Not Tropeworthy: Some Anvils Needto Be Dropped

I've placed almost all of the single-entry YMMV pages on the cut list, mainly because they were almost all misuse anyway (in the "An Aesop that I like" flavor).

The locked pages I haven't looked at; I'll look at those and the individual genre/work pages later. I have a feeling there won't be much left afterwards, if past experience says anything.

I mentioned it a few posts back but I should say it more specifically: we should probably do a short-term project for the subpages we're moving because I doubt all of them even qualify as Anvilicious. Some might not even be An Aesop, as often these are messages people read into the work, not specifically the main intended message(s) of the work.

I'm not against using a Project thread for the subpages, but isn't there already an Anvilicious cleanup thread?

The Ariel Plath entry could be moved to Misaimed Fandom.

During the namespace transferring, one of the subpages was moved to An Aesop (on the work's page). So, that's one less subpage to worry about.

Anyways, counting medium subpages, we have 27 pages to go.

I added this to the TRS Thread Tracker sandbox. I saw that the remaining subtropes of The Con are on there, so I'll probably focus on Real Estate Scam for now, since I already took care of its on-page examples and turned it into a redirect.

I thought I'd mention that the subpages might need to be turned into redirects instead of cut completely, since the cut requests for the old locations of Unintentionally Unwinnable's subpages (which were in the Unwinnable by Mistake namespace) were declined and they were kept as redirects. I couldn't say for sure since it's up to the mods to decide, but I felt it was relevant due to what happened with a different thread.

It looks like all of the wicks have been taken care of, but I don't know if the subpages have all been cleaned up yet.

The problem with that is that, again, not all examples on these pages are Anvilicious, or even intended aesops.

I’ve done some of the pages but it would be a slog even if I weren’t the only person working on this and Uninentionally Unwinnable (as well as moving a work page with a massive number of wicks).

In all honesty, almost all of the examples I’ve seen thus far are just “this is what (I think) the moral is” — almost none of them offer evidence of heavy-handedness beyond a simple assertion that it is, and surprisingly few even offer approval other than what’s implied by the trope name.

I'll jump back into this effort, I'll start clearing out the Metal Gear sub-page and then the video games one.

Okay, both the Metal Gear page and video game page have had their examples moved to cut or moved to another trope like An Aesop and Anvilicious. The Persona and Grand Theft Auto sub-pages are still there if anyone wants to take them. I'll move to cleaning up the Comic Book sub-page and then the Other Media sub-page.

Don't blank pages after cleaning their examples. The proper way to get pages cut is to add them to the Cut List, but for now I turned SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Metal Gear and SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Video Games into redirects to Anvilicious.Video Games in case the mods think the inbounds are too high for them to be cut.

Edit: Also, I saw that we have both SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Film and SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Live Action Films, and neither is a redirect.

Thanks for the advise, it's been a minute since I had to cut a big page like this.

I used a program (more specifically, a GUI for diff) to compare the text of SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Live Action Films and SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Film (I copied their sources into text files and opened said files in the program) and it turns out that they're nearly identical.

I turned SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Live Action Films into a redirect to Anvilicious.Film because the only major difference between the former page and SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Film was that the page simply called Film has an entry for Fargo and the page called Live-Action Films doesn't, so the Film subpage (without "Live-Action") appeared to be the more up-to-date of the two.

The only other differences were some wording tweaks here and there.

If an example just says what the moral is, is that enough context to list it on a works page under An Aesop? I assume the answer is no, but as I've gone back to the Aesop sub-pages for cross-wicking, I've seen a lot of examples that are just the moral itself and no further context. I'm second-guessing myself, and its relevant since there are a few examples like that on the remaining Anvils sub-pages.

If it lists the moral without saying how it's presented in the work, I'm inclined to say it's a Zero-Context Example and is probably safe to just delete.

About the remaining SANTBD pages. Do we have to go through them to see if anything can be moved to Anvilicious or other pages?

When I proposed cutting SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic after going through it and deeming all misuse, this thread argued against. Should I have brought the entire contents to a folder on this threat for us to judge any keepers first? Or were we not at that point in cleanup yet?

Yes, we still need to go through the subpages and move examples to more applicable tropes or Audience Reactions, and delete any examples that don't fit anything. The subpages are actually the reason why this thread is still open, since the wicks have already been taken care of.

Yeah, this is where we’re at.

Looking at that page, I got to agree that pretty much every entry under there lacks any relevant context except for “The Ending of the End,” which can be moved to An Aesop without much change. The others all seem to talking about legit examples of An Aesop, but without any details on how the episodes deliver their message, I’m not sure they should be moved.

I finished moving the Western Animation and Web Animation examples, Theater is next up.

EDIT: Finished Theater up quicker then I thought, I'll move on to Literature, then The Simpsons sub-page.

I recently finished up redirecting the Literature and Simpsons sub-pages. I'll make my way through the rest, but I'll probably take my time.

Anything else need to be done with this one?
