[up] What conclusions can we draw from this? It does bother me that so many of these are just potholes, because I think we need to look at how actual examples of this trope are used.

The majority of usage being ill-defined potholes is an issue in its own right.

I think the main conclusion we can draw is that "it's used for any time characters don't get together for whatever reason", which, well...isn't a trope by itself.

It's worrying that most examples just seem to be potholes... I feel like we could make a case to send it to TRS on that alone.

I agree. If this is a trope that is defined by its usage, its usage seems really vague.

Yea, it was actually hard to split them up because it really just seems to be used as a synonym for "did not become a couple." Of course, since the current definition doesn't require any context for why the ship existed inthe first place, I can't really say it's misuse to just say "Bob and Sarah getting together sinks the Sarah/Alice ship." It was hard to figure out which examples were actually breaking up canon ships* and which were just fan imagination since the current definition treats them equally

*by canon ships I mean couples actually mentioned or teased or in some way acknowledged in canon, not actual canon romantic couples

Mmm, honestly I could see this being turned into an index for things like Shipping Torpedo, Incompatible Orientation, All Love Is Unrequited, etc.

^ personally, I'm against it. I think there's a concept here ("ship is specifically shot down") which is separate from the examples you've listed- most of those tropes are reason a ship might not work, not the same thing as sinking an existent ship

at the least I'd like to make an effort to get a clear definition before declaring it unsalvageable

What about the Ember Island Players example? I feel like that's probably the most solid example we've listed here, and I'm not sure what subtrope it fits into

[up][up] Shipping Torpedo isn't about a ship being shot down, it's about a character disproving of a relationship or potential relationship between some other characters. It's the inverse of Shipper on Deck.

Eh, yeah, both points are fair.
