What conclusions can we draw from this? It does bother me that so many of these are just potholes, because I think we need to look at how actual examples of this trope are used.
I agree. If this is a trope that is defined by its usage, its usage seems really vague.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yea, it was actually hard to split them up because it really just seems to be used as a synonym for "did not become a couple." Of course, since the current definition doesn't require any context for why the ship existed inthe first place, I can't really say it's misuse to just say "Bob and Sarah getting together sinks the Sarah/Alice ship." It was hard to figure out which examples were actually breaking up canon ships* and which were just fan imagination since the current definition treats them equally
*by canon ships I mean couples actually mentioned or teased or in some way acknowledged in canon, not actual canon romantic couples

Mmm, honestly I could see this being turned into an index for things like Shipping Torpedo, Incompatible Orientation, All Love Is Unrequited, etc.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper Wall^ personally, I'm against it. I think there's a concept here ("ship is specifically shot down") which is separate from the examples you've listed- most of those tropes are reason a ship might not work, not the same thing as sinking an existent ship
at the least I'd like to make an effort to get a clear definition before declaring it unsalvageable
What about the Ember Island Players example? I feel like that's probably the most solid example we've listed here, and I'm not sure what subtrope it fits into

Shipping Torpedo isn't about a ship being shot down, it's about a character disproving of a relationship or potential relationship between some other characters. It's the inverse of Shipper on Deck.
