got popular.

When I chose Larry from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as my avatar, it was originally intended as Self-Deprecation, and I didn't expect him to become sort of an icon among people my age (if his entry on EnsembleDarkhorse.Pokemon is anything to go by).

Any time someone makes a forum post / query with bad grammar, I'm like "please don't be a new editor with a page worth of edits in history. Oh dammit."

Wary of the thin line between telling others what the policies are and how to handle specific situations, and mini-modding.

[up]Between grammar being mentioned in the header of the Edit Banned thread and the existence of a thread for getting help with grammar, I don't see anything wrong with pointing it out, especially if the grammar thread is linked to.

I'm pretty sure it's already been brought up by non-mods in past queries with bad grammar, including ones that were made before I was a mod (though I don't think I was ever the one to point it out).

[up]For a reply and a confession in a single post, I don't know what the policy on pointing out misuse in that thread is, even though I probably should by now. (I don't think it would be wrong to do that, but I didn't think to ask about whether it is or not.)

I just don't get why people find formatting difficult when the problem is typically "there are 4 [ but 2 ], hm..."

Not so much "odd" as it is vaguely depressing/worrying, but I had to leave the forums for a while because a group of people (not going to tell which because of privacy concerns) were either pissing me off or weirding me out.

I keep getting thrown off when I see Ayumi-chan post not just because I think this is the first time I've seen anyone other than myself with an avatar with Adol Christin from Ys (despite that series seeming to be more popular in the West than it was a decade ago), but also because the art in her avatar is exactly the same as the one I used earlier this year, just cropped differently and with a transparent background.

Edit: For reference, this is her current avatar:

[up]I only recall mentioning how often avatars come up in the meta thread, and I haven't kept track of whether avatars come often much in this thread, aside from maybe if this thread is where someone mentioned confusing WarJay and BearyScary with each other a few months ago.

...Of course, a drinking game for when avatars come up anywhere on Yack Fest would kill anyone who tries it unless there's a clause saying "except in the avatar thread" after "take a shot anytime avatars come up on Yack Fest".

I love adding tropes to JFF pages (such as JustForFun.Tv Tropes Cafe or JustForFun.Tv Tropes Superhero Team) so on occasion I'll skim the "new tropes" list to see if any can go there. I guess this isn't really all that "odd", but it is a confession that I get genuine enjoyment out of growing the JFF pages even if they're a dumb, not-serious part of the wiki.
