But the time period is clearly established enough that it seems intentional enough.
Exactly; the characters Time Travel to the Present Day.

I managed to dig through more of UPP today. Much of the examples from 1940s works were clearly set during their Present Day, down to being Ripped from the Headlines.

Are we waiting until Nebulous Now and Present Day Period Piece are launched before doing wick cleanup, since the idea is to move at least some of the misuse of Unintentional Period Piece to one of those? Also, has anyone started a draft for Present Day Period Piece? (I haven't, because I lack experience with TLP and feel more confident with sticking to the wiki and forums.)

  1. No, I was starting with on-page examples and was going to move to wicks afterwards.
  2. No, I've just been moving those to Present Day until someone else starts up the draft.

[up]Got it. Moving the Present Day Period Piece examples to Present Day sounds good enough until someone makes a draft for the former.

This entry on YMMV.Destroy All Humans (previously on the trivia section) was added by BattleMaster on September 19th, but I have no idea if it fits.

  • Unintentional Period Piece: Despite being set in The '50s, the game contains a lot of jokes about George W. Bush and the Iraq War, most of which are fairly incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't remember what US politics was like in the year before and after the invasion of Iraq.

For those curious, the game makes two subtle jabs at Bush - One about a soldier wanting to join the Texas Air National Guard because it would be "easy duty", and a scientist saying that 78% of the citizens he brainwashed are now registering Republican (which isn't necessarily a jab at Bush specifically, the game makes a lot of jokes about right-wingers and the red scare in general). Unless a joke about the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy counts, there's not really anything else in the game that takes a jab at that period

The work doesn't apply because the story takes place in an alternate history. Topical references is not sufficient to be UPP.

[up][up] That example might fit Present-Day Past if the barbs were more specifically aimed at the Bush administration, but it seems not.

I was going to add this example to Shredder Orpheus's YMMV page until I saw the trope was up for discussion here. I don't know many specifics about 80s-era Seattle to now myself, but the film is set in a dystopian future so it wouldn't be the present day. Also, a lot of retrospectives on the film mention how the film presents a quieter, more indie Seattle before it became a technology hub. Do you think it would fit as UPP, or another trope?

  • Unintentional Period Piece: The film was made in late-80s Seattle before grunge music and the dot-com bubble caused it to expand, resulting in a picture of a much quieter, more indie Seattle than what would enter popular perception years later.

Does this from the Special Cases page, qualify, even from an edutainment show:

  • Police, Camera, Action! is an interesting example of this; the 1994-2000 series definitely shows itself to be a product of the 1990s, with grainy VHS police video footage and camcorder footage from the U.S. But then the 2000-2002 series shows itself to be from the Turn of the Millennium due to then-new Jai/ProViDa police footage and a preference for sedan cars when nowadays it would be crossover SUVs, and the distinct lack of any social media hashtags that most modern shows would have at the bottom of the screen. The 2007-2008 series doesn't even mention social media. A Continuity Reboot would probably include all these things.

set in a dystopian future so it wouldn't be the present day

Yes, ~Tropers/lalalei2001, that would be misuse for a similar reason [up][up] is; editors mistaking artifacts of the medium (colour fidelity, camera focus depth, and sound quality) as evidence of periodicity. Shredder might qualify for some Failed Future Forecast trope, but it doesn't present quite enough context for me to say that fits.
