People have been arrested for this sort of behavior, and we're supposed to award Will Smith for it because he's Will Smith?

[up][up] It was a single open handed slap. Who the hell calls the cops over that?

Will Smith just slapped Chris Rock on stage and won his first Oscar in the same night.

Oscar for what, Biggest Tantrum ever Televised around the Whole World? Seriously, seeing men protecting the honor of their wives with violence on live TV is something that I'd expect from trashy Italian mid-afternoon scripted talk shows, not one of the biggest and most important award ceremonies ever.

Chris Rock's joke was dumb, unfunny and in poor taste, but 1) it's not like stuff like that never happened before 2) that doesn't excuse Smith to act like a caveman and scream from the top of his lungs instead of, you know, acting civilized or targeting Rock with another joke of his own. Acting that way also gives ammo to the "you can't say anything anymore" crowd on top of everything else.

"Effective Altruism" is just another bunch of horsesh*t.

I feel bad for Questlove in all this, his Oscar win was completely overshadowed by that moment.

I mean, you can say that about everyone last night, but he was the one who had to out on stage while that moment was still fresh.

I'm still unconvinced it wasn't staged. It was all just too... convenient. Like, we all know the Oscars have been dealing with declining viewership and this kind of spectacle fits the bell quite perfectly. Then Rock rolled with it way too well. Plus, if you're going to tell me "this man is the best at acting" then, well, it's pretty easy for me to believe that he's... acting.

I am of two minds. On one hand Chris' joke was offensive, dumb and should not have been made. On the other Will legit assaulted the man.

Personally, I’m convinced that the Oscars would be infinitely better if hosted by the Muppets.

I would like to see that and it wouldn't be to weird. I mean after all Donald Duck once co-hosted the Oscars.

It was a great speech, too.

I haven't seen many documentaries in recent years, but all of the nominees this year sound really interesting, I'm going to try and check them out.

It goes to show that having comedians hosting the Oscar was a big mistake. Who needs someone cracking obnoxious jokes in a reward show?

[up]x5 I’ve actually put a bit of thought how this would work.

  • We open with the Muppets doing their classic theme song, except it’s the version I quoted above.
  • then we go to Kermit, the MC of the night who welcomes us to the Muppets Take the Oscars and introducing any potential special guest star(s),(And maybe some sort of gag where scooter or Fozzie runs in telling Kermit about something going wrong.)
  • Then we would go into a quick sketch of some type. Maybe a fozzie comedy routine?
  • once we get into the awards, they would be presented by different Muppets, interspersed with quick sketches, a musical number or two, and potentially some sort of “backstage plot” of the Muppets trying to hold everything together as things go wrong.
  • So Miss Piggy might do best leading actress, Rowlf does best original score, Gonzo does best visual effects, Uncle Deadly on best costume design, etc.
  • Statler and Waldorf would be in the balcony, heckling.

And I just realized that I just basically turned it into an episode of The Muppet Show.

The reactions to the slap have a tendency to fall along generational lines. Older folks seem to find the whole thing ugly or side with Chris while younger peeps find it funny or are siding with Will. Of course, there are exceptions.

Not sure about that? I've mostly seen people making fun of Will with Chris being acknowledged as being a good sport for not taking it personally.

In terms of legality, Smith is very obviously at the fault here.

That said, can't say I feel sympathetic towards Rock either.

And especially cruel since Chris Rock produced a documentary about the complex politics and intense shaming of Black women's hair.

Said documentary has been criticized for apparently mocking black women more than actually sympathizing with them. I've not seen it, so I can't say if the criticisms hold water, but Rock has had a lot of blowback in recent years for being a misogynist and using black women as the butt of jokes. There's a reason he's one of the loudest "cancel culture is killing comedy" morons.

If you gain a right to hit every comedian making fun of you or someone you like in an award ceremony, I guess Ricky Gervais is going to have to take jiu-jitsu lessons, and the MMA should start sponsoring them.

Not a good example. Gervais is a genuinely rotten human being. Smacking him would be like smacking Richard Spencer.

Not sure about that? I've mostly seen people making fun of Will with Chris being acknowledged as being a good sport for not taking it personally.

I've seen the opposite. I've seen people cheering on Smith and calling Rock a misogynist asshole.

Not gonna feel sorry for Chris Rock for getting slapped. He had it coming.

Now, if Chris Rock decided to press charges against Will Smith he'd be in his right to do so. But he still had that slap coming.

Disgusted, but not surprised

I'd love to see a Muppet Oscars.

Also, I just realized that Lin-Manuel Miranda didn't win an EGOT, since he didn't win for best original song. I guess the win for Encanto itself doesn't count. Too bad. I was kind of rooting for him and "Das Orguitas" is a great song.
