Cleanup Thread: Character Specific Pages

Go To

Character-Specific Pages (CSPs) are created when individual characters have so many trope examples that they can't reasonably be included on a shared page.

The Administrivia Character-Specific Pages policy details the rules that apply to these pages. All Character-Specific Pages must also follow the basic How to Create a Character Page policy, as well as the wiki's more general policies about spoilers and examples.

This cleanup thread handles the following tasks:

  • Reviewing and approving new CSP proposals. All new potential CSPs must be reviewed and, if necessary, cleaned up before they're created.
  • Agreeing on page names for new CSPs.
  • Ensuring that wicks are updated when a new CSP is created.
  • Reviewing existing CSPs if there's a concern that they need cleanup, or if it's believed that the character may no longer qualify for a page.
  • Merging existing CSPs into other character pages when necessary.
  • Ensuring that wicks are updated when a CSP is removed/merged.
  • Creating, updating and cutting redirects, as necessary, to reflect these splits and merges.

Crowners are not normally required but, where appropriate, can be used to formalise decisions on any of these points.

If a character no longer qualifies for a CSP, it's often more practical to turn the CSP into a redirect than to cut the page entirely. This keeps the page history visible to users, and also helps to steer offsite 'inbound' traffic (search engine results) to the right place. With that in mind, cut requests for CSPs may be declined and referred to this thread if they don't have a clear consensus.

Comments linking back to this thread can be added to CSPs when needed - e.g. to confirm their creation was approved, to warn tropers that a cleanup is in progress, or to note the date and outcome of a more recent review.

We also have some more general threads for character page help - If these issues are spotted for a CSP, they are on-topic here as well — but as they're not the focus of this thread, you might sometimes choose to raise them on one of the others instead.
This is not a policy discussion thread, it's a cleanup thread — any requests for policy changes need to be raised in Wiki Talk.
Mod update 07 Mar 2024, reflecting new CSP policy, updated again 22 Mar 2024 to mention redirects for removed CSPs
    Text of original pinned post
There are several persistent issues with the quality of Character Specific Pages. Now that there are official requirements for creating new pages, this thread can be hub for cleaning up pages with issues or that don't qualify. The requirements settled on are as follows, and its recommended that a page meet two or more to stand on its own:

  1. Other options must have been tried first, like splitting pages into further groups.
  2. The character's folder is cleaned up beforehand, fixing any Zero-Context Examples and Wall of Text entries and removing any outdated, misused, or non-character tropes.
  3. A character's folder is at least 6,000 words/40,000 characters (with spaces). Here is a byte counter.note
  4. The current character page bypasses technical limitations and requires a split up.
  5. A single character takes up the majority of a page or is disproportionately bigger than other folders.

Splitting a character into their own page is a major change and needs to be run by the community before it is enacted. Even if you believe a character meets these requirements, they should be run through this thread first. Having other tropers take a look can help spot issues you may not notice or believe to be issues.

Per How to Create a Character Page, character-specific pages should only include tropes that describe the character. These tropes should fall under Characterization Tropes or one of its related indexes, unless they're recurring character traits (distinctive things that the character does repeatedly). If you're unsure what counts as a character trope, you can ask the Are these Character Tropes? thread.

If you have concerns with a general character page, they have their own separate cleanup thread, as do the self-demonstrating character pages.

It appears that someone has created a page for the Doctor Strange variants out of the blue.

Fucking hell, of course. A bit busy at the moment, can someone else merge it back.

You know looking at it it actually seems like there are enough characters for the page to stay. But that’s just my opinion

On a unrelated note, since Ms marvel will be releasing soon, what does everyone think of merging the westview page with the New Jersey section and creating MCU New Jersey? Also a lot of the pages have Citizen in there. Should it be MCU: Citizens – New Jersey?

How's about we wait until it actually comes out and we have info to work with?

And with the amount of MCU pages out there, frankly at this point I'm gonna say we don't need anymore until pages start slowing down or get the "too long" warning. It's getting kinda ridiculous at this point. I'm for merging the Strange variants back, and if no one else does it in the next few hours while my computer cools down, I'll do it when I come back.

I guess you’ve got a point. I just feel if a page has got a million folders then it’s gotten to long. It makes it easier to navigate.

At what size does the “too long” warning appear on a page? 300,000 bytes?

[up] I forget the specific number, but I think anywhere from 250,000 to 300,000 is when the warning typically pops up.

Also, I announced it on the other thread but I'll say it here - I officially updated Characters.MCU Multiverse to have all the variants on it, so they're all finally in one place. My only real concern besides whether I might have accidentally deleted any information on other pages (so I'd greatly appreciate if someone can double-check my edits to make sure I didn't permanently delete any information) is what to do with Characters. What If 2021. They're now linking to a whole bunch of pages that no longer have the information, so being honest, I'm tempted to make that page a redirect to the multiverse page. If I get consensus for that change, I can do it once my computer cools down.

I don’t know. I’ve only ever seen it on a couple of pages.

Also looking at the United States citizens, does Kid Colt count as a superhero? If so should he be moved to the other superheroes page?

[up][up] I’d say just categorize everyone under multiverse for each episode. Also lm not sure if all the variants sections are needed on the old pages if they are all moved?

Looking at the folder I'm inclined to say no.

[up] A. It feels redundant to just have a bunch of folders all linking to the same page rather than just redirecting it to the page. B. The Variants sections now link them to where the variants are, so at least people looking for the variants on the old pages will know where to go. It's not much different than a cut page being turned into a redirect for an existing one.

Yeah merge the Strange variants back. We decided not to make and at this point we have way to much MCU pages.

Speaking of which, the MCU Shield, MCU Hydra and MCU: The Hand pages don't have any actual character folders on them, just a list of general tropes. Since their branching pages are too complex to merge back into the source, we could probably just cut those three and move any relevant information where it's needed?

I think organizations are fine to have general trope pages, especially when there’s so many other branching pages. If it’s really too much of an issue we could just merge the respective leadership pages into them.

If your looking for pages to merge Klaue’s organization could be merged back to criminal organizations, AIM could be merged into criminal organizations also, and Hammer industries can be merged into companies.

Maybe we need to apply CPS guidelines to general group pages. So no splitting if it creates pages that are too small, and no trying to shoehorn the word count with things like ZCE

After a rather busy day, I've merged the Strange variants back with his main page, so feel free to delete the MCU Doctor Strange Variants page.

So following up on discussion or getting rid of some of the pages, I've done the following:

There are still some pages that I think can be merged.

Other things that could be looked at

  • Ulysses Klaue has enough bytes for a solo page if space is needed.
  • Asgardian Characters could probably be resorted under Deities.
  • Trevor Slattery could be moved to Dimensions under Ta-Lo.

That's possibly it for now. To be honest I'm a little tired so if anyone wants to check my work that would be great.

Should all the redirected pages be cut btw? I'm not sure how big they can be before they can't be cut.

Been a while. Since my last post, I've made character-specific pages for The Flash (DCAU), John Rambo, Howard Hamlin, and Lalo Salamanca

That out of the way, I would like to mention that I've created a sandbox page for Soul Edge and Nightmare. While it's big at around 74,199 bytes (this is a Moniker/Legacy Character we're talking about + there are two timelines to consider) there are also cases where much of the same tropes and the same information is spread throughout each iteration. While I am open to doing some checking, I would also appreciate it if someone else can also play a hand at refining and streamlining the page before a proper character page is made, provided they're familiar with the Soul Series.

Ok so I did the following:

I have fixed all the links for all the moves. The only thing now is that MCU: Citizens – New York City has a too long notice.

Let me know if there are any issues.

Why did you make all these moves without at least asking? I don’t particularly care about some of them but these were a lot of moves to just make without warning. Like, I don’t know why you moved the “allies” people away into generic civilian pages and I would’ve suggested you don’t do that if you had said something, and I also would’ve disagreed with the move for the Punisher. And funnily enough, if the New York page is giving the too long warning, you know who I'd recommend splitting off? The Defenders' allies, cause at least they can be grouped together.

Like dude, this was so many moves all at once to just do them without saying something and that’s not really cool.

Yes, I vastly disagree with moving all the "allies" (and if New York's reaching the limit, then I absolutely advocate for moving those back) and the Punisher, not to mention IGH should probably be under companies instead if merging it is really so important. A little consensus beforehand would have been appreciated.
