Since this got bumped back to the front, I have a particular thought on the movie. The intial part of the movie did feel like it was about Menstruation. That feeling and thought was gone by the 30 minute mark, given alot of what happened later in the movie it felt like a trigger rather than the focus, and came across as more of a dealing with a case of Hereditary Lycanthropy. Like this could take place in the World of Darkness and it would just be a weirdly upbeat and non-grimdark story in the setting. One that wraps itself up so neatly despite breaking the Masquerade, so I guess the Vampires and other Lycanthropes and the like just shrug and ignore them. And now I've gone off topic. But yeah, it felt more like it was about Lycanthropes.

I think the reason for 30 Min mark is that was the amount of room Disney was prepared to give them on the subject, they're talking about a super touchy subject so there's no way they're going to let them have an entire movie dedicated to it

A new music video related to the 4*Town song "1 True Love" is now on Disney+. Seems to explain a little about Tyler's hidden love for the boy band:

I'm kinda of annoyed that people described the cringiness of the movie as a point against it, apperantly forgetting that this movie is about a teenage girl going throw puberty, of course is going to be cringy, that time period of one's life is filled with cringy uncomfortable moments, is not a point against it is a point on it's favour because it shows that it knows and understand the subject they're talking about, when they start complaining about that just seems to tell me they didn't get it.

If anything, the cringe helps the movie a great deal. I wasn't a teenage girl, but I was a nerdy teenager, and looking at Mei and her friends I thought, "yeah, this was pretty much me and my friends". I think we can all relate to this kind of cringe. It's almost nostalgic in a way, to look at these characters and think back to your own adolescence, both the good and the weird.

^exactly that's what I mean but of course a lot of people are on disney hate mode right now and they have to hate anything they put out right now on arrival so they will not care about any of that.

Not like I'm saying that is wrong for anyone not to like someone or anything everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I feel they are helding this opinion not because they felt this way after fairly giving it a chance but because they have a bias against current disney and will automatically dislike any modern disney media.

Even if they like something they feel like they have to complain about what they didn't, a lot of andor reviews, even while positive, still end up devolving into "but the sequel trilogy still sucks and I'll never forgive disney for ruining the franchise forever".

[up] I kind of blame it on how favorable Caustic Critics, and destructive criticism in general, seems to be now. The impression being you can't be "too positive" without coming across as a shill, so you have to be loudly trivial and snarky about irrelevant details about a work.

Ironically, there is a demand for more earnestness out of mordern media because it's often viewed as being too "cynical self-aware" and deconstructive itself. Except works that do that are usually lambasted by the same crowd as being "too cringy".

I love it! The artist did a fantastic job. Really liking Tyler as Mercury and Miriam as Jupiter. But they are all really good.

[up][up][up]I agree. To quote a line from a history book I read a while back, "In ticking off the things that weren't done, it's easy to forget the big thing that was accomplished."

So Turning Red has some flaws. So what? I've never seen a movie that didn't have some flaws. Some of my favorite movies are B-movies; hell, some barely qualify as C-movies. Turning Red has good animation, good music, (mostly) good characters, funny bits, sad bits, scary bits, cringeworthy moments, and a couple of great moments. Put them all together and they add up to a movie that is, for all its problems, still a good story and good fun to watch.
