The original Unreal is still king for me. Although I do have a soft spot for Unreal II despite its reputation as being a weak sequel. I still enjoyed it - lots of good set pieces. I never did get much into the championship or multiplayer only games of the series, being mainly a single player fan primarily.
Well, there's this little matter of the Unreal Engine 2 onwards being littered with third-party tech, so there's a LOT of legal matters to solve.
More or less the kind of hassle John Carmack and company back at Id had to go through in order to release the source code of their engines. IdTech4 in particular was quite hard to get released, and the code we got was quite... crippled. And to make matters worse, it was released under the more restrictive GPLv3 license, outright incompatible with previous incarnations of GPL such as GPLv2.
As a hint of how difficult releasing the code of an engine is, take a look at the Credits section of a game (yep, the second part people likes to skip reading alongside the EULA) and check how many "X technology powered by Y company" appear. The more they appear, the fewer the chances to get that engine released.
So... some UT (1999) news.
A month after the Unreal v227j patch launched, two public beta releases for Unreal Tournament were, well, released. The latest is v469 Release Candidate 3, which can be downloaded from here
.
Bump!
I'm sure most of you heard the news, but Epic Games, after delisting the whole series at the tail end of 2022, granted the guys of OldUnreal permission to release full game installers for both Unreal I Gold and Unreal Tournament: Game of The Year Edition. The installers not only install the full game, but also patch it to the latest community patch (v227j in the case of UGold, 469d in the case of UTGOTY).
If you have any doubts about the legalities, this article from Gaming On Linux
, where they actually contacted Epic themselves, actually confirms that these are legal.
This means from November 12th. onwards, both Unreal Gold and UT: GOTY are effectively "free to (download and) play". (Freeware?)
I'm sure there were efforts. That said, I don't expect them to be fruitful. UT2004 already has UT2341
(I don't know if a similar mod exists for UT3), and it never went anywhere.
Guess UT can only be UT under the Unreal Engine 1. 🤷♂️

The composers of the original UT99 soundtrack are going to release a remix album
. It's titled Tournament Rematch. There are three remixes already released as samples:
"Unreal Tournament Title"
"Foregone Destruction"
"Go Down"

Starting this thread to discuss all things Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Championship and later games.
Why today? Because after nearly a decade under development and A LOT of issues, the Epic Games-blessed community patch for Unreal I version v227j has finally been released!
And it contains QUITE a lot of changes
.
(P.S.: If your AV blocks the D/L, FRET NOT! It's a false-positive. Such is the price for digital signing.)
And speaking of Unreal, Nightdive Studios head honcho Stephen "Pripyat" Kick has expressed interest in remastering the game. All that remains is Epic/Tim Sweeney
/Tencentto give the OK.https://twitter.com/pripyatbeast/status/1532883275391201280
NOTE: It's NOT an Unreal Tournament remake, just plain ol' Unreal, so bear that in mind before posting the wccft*ch article (which is fake news).
