The Saga of Darren Shan

A turn-of-the-millenium MG/YA fantasy series, known to some as the Darker and Edgier Harry Potter alternative.

They hold up. These books are great for any age. They're engaging for kids, and they have layers of nuance that adults will find interesting, too. They've been my favorites for over half my life, and I keep coming back to them.

If you've never read them before, I highly recommend that you avoid spoilers. There are some amazing twists, and it's worth it to form an impression of the characters before, and then see how your impression changes after more information is revealed.

... if you were to rank the 5 most important characters, there are at least two of the 5 who are impossible to talk about without spoilers. It's that kind of twisty thing.

I've been looking up reviews and comments, etc., about these books online recently, and one thing that I keep seeing people say is that what makes these books so special is the characters. They're just fun and engaging and enjoyable. Lovable. There's also a lot of humor and enjoyable, cute moments, especially in the first few books when the main character is very young.

There's also an amazing manga adaptation, which apparently has had new editions in North America recently (from Yen Press).

So... did you read these books as a kid? Care to revisit them? If they're completely new to you, would you like to try them?

Who's your favorite character, what's your favorite scene, etc?

My favorite character is the one (not two, one) who you can't talk about without spoiling everything. So there's that.

I made this Idolized Julius Kingsley icon back when Akito first came out, and now that the crossover is actually happening, I don't care.
