A peaceful boatman once known as the Black Samurai is pulled back into conflict when he takes a little girl with mysterious powers under his wing.

Looks clean.

Would have liked to have the voice of the guy who did Yasuke in Nioh do the role (for the Actor Allusion), but the current guy sounds great too.

Really good premise, and Yasuke remains a fascinating figure (It is a bloody shame that Chadwick Boseman passed away before he could do the Yasuke film he wanted to do) but Le Sean Thomas raises immediate red flags.

Le Sean Thomas is just producing, not directing.

[up] Nothing wrong to my knowledge? Some people might be wary because his last Netflix production, Cannon Busters, was So Okay, It's Average, but Thomas isn't in the director seat for this series.

I believe he scammed a bunch of people who supported the Cannon Busters Kickstarter by not giving the rewards for the very high backers.

Watched the first three episodes. So far, all I can say is that I really, really wish they'd decide what kinda setting they were going for. Science-fiction or supernatural historical fiction, just pick one.

[up]I feel like this is the same issue that plagued Cannon Busters where Thomas tries to cram so much into such a limited timeframe it comes off as disjointed, and in the case of that show, like a Cliché Storm.

I enjoyed Cannon Busters for what it was (easy pop-corn entertainment with a friend), and it made a much better effort to integrate it's diverse inspirations into a single setting. Here, it all just feels so disjointed. I just don't get what they're going for here.

It doesn't need the giant robots at all, it seems.

EDIT: Finished the whole of it. Second half is quite better, as the sci-fi stuff takes a backseat to the supernatural, but still not great. Many of the emotional beats they're going for fall entirely flat due to lack of development of the characters involved, making them feel undeserved. Which, you know, makes sense since we only got six episodes, but that just means they shouldn't have gone for it.

Lots of ambition, not enough time to realise it, with some ideas making it past the cutting room that probably shouldn't have.

I watched the first three episodes. Really love the Quirky Miniboss Squad. They're like a tabletop role-playing group.

Animation is smooth as hell. Fight scenes are awesome. Giant robots because why not. Badass and Child Duo is always cute.

And as a fanboy for Oda Nobunaga I'm always interested in how he'll be portrayed in a medium not actually made in Japan.

Well, let's be honest: It's good to see Yasuke being the hero here, rather than being another of Nobunaga's followers, with all the Unfortunate Implications that would bring, considering how he is normally depicted.

Well, as far as I know Yasuke's only been widely recognized in Sengoku Jidai in the last couple years which nicely lines up with Japan's recent re-evaluation of Nobunaga from "Monstrous, Bloodthirsty Tyrant" to "Ruthless and Flawed but Progressive and Cunning Ruler" in popular culture.

The man's existence also runs into some interesting Values Dissonance. In the west, Yasuke being dedicated to his lord like that might remind some of the Happiness in Slavery narrative that a lot of slave owners and modern racists try to push. In Japan, showing true loyalty to one's lord is a sign of absolute badassery and virtue. And Yasuke was definitely loyal.

I remember when I first heard of Yasuke I thought he was an interesting footnote, a bodyguard to some feudal lord. When I learned later that the daimyo he served was Oda freaking Nobunaga my world was kind of turned upside down. The anime definitely runs with portraying Nobunaga's recruitment of Yasuke as a sign of his "Get with the times, Nippon!" attitude.

You are not alone.

[up][up][up]Uh depends. A lot of modern depictions of Oda is of an Anti-Villain / Anti-Hero type. Japan has mostly moved away from portraying h in as pure evil.

The first time I've seen Yasuke in modern times was in Nioh (Alongisde William Adams in that game).

I'm most familiar with his Fate/Grand Order interpretation, which I know isn't the most...accurate.
