Fan Disliked Ending sounds identical to the misuse of Ending Aversion (endings so infamous even non-fans know about them and thus avoid the work).
"Overshadowed By (The) Ending" or similar might be a better fit as it conveys how the ending taints everything to the point most would only know about backlash to said ending than the work itself. Distinct fro Overshadowed by Controversy as OBC is being overshadowed by minor or out-of-work parts of it which the ending isn't.
Besides, Overshadowed By The Ending is such a limiting/narrow name since a work can be well known and discussed enough and still have a terrible ending according to its audience and critics.
I see, I misunderstood the goal of this cleanup was to change the definition to better reflect current use (I see how the correct use would be overly restrictive at too few would have experienced it by definition.) Question:
Here are some fast ways to cleanup Sandbox.Audience Alienating Ending:
I'll be fine with the latter.
For the new YMMV item, I think "Fan-Disliked Finale" has a better ring to it. Though that might also seem to exclude standalone works as "finale" as serialized connotations.

There are enough stand-alone stories that Finale would be overly restrictive.
So are we expanding so it's no longer just endings so infamous non-fans hear about them and avoid the work outright?
No we're making another trope. We aren't expanding Ending Aversion.
I agree, except maybe Tropes Are Flexible would allow entries for other works (not entirely sure).

In that case, I'd say Ending Aversion shouldn't allow examples as they would all be redundant with Fan Disliked Ending (any reviews noting backlash is noting Fan Disliked Ending as opposed to EA) and EA leaves no objective evidence like Audience-Alienating Premise.
Question: how would Fan Disliked Ending avoid being redundant with Fanon Discontinuity? And does the amount of dislike have to be significantly greater than Broken Base?
Hmmm... I can see a point about redundancy. It boils down to "non-fan" vs "fan," really.
As for the questions:
1) Because it's not just endings covered by Fanon Discontinuity.
2) I would say as long as it's a generally significant opinion, so yeah, at least make it a Broken Base.
Forgot the rename was Audience Alienating Ending. That may answer that.
So AAE is separate from Broken Base and Fanon Discontinuity in that the dislike is such even general audiences as opposed to just the fanbase dislike? So if ending backlash reaches mainstream media attention it's definitely this?
About redundancy, Audience Reactions can overlap with or cause other audience reactions. Too Bleak, Stopped Caring can cause Angst Aversion, and Fan-Disliked Explanation can cause Fanon Discontinuity. A character being filled with too much Squick can make them The Scrappy. I don't see "redundancy" being a problem, especially since it'd cut down on misuse of an existing audience reaction.
I'd make the draft for "Fan-Disliked Whatever" myself, but I'm pretty busy with real life right now. There's plenty of examples in Ending Aversion Wick Check that could be used if someone else is interested.
Anymore thoughts on this?
I'd remove the examples separation by reason. No other pages does that, it makes it harder to search through examples by work, and reasons should be in the trope description.
Do we want such as a list of things that can cause it or a list of tropes that can?
Bump. Any objections to re-sorting Sandbox.Audience Alienating Ending by media as opposed to the way the ending is disliked (putting the list of reasons in the description)?
I don't know if I already said this (since I kind of forgot about this thread), but I'm in favor of sorting by medium instead of soft-splitting.
Yeah, soft-splits are just asking for trouble half the time.
Sure, let's sort it by media.
...Well, then. I'll try and sort it out myself if I have time, though this thread can also be useful.
This is mostly just a bump to remind people this thread exists.
Bumping. How is the sorting going?
any updates on the sorting?
is anyone there?
I'm still here, but clearly I don't really have the time to go example-sorting. Feel free to dive in if you want to.
