For what it's worth, this is already listed under Tropes Needing TRS.

The trope suffers from an inconsistent viewpoint which is why it seems to hover between a main trope and ymmv audience reaction. In principle it should be more like Shown Their Work or Artistic License, even straight In-Universe examples where a character is mistaken on a topic. But the focus with a lot of examples is "work had accurate depiction, armchair audience criticizes it for not matching preconceived notions" which is why it has its problems.

It's also odd how Aluminum Christmas Trees is a more specific, narrowly-defined subtrope but is YMMV when the supertrope is not.

What's the deal with Reality Is Unrealistic? This trope is about audience assumptions but it's not listed as YMMV. It also implies in the description that Aluminum Christmas Trees is the opposite of this, but lots of the examples on Reality Is Unrealistic fit under that trope.
