Regarding the Hallmark example, it may be a good idea to cite the parodies, although I may need a second opinion because I worry it will become a similar problem to the "citing reviewers" thing that I operate the cleanup thread for removing.

TBH, a recurring other issue is that beyond confusing criticism for parody, some of these might confuse fandom jokes with parody. Like, how many of these would be better suited for Memetic Mutation, rather than SPJ? I do also agree that we need context for these, otherwise they're just a list of things that often come off as bashy.

Since I was ninja'd by [up], I'll say that I don't think the key is to reference specific parodies, rather than to just say that "parodies will often...", though that might be considered redundant and crufty.

[up] Citing a few examples couldn't hurt, especially if the joke was present in a mainstream program like South Park or Saturday Night Live.

I also disagree that citing reviewers is a problem in SBIH because examples with no citation at all are harder to verify, and we use different standards for judging SBIH than we do for SPJ. I'd argue that video review shows could count as "parody" but not just any old common criticisms not Played for Laughs.

[down] Ohhh, when I think of reviewer-citing I think of the SBIH thread. I also think citing opinions that aren't your own can help with shoehorns but that's really context-dependent. Here, I think it'd help at least a bit.

[up] I was not referring to SBIH. I was referring to the litany of other examples on the wiki that just say "[X] points out" or something similar. But I see your point. I will withdraw my claim.

Should there be a SPJ on the following:

The only difference between Ren & Stimpy and South Park is Technician Versus Performer, respectively, as both are considered "gross-out" 2D cartoons created by outspoken North American libertarian animators in the 1990s that are primarily on Viacom-owned cable channels in the United States.

I changed the "Show X is ripping off show Y" examples on the western animation page a bit to make it clearer that it's the parodies making the accusations, not the tropers. Are they good now?

[up][up] I have never seen any actual parody, or anybody really, claim that Ren & Stimpy and South Park are basically the same show in any way. They're both game-changing 1990s Gross Out Shows but they are presented in a very different manner and (in)famous for different reasons. And John K's reputation is... well, different than Matt and Trey's nowadays.

That's the reason I want some examples of parodies on these SPJ — most of them I've never personally seen in a parody at all, or even heard about from a fan.

[up][up] The problem isn't us making the accusations. The problem is that "x ripped off y" is not a parody joke, it's a criticism.

If there genuinely ARE people who poke fun of these shows copying a different show in a parodic way, then maybe elaborate a bit more on the kinds of jokes they make if you know what I mean. (For instance, Mad Magazine once made a "Family Guy ripped off The Simpsons" joke by recoloring the Griffin family to look like the Simpsons.)

I’m sorry for contributing to many of these bad examples.

With that, I just want to say I think that the definition of this item isn’t very clear.

Maybe for the fandom jokes, there could be another item for it called “Stock Fandom Jokes”? Or would that be redundant with Memetic Mutation or the like?

South Park is similar to Ren and Stimpy if you look at them with your eyes closed, I guess.

[up][up] That'd be redundant with Memetic Mutation, which was recently expanded to include fandom jokes.

Yeah, we even debated making a separate Stock Fandom Jokes trope on the Memetic Mutation TRS and decided it'd be easier to just expand the definition.

Oh, since when was that exactly? "Recent" isnt helping me here.

So would something like the fandom's obsession No Such Luck belong on there?

I'd also help if Stock Parody Jokes directed people to Memetic Mutation for fandom jokes.

About three weeks ago.

I don't think The Loud House obsession with "No Such Luck" is either a meme or a Stock Parody Joke. I've barely seen that show get parodied at all, much less in an effort to mock the fandom.

Linking to Memetic Mutation seems like a good idea.

Yeah, the memes and jokes still need to be, well...memes and jokes, and a fandom hating a certain episode isn't either of those things.

The "x is furry bait" examples aren't the only ones that are becoming redundant. There's also "x is a metaphor for a coming out story" (which I admittedly started with one of the Hermey examples under Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) and "bald child character is a chemotherapy patient".

I know we normally frown upon "general" examples, but I decided to add a couple of those redundant examples to StockParodyJokes.Tropes in order to keep them from cluttering the page, though we could just as easily do an Analysis page for common recurring parody jokes in different media.

"X is a metaphor for a coming out story" is covered by Rainbow Lens. I've seen plenty of memes or internet comments going "X is furry bait" or "x caused furry awakenings". My question is, are we going to count those as parodies?

[up][up]An analysis page would be great for generic examples such as bald child = young chemo patient.

[up][up] A lot of works get mocked and parodied primarily for being furry bait. It's not really wrong to acknowledge that, even if it's redundant.

Hence another reason I'd like to include more references to specific parodies, as it'd cut down on redundancy by giving each example more originality.

Well my question is, what do we count as parodies? Like would some random meme count? Because I'd argue that most of the examples currently on the page only exist in memes. I can't really think of a sketch on say SNL about how Zootopia is furry bait.

Comics based on memes can be parodies. For example, I'd consider Super Effective to be a parody of Pokemon. I also consider most Mid Review Sketch Shows to be parodies.

This Pokémon entry has bothered me for a while:

  • A Pokémon joke that's popular with the LGBT Fanbase is the classic "Are you a boy or a girl" line being met with the player coming out as trans, or giving an annoyed Mathematician's Answer (since this immersion breaking question is one many transgender people encounter in real life). This was widespread enough that it's likely the reason later games have prompted the player to "choose your style", led to the Pokémon GO team deciding to make Blanche non-binary, and also influenced the heavily Pokémon inspired temtem to give players a more complex choice of pronouns and character designs.

I know this does get made fun of a lot (usually accompanied by a fan-made screenshot of Professor Oak saying it on the Game Boy), but it just feels out-of-place, like the page interrupts itself to talk about gender identity.

[up] Blanche isn't (consistently) non-binary, although that may be caused by quirks of non-English languages. So that part would have to be rewritten even if the example stays.

I don't think this joke was the only reason they made Blanche nonbinary, nor the reason temtem is more inclusive — that's just a matter of social progression. The only part worth mentioning is the change to "choose your style."
