[up] Isekais seem to make up the majority of Japanese fantasy at the moment, and they're going through a degree of backlash due to several reasons.

Here in the west or in Japan? With that in mind, I'm well aware of the backlash that MANY rightfully receive due being trashy schlock with loads of problematic aspects(rape, slavery, etc.), but there also seems to be a weird blindspot about them where people really don't seem to grasp that not all isekai are alike or have the same audiences and will thus be built differently for better or worse.

I don't really like blatant wish-fulfillment fantasies and nothing I've heard about Isekai Yakkyoku makes me think it's not one

RedSavant Since: Jan, 2001
#81: Jun 1st 2022 at 8:25:14 PM

See, you would think not all isekai are the same or built for the same audience, but very broadly speaking, I think that's generally false. It's just that there's a number of intersecting sliding scales: Power Fantasy (going from "I want farm life to be stress-free and easy" to "I want to be able to rip the spines out of thinly-veiled versions of my childhood bullies"); Specialness (going from "I am trained in a specialist field and my knowledge is useful here" to "I have never exerted effort on anything, I'm just special" with a side-stop through "I know what mayonnaise is" or "I have Google"); and Girl (going from "I want to meet one special girl who adores me" to "I must have a new big titty waifu every time one of the old ones runs out of character writing, which is once an episode"). Then tinted with a separate value tracking how much Spite and Sexual Deviance there is in it.

From what I've heard, Isekai Yakkyoku stays on the lower end of those three spectrums, though with the caveat that this guy's pharmaceutical knowledge shouldn't apply to plants he's never heard of on a different planet. Or maybe that's some other pharmacy isekai show... which is the real crux of the issue, which is that at this point you have to tell even the "niche concept" isekais apart by what color hair the primary waifu has.

Spriggan's up via Netflix.

I'mma watch it ASAP and see how different it is from the 1980s manga.

[up] After two episodes of Spriggan…

The character design is very '90s-inspired, and so are the info-dump mid-fight. There's definitely a certain amount of nostalgia factor involved. The CG can be a bit meh at times.

I only have the 1998 movie as a reference (I bought it in VHS when it came out), and of course the fight sequences are less impressive, but they clearly put in some work in the characterization, instead of making everyone a cypher. I was surprised they managed to condense the movie into a single episode by trimming everything into the mountain set piece, and they still left enough room to properly introduce the ARCAM cannon fodder and Jean to the point that we can actually care about them. The movie did nothing about that, even with more room to breathe.

I also didn't notice that episodes are really double length until after I finished watching them, so the plot clips really quickly.

The 1998 OVA has the assumption that viewers have read the entire manga. At the time, the manga finished its run in Japan.

Oh my god, it's been a week since everything else got an start date, and Maid ga Ayashii still doesn't. At this point I'm having to wonder if it'll even end up in this season at all

But, uh, we do have airdates for everything else. And PVsnote . And a lot more information on the websites in most cases

I'm not keeping track of pre-airs for the most part, but there is a big one for RWBY: First three episodes will be streaming on June 24-26

Commentary on airdates and promotional stuff:

  • Lotta late starts this season. Probably just a coincidence with multiple high-profile sequels, but odd
  • Shine Post still isn't acknowledging that it has male characters anywhere other than it's story synopsis. I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish
  • Samidare still doesn't have a character section. I am kinda worried about it, especially with that PV
  • Some shows wait until they have a solid PV to start promoting themselves in serious, because the PV release will be when there will be the most eyes on them. Some shows wait until they have the airdates worked out to release a PV, since the first will be the most viewed, and you want people to know how to watch. Generally you don't do both, since that can mean having less than a month to try to build hype. Isekai Harem did both. Except it was a shitty PV, no new key visual and the website barely got new content. Incredibly underwhelming

Spriggan... The script is incredibly clunky. This feels intentional, to add to the 80s-ness, but it's still bad. Speaking of the 80s, it's supposed to be a setting update, but no teens dress like that anymore, and it's clearly set in the cold war?

Re Spriggan and the Cold War: We might be able to justify this one. Warning: current politics. ETA: won't let me put this under spoilers. Russia under Putin does think that it is, or at least should be, one of the Great Powers as a counter to the decadent nations of the West, especially America. Thus the expansionism trying to bring former USSR territories back under its direct control. It's not too implausible for our Russian cyborg to have swallowed the propaganda whole and believe that while the CIA would use the Shrine of Fire for evil, his government would only use it to restore the balance of power. He might have been naive to not realize the wind weasel guy would betray him for personal power the moment it was convenient, but Russian dude was on a lot of drugs at the time.

With MAL's Summer 2022 preview out, it is time once again for me to give my anime for this season!

     From Previous Cours
  • Classroom of the Elite S2: Just recently finished the first season, and I'm excited to hear more of Shōya Chiba's low voice (and also more a bit more drama)
  • Shadows House S2: Read the manga already, and I sure as hell am excited to see what'll be adapted!
  • Orient 2nd cour: Also read the part of the manga that'll be adapted! The Awajishima arc is definitely going to be one hell of a ride, and I am sure as hell ready to see it adapted irrespective of what anyone thinks!
  • Love All Play 2nd cour: I honestly did not expect this to go on for 2 cours, but I guess it's fine enough... If it ended in EP 12, there would definitely be something missing...
  • Aoashi 2nd cour: Of course I would be ready for this! I can't wait to see more of Aoi on the road to his goal!
  • Summertime Render 2nd cour: When it gets dark, it really hits! Can't wait to see how this'll end!
     Debuting This Cour
  • Kami Kuzu☆Idol: Not sure what much to expect other than it being an idol anime, but might as well give it a try...
  • Shoot! Goal to the Future: Another soccer anime filled with all men, but this one is actually based on a 90s manga... But Chiaki Kobayashi's on main (and he has been recently rising to many main roles), so I'm in!!
  • Lycoris Recoil: Also do not know what to expect of this, but from what I heard, this'll have some Hidden Depths, so...
  • You0 DECO: Also also do not know what to expect save for possible social commentary...
  • Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life: Another anime where Chiaki Kobayashi'll voice main, and also another dose of isekai/fantasy!
  • Isekai Ojisan: Going in for the comedy, staying for Takehito Koyasu!!
  • Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari: Going in for the yakuza & babysitting, staying for the men...
  • Bucchigire!: Going in for the Bakumatsu, staying for something a la Orient because at this point, I should get used to my tastes!
  • Prima Doll: Another anime that seems innocent on the outside but a bit dark within, or so I think...
  • Hoshi no Samidare: Going in this blind... The premise seemed interesting, and Jun'ya Enoki's there, so...
  • Kuro no Shoukanshi: Going in for the possible darkness, probably staying because it's a personal rule...
  • Isekai Yakkyoku: Another dose of Isekai, and possibly another anime with Hidden Depths...

Others:
Dr. Stone: Ryuusui: This is mainly a special, but I might as well include it here because I have to wonder what the deal with Ryuusui is, and I do not wish to read the completed manga yet...

This'll be a pretty turbulent season for me, and it's not even Fall yet...

The Summer 2022 RC preview is out!

Definitely watching

  • Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer: I am so sad. I am so sad that this masterpiece of a manga seems doomed to a substandard anime adaptation. I will watch it because I love Biscuit Hammer, but I know it will break my heart. It could have been so much more.
  • Lycoris Recoil: Apparently the framework for this wacky cafe anime was drafted by the writer of Ben-to. And that is all I needed to hear.
  • Yurei Deco: It's about a detective club operating in cyberspace draped in vibrant technopop visuals, helmed by Masaaki Yuasa. Of freaking course I am in.
  • Tokyo Mew Mew New: Another cool reboot, I hope it's at the quality standard of Dai's Great Adventure and Captain Tsubasa.
  • Yokufashi no Uta: Once I heard the anime was coming out I deliberately put off reading the manga. I've heard a lot of good things, and I hope this delivers. The last vampire romcom I've read certainly did.
  • Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou: It's going to be uncomfortable on so many levels. I'm so excited to dive right back into the Abyss!
  • Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru: I'm gonna need some fluff after watching MiA, won't I?
  • Shadows House Season 2: And then we have this series that's like the exact midpoint between cutesy fluff and abject horror. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
  • Love Live! Superstar!!: Probably the only idol thing I'm gonna be watching this cour. In my opinion it's also the best Love Live so far.
  • Hataraku no Maou-sama Season 2: And then this rises from nine years past to continue Summer's streak of white-hot second seasons. Will Sadao finally rule over MgRonalds?
  • Danmachi: My hands cannot hold all of these sequels. Holy crap.
  • Fuuto Tantei: Kamen Rider anime!

Three episode rule

  • RWBY: Hyousetsu Teikoku: Apparently the story got rewritten, and boy did RWBY's story need some work. It's the main reason I'm considering watching this. Not sure if SHAFT will also be able to do Monty Oum's (bless his soul) sublime combat choreography justice.
  • Engage Kiss: Mid-2000s harem rom com sounds about right. The sci fi aspect could be interesting too.
  • Prima Doll: Robot girls do cute things as they undergo an existential crisis.
  • Kuro no Shoukanshi: Gotta respect a power fantasy isekai starring an MC who literally just wants to kick a lot of ass. If it can go wild with the action scenes, then it's golden.
  • Teppen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: That's fifteen exclamation points, my friends. I counted.
  • Bucchigire!: Having the Shinsengumi be staffed by criminals is an interesting idea. Now all it needs is some of that slick samurai swordplay action.
  • Classroom of the Elite 2nd Season: I don't think the first season lived up to its premise, and I found the characterization, mind games and social commentary considerably lacking. So I'm not expecting much.
  • My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex: Spicy.
  • Isekai Ojisan: I've been meaning to read the manga.
  • Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari: Hinamatsuri but without the crazy psychic stuff? Might still be interesting though.
  • Chimimo: What a fun name to say.
  • KJ File: Initially read it as Killjoy File and my mental image of the show was glorious. But then I learned it meant kaiju and those are cool too I guess.

One episode rule:

  • Shoot! Goal to the Future I would have never expected a sequel to Aoki Densetsu Shoot! of all things. But man, this anime picked the worst time to air. Ao Ashi and Blue Lock are going to eat its lunch.
  • Vermeil in Gold: An old-fashioned ecchi series might be a fun watch.
  • Extreme Hearts: Hyper Sports. Ooookay.

Not watching

  • Rental Girlfriend: The reddit threads for the weekly manga chapters have more plot progression than the manga chapters themselves.
  • Kami Kuzu Idol: The ghost possession thing is a bit interesting, but otherwise seems like your typical idol show.
  • Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro: Utawhattawhat.
  • Luminous Witches: Could never get into the Strike Witches franchise.
  • Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life: Yawn.
  • Overlord: Checked out after the first season.
  • Jashin-chan Dropkick X: Dropkicked out of my watchlist.
  • Slave Harem in the Labyrinth of the Other World: The MC gets a job class called Sex Maniac. That tells you all you need to know about this show.
  • Prince of Tennis: It's still not a good sports series.
  • Isekai Pharmacy: This is like, the third or fourth one?
  • Orient: Didn't watch the first season.
  • Shinepost: Would have watched if it was called Shitpost instead.
  • The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious: It's not my thing.

Not to mention everything that's continuing from last season. This is going to be hard to schedule around. Whew.

[up]

Tensei Kenja and Otherworldy Pharmacy are legitimately solid and should warrant the 3 Episodes since they're very different from the norm.

Tensei Kenja is about a guy who got isekai'd before all of the tropes and cliches we associate with anime and manga so he misses a lot of sighs that would be incredibly obvious to viewers and REALLY does not play into any real power fantasy aspect since his body was comatose on Earth while he was away(he "wakes up" when his journey ends).

Otherworldy Pharmacy is an actual serious look into bringing REAL pharmaceutical development and medical socialization into sort of medieval/Renaissance era France setting and while there's magic and the MC has some very powerful skills for his job, it's not "Fix All" solution.

Well, I guess things are starting

RWBY: Like the original, but better in every way. Including the fight scenes, somehow. Definitely some parts some parts that read kinda oddly if you're not familiar with the original work (mostly in episode 3), but still solid enough. Will be checking out episode 4

Bastard: ...Yep, this ran in a shounen mag in the 90s (late 80s, whatever). Not very animated and heavy on Talking Is a Free Action. Reminds me of Inuyasha? Edgier, but weaker on the horror. Well, at least in single the episode I watched. Might watch another if I see a convincing argument that it improves

First Impressions

  • RWBY: Have to agree with the apparent consensus that it is better than the original web animation. Better plot progression, better characterization, better writing, (though the third episode rushed through some things, and it makes considerably more sense if the viewer is already familiar with what happens) and better voice acting. The action scenes don't quite reach the awesomeness of Monty Oum's choreography, but they adopt their own brand of fast and flashy stylishness that also suits RWBY. There's an interesting deviation from the original story about the Nightmare Grimm which I'm looking forward to learning more about. Huh, I think I'm actually going to watch RWBY again. Continuing
  • Bastard: It's a campy edgelord anime from the 90s, how can I not like it? And since all the episodes are out it'll do nicely for filling in the empty days. Continuing.

Initial Reactions:
Shoot! Goal to the Future: Did I just unknowingly start a series that turned out to be a sequel set in the future where the original cast are grown up, and a new generation of soccer boys are on main? Apparently so, and compared to Aoashi, this one's a little more laced with drama (and also more fruity), albeit not as strong... Can't wait to see this through!
Lycoris Recoil: I'm getting a bit of dystopia vibes with the DA. Other than that, that was one action-packed way to start the series! I am not sure how this'll all turn out though, but one things for certain: Chisato x Takina!

  • Rent-a-Girlfriend S2: Watching this purely to see how much worse the MC gets. And how much more intolerable Ruka gets. And if Chizuru really does have her character completely flipped into being just as terrible as everyone else is at this point. It's such a shame that the show won't ever be as cringe as the people unironically trying to make this the Morbius of anime, though.

  • Lycoris Recoil: This was quite an entertaining intro. Having not watched Gunslinger Girls, I am assuming this is going to be a more light-hearted version of that? You basically have cute secret agent girls that fight crime, and a couple of odd-balls get paired together and busy themselves with jobs that aren't solely about shooting terrorists or something. I appreciate that Takina isn't just a needlessly aggressive murderhobo that utterly despises Chisato for not being a murderhobo. Though I guess she does need to work on her people skills.

  • TEPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: I did not hate this, but I don't think I'll continue it. It's essentially a bunch of manzai comedy trio girls doing silly things, so plenty of quirkiness abound. That said, the jokes don't hit super well for me, I guess? Nothing that was outright terrible, I guess I just don't care for the style of comedy.

I'll be watching Rwby as well, once I find the time for it.
