Finished watching season 1. I think overall I liked it, and I hope we get a season 2.
I'll just start with the stuff I didn't like. Half of the main cast were tolerable at best and irritating at worst. I don't normally enjoy characters whose primary humor comes from being incredibly moronic, so Durpleton just actively annoyed me most of the time. Glendale was... okay most of the time, but she also had a lot of moments of pure idiocy and her repeated kleptomania gag really stopped being funny the first few times. It also didn't help that both of them (and Ched... but I'll get to him in a moment) were largely useless and acted more as The Load than anything else due to being so incompetent. And Ched... oh my god I absolutely hate Ched. I really don't enjoy it when the relationship between two main characters is just one character actively being a jackass for no reason to another character (it's why I always disliked April constantly antagonizing Ann and Gina continually picking on Amy) and that is *all* Ched ever does to Horse. He's just continually actively a dick to her, and the last two episodes try to sell us on him secretly being fond of her this whole time but I found that very hard to buy.
There's a lot of stuff I liked though. Horse is a very compelling main character, and it was a lot of fun to watch her arc as well as her relationship with Wammawink. Speaking of whom, Wammawink was also a highlight. Of all the main centaurs, she was the most fleshed out, and she managed a really nice balance of goofiness and sincerity. Plus her backstory is absolutely heartbreaking! I may not have entirely bought Horse's bond with the rest of the Herd, but I definitely believe Horse's bond with Wammawink, and their relationship is so sweet. A lot of the side characters we meet in each episode were also very interesting. Some of my favorites were Waterbaby (so I was thrilled to see her again in the finale), the Whaletaur, the beartaur, and the Cataurs. The lore is fascinating, and I'm really curious to learn more about the war in Centaurworld as well as the mysterious purple haired woman and whatever her past is with the Nowhere King. Speaking of whom, the Nowhere King is such a chilling villain, with a very creepy Villain Song. He's shaping up to be a very cool antagonist. The songs were largely really good! I really love the repeated use of Rider's song, but other songs I really liked were "Who is She?" (and its reprise), "Fragile Things" (and its reprise), "Hello Rainbow Road", "What If I Forget Your Face," and "Nothing Good." The jokes were pretty hit-and-miss, but I really liked it when the show leaned more into the... I don't know how to describe it, kinda dark humor? Such as the mini-mes screaming from having existential crises upon their creation or the fishtaur almost choking to death when Wammawink is levitating the bog. I also thought Horse's transformation was cool, partially because I think transformation stuff of any kind is interesting, but also because of how we got to see how it affected Horse emotionally and explored the consequences and anxieties she'd get from that. Just in general, when the show gets emotional, it really hits. I found myself getting choked up several times while watching. Additionally, the animation and artstyle of both worlds were absolutely gorgeous.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.Boy this show is something. Like, it's genuinely impressive how well the writers have managed to blend the over-the-top goofiness of Centaurworld with a complex and serious storyline.
It's also very nice to see that the finale is clearly built with the intention of tying into further storylines.
I adore Glendale. She's adorable, in a twitchy, kleptomaniacal sort of way. I'd love to hug her, if that wasn't a ready way to lose my belongings.
Can't say I care much for Ched, though. Dude's just a jackass.
The antagonists are awesome. The nameless ominous whatshername is fascinating — I love how she clearly has a complex backstory and motivations and we only get to see a small glimpse of them. I really look forward to seeing more of it teased out in the future. And the Nowhere King, oh, the Nowhere King is terrifying — just a fantastic, chilling, really well-made foe. Excellent work.
Their songs both slap, too.
There's a lot I'm looking forward to and/or hoping for when the next season comes along:
- One, I'm very interested in seeing what the woman and the Nowhere King's deal is. That's going to be some heavy stuff, I can tell.
- Two, Horse trying to whip the centaurs into an actual viable army promises to be either impressive or hilarious. Knowing the show I expect both.
- Three I would like Horse to get her old body back, given how distressing she found her transformation. However, even if she doesn't, I wonder if Waterbaby's stay in the human world might cause her to start becoming more realistic...
I would also dearly like to see more of the human world and of Rider.
... hmm. You know, it occurs to me that this show is probably very conductive to crossovers. I mean, it's basically a crossover between two different genres of fantasy cartoons, right? A dark and gritty, modern adult fantasy series with war and bad things happening and probably a few major character deaths, and a colorful, happy and cheerful cartoon with goofy creatures, shiny magic, bright landscapes and a shockingly dark villain. You can probably slot in an appropriate cartoon in either slot without a whole lot of trouble — you could pretty readily have, say, Horse wind up stranded in Equestria or the Land of Ooo or have the centaurs receive a visitor from Wallachia or something.

Well, I just finished binging the first season. Gotta say I quite liked it, though I felt the finale was a bit weak. Pacing seemed off.
Good songs throughout. Lot of good variety and expression, especially when the song goes for a different style, like "What You Need"'s folk ballad or "Taurnado" having that creepy choir.
Disappointed that the Nowhere King didn't have more going on musically, since he's voiced by Brian Stokes Mitchell.

I have been thinking for a while on some unifying thing for the 5 shamans we had. Judge Jacket makes it hard to have something to them because of how unusual the Moletaurs are compared to the rest of Centaurworld the show.
I also have been thinking that the Twin Tree Shaman(s) are connected to Maslow's hierarchy of needs based on how they give to the cast what they need at different levels. Durpleton needing self assurance, Ched needing to understand Horse or something, Horse needing to know Wammawink's trauma and Wammawink being denied her herd's return. Horse calling out how they could have provided shelter to the young Wammawink is what really got my mind whirring on this because that's the first thing on the hierarchy of needs yet Wammawink got denied that.
It definitely feels like the supporting cast outside of Wammawink is more collections of jokes than three-dimensional characters. It's probably telling that they chose to cast comedic character actors in those roles as opposed to the Broadway performers they have for Horse and Wammawink and some of the shamans.

Really for this sort of thing none of them have ever really given any indication that they were more than their surface areas. Wammawink is Team Mom because the others are pretty much idiots.

Well the show is out now. Here are some thoughts I have had from the halfway mark.
Should Renee Elise Goldsberry be playing Waterbaby? I know Waterbaby feels Black but she's also the Big Beautiful Woman type so I am just not too sure.
Favorite character My favorite of the cast is Wammawink for being just the right amount of positivity and goofy while also being the one with the most backstory being a survivor of a Minotaur rampage.
Least favorite character Ched is a jerk with a weird hate for Horse. I know that without him everyone would be heaping positivity stuff on Horse but he looks really weird considering he's the most humanoid of the 6 main characters and he hasn't quite done anything to help in trouble and succeeded. He helped kick down the Tree Shaman with Horse but that's not much.
Musical Numbers Most of the songs are fine and do well as there are 3-4 songs per episode but my standouts so far are Centaurworld, Frustration Tears, and the one with the Beartaur as I think it is a serviceable Villain Song. This cast can sing but it feels a bit mediocre instead of highs and lows.
