It was clearly a move for brownie points in the modern political climate, DICE made it very clear before the game came out that they were shoehorning modern politics into it. Needless to say, people were NOT happy at all about them rewriting history.

At least The Last Tiger DLC was arguably the best of the bunch, especially since you don’t see many FPS action games give you control of a German Tiger tank crew versus US forces.
And while I understand why DICE decided against a campaign - their last two efforts were lackluster, and the original BF 1942 didn’t even bother with one either - I personally am gonna miss it. Maybe a PvE mode for those who want to take a break from the try-hard Pv P grind, or something similar to how Titanfall 1 did theirs would work?

Despite everything I still have a blast playing BFV with my friends so I will at least try this one.
Not sure if I like the idea behind specialists, it feels odd that they advertise customisability so much but make character loadouts and appearance more restrictive at the same time.
At least the gadgets revealed so far are interesting.
The World of Battlefield 2042: How we got here
To my surprise EA apparently released some backstory information regarding the setting of BF 2042 already. Key amongst it being that most of the mercenaries you'll be playing as in the game consist of a group called the Non-Patriated, or "No-Pats." Basically, they're a horde of nationless people who've lost their homes for a variety of reasons, ranging from war, climate change, collapsing governments, etc and now make a living doing odd jobs for the highest bidder - including being soldiers. It just so happens the United States and Russia happen to be using their services during the course of the game's conflict.
It's the sheer number of displaced peoples that's mind-boggling - OVER 1.2 billion people are now roaming the earth. A group that massive is gonna be using up an unsustainable amount of supplies, especially for a nomadic people. Granted, they probably aren't staying in one spot, but still, that population is bigger than most of Earth's current governments.
Templin Institute goes into a bit more detail, if you're interested.

So the calls about it being a hero shooter a la Overwatch have a kernel of truth to it. You're not actually soldiers of a country, you're guns for hire like Overwatch is (and TF 2 before that). Certainly explains the Specialists nonsense.
Not the end of the world compared to robot arms in WW 2 of BFV, but definitely a ding.

With as many vehicles as there are in that, plus their constant focus, it appears Dice may be attempting an apology tour for the suck of their last couple endeavors among other things.
Though I’ll be honest with that tornado shite. Looks gimmicky as hell, like they learned nothing from Levolution. It’ll probably wear out its welcome very quick.
I'm currently working on filling in the TV Tropes page (had to make a new one after the previous one had a typo in the namespace). Is it safe to say in the page that the main plot is about global warming?

That description also fits BF 2142 since that entry was about a new Ice Age forcing everyone to migrate towards the equator. Global Warming is the cause of the severe weather and a major reason why the Ex-Pats came into existence, granted, but I'm hesitant to say it's the key reason for the conflict.
And while I'd normally say to just wait for more details to emerge, the lack of a campaign in exchange for a multiplayer-only focus means we won't be getting much more beyond that (until at least the season passes or whatever story-related material drops).
I see. I made a story summary based on the pre-release material
we have here. Anyone is free to edit what I wrote.
Forget jumping the shark - this is 1080' rocket-bike jumping over a cybernetic shark with laser-eye-beams levels of crazy!
It's essentially a custom game editor that allows the community create any gamemode or faction setup they want, and even tweak the values of the weaponry (though to what extent is so far unclear). Confirmed for launch so far are the armies and equipment from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3, and of course Battlefield 2042 itself. This will also include 6 remastered maps: El Alamein and Battle of the Bulge from Battlefield 1942, Arica Harbor and Valparaiso from Bad Company 2, and Caspian Border and Noshahr Canals from Battlefield 3.
DICE kinda cheated a bit - BF 3 and Bad Company 2 are both games set in the modern day involving both the Americans and Russians as combatants, so they only need to update the maps and add in any unique gear from the respective games. And I bet the soldiers from the 1942 period will be using character models and equipment that already existed in BFV, meaning aside from the maps DICE again only needs to do some minor visual touch-ups and gear additions.
A pity they didn’t bother with BF 1 either. Seeing the Zeppelins, biplanes, horses, and Mark V tanks in the mix would’ve been awesome.

Reveal trailer for Battlefield 2042 dropped today, seems that they are going for a future war after the last two historical settings
