Are we ready to swap in the description?
Macron's notesI think the description's ready, yes.
Since there were no objections, I updated the description and I’m now in the process of moving everything to Our Sirens Are Different.
As a sidenote, does the trope really belong in the Villains index?
Macron's notesI would say no.
No.
Vi: Well, it's not like we're getting attacked by a giant wasp spider guardian! | Leif: Never combine those words ever again.Ok, I removed it a while ago.
Macron's notesIt seems we still need to finish updating the example list. Unless anyone has objections or further concerns, I can do it tomorrow morning.
Have anyone started on the "Siren's Song" draft? And do we actual examples of that that doesn't overlap wiht other tropes while we're at it?
If we don't have a sponsor, we can just yard it.
Current Project: The TeamAll right, since it seems like that's the last thing that needs doing I updated the example list on the main page to match the sandbox.
Apologies for the double post, but edits don't bump threads.
Since the bulk of the work is done and we all seem to be in agreement over the results, the only thing left to do is clean up the wicks and either replace or delete them as needed. I don't have time right now, but I can get started once I get home from work.
Enthralling Siren has 524 wicks.
"Siren Song" examples to yard
Art
- Hylas and the Nymphs: The painting depicts the naiads as seducing Hylas to his presumed doom.
- Young Hylas with the Water Nymphs: As the original tale dictates, the nymphs all work together to seduce and abduct Hylas, nymphs being known for their desirability.
Comic Books
- Les Compagnons du crépuscule: The sisters are compared to sirens all the way. But the old abbot in the monastery clearly states that the compelling voice, which even makes the monks listen in wonder, belongs to Carmine. Crossed with the Captivity Harmonica trope in her case, as she sings from her tower, where her husband keeps her locked up.
Films — Live-Action
- Mermaid: The rusalka enthralls the apprentice with her beauty and her singing voice, and lures him into the river. She then flips him out of his rowboat and attempts to drown him. The old monk intervenes.
Tabletop Games
- Dark Heresy: Enthralling Siren: The Lady of the Voids in Creatures Anathema, a Slaaneshi daemon breed that resembles several daemonettes haphazardly fused together at the waist. Manifesting itself by possessing starship astropaths, a Lady of the Voids quickly enslaves the crew using a hypnotic warp-song of primal screams and moans. Fortunately, those affected can be cured by simply covering their ears or silencing the song.
- Salvage Hidden Treasures: Enthralling Siren : The Siren Song event stop the player who reveals it to move their ships in any direction for their next turn.
Video Games
- Dragon Age – Deities and Lore
- All Darkspawn hear the Old Gods singing to them. Supposedly, it's the most beautiful song you could hear and after a while makes it impossible to think for yourself. Cutting Darkspawn off from this song has been shown to give them back their sanity and sapience, but it also drives some mad and desperate to hear it again.
- When a Warden starts to hear this, it signals the beginning of The Calling, and the end of their lifespan. According to in-game lore, the song feels like an "intrusion" at first, but becomes gradually louder and more fixed in the mind until the Warden can't live without it, or even remember not hearing it. One journal you find by a long-dead Warden veteran has the Warden's writing constantly digress into gushing its beauty, to the point of resenting being judged for enjoying it in spite of what it represents.
- During a failed attempt to kill one of the Old Gods before it could be corrupted, the Grey Wardens discovered that the song is audible to anyone close enough to their prisons, and incredibly loud.
Other
- Driven to Suicide: The Lemme Fatale enemy in Lemmings Chronicles is an Enthralling Siren who drives Lemmings who get near her to suicide.
- Betrayal Motivation: Angel - numerous wicks
- The Smurfs: Like Odysseus, a captured Marco is enthralled by Marina's signing while tied to the mast of the Pepper Pirates' ship. And like Odysseus' crew, Handy, Brainy and Hefty have their ears covered with cotton so they aren't under Marina's spell.

Down to 400 wicks.
Down to 300.
After reading through the discussion I'm unclear as to why the Wonder Woman examples were removed. The reasoning behind the edit says examples were removed to fit the new trope description but both of were of enemies that were explicitly called sirens in the source material and were quite "different", with one having been forcibly transformed into a tree as punishment in antiquity and the other group being siren androids.
Could you link to the page and put removed examples here?
Not sure what page you want a link to, but both examples as originally written are:
- Wonder Woman:
- Wonder Woman has faced off against sirens and those acting under their sway on multiple occasions. The first time is with Mona Menise in Sensation Comics, who is trouble on her own before she picks up a wooden bangle containing a vengeful siren that had been turned into a tree by Aphrodite in antiquity.
- Wonder Woman (1942): Diana leads a coalition of female heroes to take down a group of android sirens created by Professor Ivo that are attacking the capitol. They only affect men, necessitating the quick gathering of a bunch of super-ladies.
The first one is a ZCE; it says that "sirens exist", but that's not enough context to count for these tropes.
Current Project: The TeamYeah, that one is pretty rubbish as is, how about a rewrite like...
- Sensation Comics: Parthenope is a siren who lured sailors to their deaths with her music in antiquity until Aphrodite turned her into a tree as punishment. The tree was later carved into a bangle through which she could extend her musical powers to the wearer.
That's good.
Did some dewicking, just under 200 now.

Crown Description:
What would be the best way to fix the page?
Because Call a Pegasus a "Hippogriff", is how we can involve Our Sirens Are Different when they're not called Sirens, but have basically everything else.
Like Sirens Are Mermaids, but generalized?
