So some folks and I were discussing over ATT about what warrants making Character-Specific Pages:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?parent_id=102309&type=att
Something that came up was that there were very few rules on the main page for what qualifies, just that a character makes up "a sizable amount" of a given page. Nothing specific in terms of word or trope count.
Personally I've been creating pages for characters from anywhere between 5500-8000 words (I'm told other people go by bytes but I don't know how to measure those). My general quota has been the character has enough content there that splitting them off would make for a smoother reading experience. After all I'd argue that a folder with tens of thousands of characters might be a bit overwhelming for people browsing the site.
My goals, and the goals of people who recommended this thread, are to:
- Establish clearer guidelines on Character-Specific Pages for what characters qualify for a solo page
- Remerge any pages that wouldn't meet those qualifiers back into their original sheets.
- And above all prioritize a smoother and efficient reading process for visitors and tropers alike
Some ideas suggested already include:
- Characters who reach a certain limit of characters, words, tropes, and or bytes
- Characters with relatively big significance to the work (protagonists, antagonists, anyone with significant depth or plot-relevance).
- Characters that would push the technical capacity of a page.
- Characters who otherwise take up a huge chunk of a combined sheet.
UPDATE: Character-Specific Pages now has official requirements for creating new pages. This cleanup thread can be used as a space for handling or addressing cases that don't qualify.

I typically only make character pages for single characters when it's clear a page on a group is too long (shows a red banner when you try to edit it). the only page I really made was Characters.Persona 4 Yu Narukami to save space on Characters.Persona4the Investigationteam, which is about the main protagonist and now has 54956 bytes in plain text (check in Notepad++), which seems like a pretty good benchmark for length and importance.

I do agree with the suggestion of a 40,000-50,000 byte minimum (based on the above comment and as discussed in ATT). That's roughly a 6000 word article in reader mode

Yeah. 40,000-50,000 sounds about right.
For instance a group page is 50,000 bytes on it's own and a character sheet is over 70,000. I would be fine with making a character page then.

Though I don't think we should be too restrictive. We probably should add some criteria but I think we should approach it more in a way that it has to reach one of them rather than all of them.
Maybe, I guess it depends on the criteria in question.
I feel like you have a point. What would you suggest?
Edited by Bullman on Jul 15th 2021 at 2:16:34 PM
Not to be a buzzkill guys, but this discussion would be much better for Wiki Talk. People who want to discuss the policy wouldn't expect the discussion to be in this forum under this thread name.
Well, maybe we can start by brainstorming said criteria. If anyone has anything to add or change to the suggestions up top I'd be happy to hear.
Well either.
- It has the required amount of bytes on a single character as we already said 40,000.
- The original page is so big that it would justify a split assuming there are no other options.
- The character takes up over a third of the page or maybe half.

Is there a way to move this thread there?
Edited by Bullman on Jul 15th 2021 at 2:18:54 PM
You'd need to holler a mod, though with the current title and OP I'm not sure if this would be able to transfer smoothly. I'm not suggesting this thread move, but the conversation has to.
Someone want holler the mod to move the thread to Wiki Talk? I would but I don't know how.
You know what I will just start a new thread there.

With this idea there might be some cases where a page doesn't have the required amount of bytes but for some other reason a split is necessary.
Agreed, I think more than one requirement is a good start
Should we lock this thread to keep the discussion in one place?
Someone just started making individual character pages in the Street Fighter characters section, and, I'm not exactly sure what the point is.
The characters already have individual collapsible Folders, so it's not like it takes a long time to scroll past them or anything.
It just kinda makes the indexes look more cluttered and harder to navigate. And I don't see the benefit.
Uh, yeah That's me.
Kinda why we're here

Yeah this whole thing started because of of that. Now the question how big are they and how big were the originals.
So here is what was agreed upon by the Wiki Talk thread.
- Character page bypasses technical limit and requires a split up.
- A single character takes up the majority of a page or is disproportionately bigger than other folders.
- Character is cleaned up beforehand, removing any ZCE and outdated/misused tropes.
- Character page is at least 6,000 words/40,000 bytes
- Other options must have been tired first, like splitting pages into further groups
Unsure about these ones currently:
- Dragalia Lost Main Characters Prince Euden
- Dragalia Lost Main Characters Cleo
- Dragalia Lost Main Characters Brunhilda Mym
- Street Fighter Chun Li
Edited by IkeaHan on Jul 16th 2021 at 3:35:25 AM
The Dragalia Lost ones are not even close to long enough to justify being seperated.
How big was Chun-Li's original page? Because as is she is only barely over 29,000.
