Wow, Ultra Balls are still barely above a x2 multiplier? They feel so much better then I'm used to. As long as you get the Pokemon into red health, Ultra Balls very rarely fail for me.

It's not the balls that are better; across the board Pokémon are much more likely to get caught. The whole formula was overhauled into one more in favor of the player.

Ultra Balls are a 2x multiplier in the majority of games. They got buffed.

Then again, Quick Balls will outright catch anything with a catch rate of 90 or above if used in the first turn (and only those with less than 45 are more likely to break out than to stay in), so there is not much reason to use Ultra Balls in other games.

I kinda wish we got some kinda Net Ball to make water captures easier. I dunno, treat them as somewhat Ao E compared to the others. Oooor bring back fishing, that'd be less annoying than what's in this.

Been listening to the OST through youtube videos. I don't know that the game's soundtrack had to go as hard as it does, but I'm appreciative of it. I would say the majority of it is fantastic. At the very least, every area has at least one super great track.

Regardless of the games, Pokemon music is arguably more reliably good than the Pokemon designs.

The legend has returned.

[up][up][up]I think it was a good move to cut down on the number of ball types, considering that they cost either crafting materials or money, both of which are just barely enough as it is most of the time.

The heavier balls carried my run in a lot of places, since I was often trying to catch Alphas while fairly low rank and level. They're great in battle, since you ignore throw distance there, and I rarely had more issues ninjaing in behind to nail unsuspecting targets than if I were trying to do it further back with the regular balls. Then again, I made extensive use of berry bait, where they basically ignore you entirely as long as they've noticed it and are intent on eating it.

[up]Using cakes of their favourite flavor note  instead of berries gives the biggest boost to the catch rate, equal to catching them sleeping. Favourite Cake + Gigaton Ball + Backstrike has never failed that I can remember. Though sometimes I need Stealth Spray and/or Smoke Bombs to get close enough.

Yeah, that probably would've helped if I didn't have 0 Research Points on them going into catching them most of the time. I could probably use cakes now, though it'd likely only be worth it for Alphas that can get me 4 more points for catching them. Otherwise, I'm at a point in my Dex career where it's easier to farm that stuff out by getting into the grass/smoke (or just running straight in, if non-hostile) near and outbreak and just hurling Ultras/Gigatons without care for what side I hit. The 10-point threshold has kinda gone from a neat novelty to a chore in that way. Still, beats the level of chain catch grinding I ended up doing in Let's Go.

I really don't find catching multiples to be that engaging.

Generally the same for me if it's done in battle, since the "catch at low HP" mechanic is so jank. This is the damned frontier, where I should be able to just catch a fainted Mon and call it a day. Stealth (or "stealth", as my running in tactic ends up being, since it mostly counts on my targets being really obtuse) is more interesting because of the possible set ups with a couple items to nab something like 8 copies at once. Still, the most interesting stuff is that actual research-y stuff like observing it do certain moves or whatever. I just wish those were worth more points because it kind of kills the novelty to have to hope either the enemy AI RNG uses the move a lot, or have to put one in the party to grind through a bunch of fights (that are likely bullying of low-level Bidoofs/etc. to keep it efficient).

EDIT: Y'know, since the series likes to put so much emphasis on having formed deep bonds with your partner Pokemon, I'd like to see future games put less emphasis on "fire and forget" catching. Like, make it so that you earn extra points toward the Dex by either:

  • Engaging in observation tasks while having 0 of that Mon caught ever
  • Engaging in the combat tasks while having significantly deep bonds with the Mons fielded

I think the idea is that a fainted Pokemon instinctively triggers its shrinking ability and becomes too small to target with a Pokeball.

From what I hear, that was what one book back in the Gen 4 games was supposed to say Pokemon do while recovering from harm, but it got mistranslated as something like 'curling up', probably because the translators didn't know that Pokemon shrinking is an innate ability rather than a property of Pokeballs.

So, if Pokemon being able to shrink is something they do themselves, what about those captured mons who have accessories on them (like hats and collars and even little clothes and shit)?

Does that mean they can shrink anything attached to their bodies as well?

[up][up] That's a really strange instinct. Sounds like a great way to get accidentally stepped on and squashed.

I mean, curling up is an excellent way to make yourself a smaller target and protect squishy things like eyes. Maybe it's something like that.

And if you're fighting in tall grass, then it's really easy to hide or get away after the battle. Which actually helps explain why you can't catch fainted Pokémon. They're too small for you to find, now that they've blended into the grass/water/sand/etc.

Sure, but if you're too small, then boots are always super effective to the lethal degree.

If a Pokémon dies via accidental squish while in that shrunken state, does the corpse stay that size, or does the trainer get thrown off their feet by the dead body of a Nidoking?

[up] Oh, god, I've started us down a dark rabbit hole, haven't I?

Is the whole shrinking thing retroactive lore? It's been ages since I played Red/Blue, so I don't remember much of what was even in them, and I don't recall anything of the sort coming up in Let's Go. Arceus bringing is up so casually kind of caught me off guard.

We had this huge discussion several pages back where we realized that a lot of older JP side material from around Red and Green (strategy guides, some of the manga, etc.) mentioned this fact. So it's a fun case of everyone thinking something was Early-Installment Weirdness when it actually remained canon this entire time.

Just to clear, is fainting basically the same across languages? Based on the discussion my thought would be that being unconscious means they won’t shrink.

Fainting status is called 瀕死 hinshi in Japanese, which means "near death" or "in critical condition". So it technically says nothing about whether the Pokemon is conscious or not, just that they're injured too badly to continue fighting.

[up] I suppose "fainting" is more kid-friendly than "critical condition".
