Cleanup of Bleached Underpants?

Per a recent post in Is This An Example, it was suggested that a short term cleanup thread be posted about the Webcomics folder in the trope Bleached Underpants.

The first sentence in the trope definition says:

"Many characters have a past connecting them back to a previous sometimes-unwholesome work."

However, the Webcomics folder contains reference to several webcomic authors who drew NSFW art or comics and now do family-friendly stuff. That doesn't seem to fall under the trope definition. I'm thinking they should be cut.

Looking further, this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The Arts folder references painters who have done mainstream stuff and NSFW art as well. Other folders contain examples of actors ranging from Al Franken and Makoto Shinkai who have done more ribald work in addition to mainstream stuff.

In short, examples like this seem to be troping Real Life people, not a character. I'm thinking all such examples should be cut.

Feedback welcome.

I'd say the whole trope page needs a cleanup, there's a ton of examples that are just "artist also drew porn at one point".

[up] Thanks. I'm thinking I should go through each folder and delete anything that doesn't specifically relate to a single fictional character. I'll wait a day or two to get more feedback, but barring any thoughts to the contrary, I'll evaluate and cut accordingly.

To be honest the description is a bit vague too, it sort of mumbles around about whether it's a work being cleaned up for more mainstream audiences, or an author/creator who had a much dirtier past.

I believe from most discussion it's intended to be the former, but I don't get that from the first half of the description at all.

Maybe it's just that I'm sensitive about it after running into someone who was explicitly doing this, but the entire notion that "a creator did NSFW work, then SFW work" is inherently remarkable gives me pearl-clutching vibes. I definitely do not prefer that interpretation of the definition.

To add on, not to rib on whoever wrote it, but this

"Many characters have a past connecting them back to a previous sometimes-unwholesome work."

Is a really weak opening sentence. The trope is supposed to be about works being "sanitized", but this line about characters is a lot looser and more ambiguous (and isn't exactly what the trope is about either).

The page pic is also an example of the "did NSFW work before" interpretation, which doesn't help matters. It's not that she turned one of her pornographic films into a serious mainstream one with some cleaning, rather, she was a porn actress who went into mainstream film (at least that's the impression I get as someone whose only experience with Ménage à 3 is from how often it appears as a page image).

We’re not supposed to be troping real life people on this site anyway. The trope description seems to be about characters who had a prurient past that got cleaned up in later work, but talks about creators in such a way that it suggests they’re possibly tropeable. Agreed, the description is kind of rambling and vague — it’s not the best.

Maybe rewriting the description into something pared down and more focused is in order. I can give it a shot and post it here, though if someone else wants to have at it, that would be fine.

I've gotten a start on chopping out problem entries from this trope. Let me know if there are issues.
