Defiance, the MMO that served as half of the transmedia experience called Defiance, will be going offline on April 29, 2021. This applies to both the first version of the game (referred to as D2013) and it's next generation version, Defiance 2050. For those who haven't tried the game, or those who used to play and then went away, the game is free to play. You still have a few weeks to explore the Bay in the post-Pale Wars world before the lights go dark.

Didn't even know this was still online.

Never bothered to try it, not a fan of MMOs, but the show was pretty good.

Primis, it's not a bad. It's an MMO shooter that ties into the show. With the story is set up, essentially there's a lot of crossover. For example, Irisa and Nolan are on the New Freedom (a stratocarrier) that crashes in the Bay, with them eventually leaving and, one week later, the events of the show begins. There is an episode based mission that occurs while you're playing the main storyline, and you essentially help them get the crystal that Nolan uses to activate the terraspire to get the terrasphere that is later used during the Volge attack on the town. In a later episode of the show, when the town is dealing with a plague, Yewll mentions contacting an old colleague out west to help send anti-virals. For the episode mission for that one, the old colleague is Eren Niden (another Indogene whom you do a few escort missions with) and you help secure the missile that she uses to send the cure to Defiance, which Nolan picks up mid-episode. Even characters crossover and back a few times, including Rynn (one of the Irathiants who first is seen in the show) and Stahma Tarr (who comes out to the Bay to handle some of the family business while Datak is imprisoned). It's a shame the show didn't last longer and the developers of the game didn't try to continue on the story after the show's completion (the developers stated that they couldn't do much of new storylines because they were limited by the show, but they did nothing with it after the show stopped).

Good God, that show ended six years ago. Did the game really have enough of a playerbase to keep going?

Yes, it did. Though the professional reviews of the game were mixed, a lot of fans of the game enjoyed it's fast-action sci-fi shoot'em'up arcade style gameplay, including some enjoying the crossover content with the show. The only drawback was Gamigo getting it's hooks into Trion Worlds and then preceding with their normal "business practice." Defiance and it's "next-gen" version, which is just a slightly modified version of the original Defiance 2050 are two of four games from Trion Worlds that Gamigo are pretty much ending due to killing them with their business practices, with several other games they've got in their clutches heading in the same direction.

This video pretty much shows Gamigo's standard business practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPZkfYWp9uo

At least I and several others have unlocked the game assets to possibly be used for mods for other games. May not be Defiance, but it's better than nothing.

Also, you never know, there could be an emulator for the game eventually. I mean, if it can be done with The Matrix Online, it could be done with Defiance.

So, I'm going to share some updates from since the last time I posted on this topic. I figured, best to keep everyone up to the date.

So far, one user has begun to work on recreating the game world using the game data with the intention to either bring it into Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or GTAV (he isn't fully familiar with GTAV, but is familiar with GTA:SA). Another user has imported two of the character models from the game into GTA:SA (Cooper and Nolan). Another user and a friend of his has started to import weapons into Payday 2 (the first weapon he has up and completed is the Mass Blaster. It comes available with the four skins available for it from the game, sounds, as well as the four different ammo types as well. You can check it out here (along with video footage of the imported weapon: https://modworkshop.net/mod/32287

Another user I know is organizing the assets and planning on having recreations of his friend's Ark Hunters to be used as playable characters in XCOM 2. I myself have imported a couple of the models of vehicles into Second Life, discovered that the color setup uses a possible Vertex Color system to allow for various colors for the vehicles in the game without having to rendering individual textures for each one, and I have been toying around possibly making a Defiance Tribute Sim in SL to talk about the game and show, their development, the lore behind it and their eventually demise (using the game's assets to help create a bit of a "museum"), though not 100% sure on that yet. I have also considered maybe porting the game models and textures into Lionhead Studios' The Movies or maybe even The Sims 3 (I know, they're older games, but I happen to be interested in machinima and am familiar with those two games).

Finally, I heard a rumor that I have no been able to confirm and can't decide if I should share it, concerned about getting people's hopes up only to discover that it was not true. I hate the idea of giving people false hope, but I don't know what to do.

But as I mentioned before, one way or another, a part of Defiance is continuing to exist. And it's better than no Defiance at all.

It's been two years since the game's closure, and this past April was the ten year anniversary of the show and game's release. So, there are some updates I can provide:

The game world has become accessible once again thanks to the efforts of two users. It's one step closer to possibly resurrecting the game fully. For now, users can run around the the game world and explore it without any risk of running into NPCs and such.

Here's a video from one of the people working on the project (and I have also tested this out myself. Pretty fun wandering around the game world and checking out things once more): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVnn5IgrVFk

I sure wasn't expecting to necro this thread - apparently, an indie studio and publisher Fawkes Games has licensed Defiance to bring the game back on PC in April.

Not sure what's the publisher's angle for bringing back the MMO. Are they planning on bringing it back for free, like a fan-run server, or will people be paying for the service?

And furthermore, why are two of the other games advertised on their website basically those cheapo mobile P 2 W games?

I have no idea about that myself, I also found that terribly unimpressive, but I saw no true indication about it being some sort of scam so I figured I could post about it anyway. Guess the release will out it for whatever it is.
