It is time to open the game!
It's a bright and sunny day in beautiful Buenos Aires. A large group of wannabe professional duelists have arrived at Buenos Aires Institute of Technology's Games Development Campus, some having earned the coveted scholarship. All manner of people are here from all walks of life, though the more observant members of the audience will notice how the majority of people here seem to belong to the upper class.
Balloons and streamers decorate the surrounding buildings and a podium with a mic has been set up on the top steps of the campus administration building. The crowd is anxiously waiting for the grand opening and orientation to begin.
Some, however, have grown a little impatient and have started to establish a pecking order, challenging others to duels in order to flex their admittedly still developing skills.
You find yourselves in this crowd. What you do is up to you. Socialize, challenge others who look weaker than you, curl up in a corner and talk to no one, it's your choice.
Welcome to South Academy. The future starts here.
Among the crowd, a young woman is...doing stretches?
“One, two...one two...”
Yes indeed, none other than the daughter of pro Duelist “Hazy” Lane Thorne, Ignia continues to warm herself up in earnest.
Or rather, psyche herself up.
“Ok, Igs, you can do this...new school, new you, new...duels? Yeah! You got this, you got this so hard”
She takes a deep breath, reaches her out her arms, stretches over her head...
And promptly squats down and hugs her knees.
“Hyaaaaaaa-, can I really pull this off?!”
A young man, a teenager of sorts, is looking at the various duels, seeing exactly what it's like here. "Hmm.. that's a new card..." He smiles, having his duel disc at the ready. "I wonder what I can also learn here. This should be a very interesting semester."
Standing stiffly kind of off to one side is a guy who looks intensely like what you would assume an insufferable rich kid looks like. He's got his duel disk in his bag and is leafing through a deck while muttering to himself.
"Egh, really hope they don't have mandatory first-day duels..."
The young woman Alejandra checked her watch again for what must have been the tenth time in as many seconds. Still, the red seconds hand ticked ever so slowly by on the watch, and she glanced back up at the empty podium. "How long are they planning on making us wait?" She muttered under her breath. "Jeez!"
"Oh well," she said, shrugging and pulling out a book. Flipping it open, her eyes started to flick across the page. "At least I can get some reading in before the semester starts."
Tyler idle shuffled her deck as she watched one of the duels taken place. She was giddy with the amount of new decks and ideas being shown off. She quickly adjust her cap as her head switch form one duel to another.
“All kinda decks and skill levels here.” , she muttered.

Whatever the students were doing or thinking about they would be interrupted by a whistling noise. A series of fireworks climbed through the air high above the campus, leaving behind white smoke trails until they exploded in massive, smokey displays of pink, green and blue. All along the edge of the courtyard confetti was sent up from launchers and a marching band started playing a celebratory tune.
A group of people made their way across the front of the administration building. The front of the train was a tanned, portly man in a bulging cream suit. The few hairs that were on his head were slicked back, he sported a massive handlebar mustache that would have made Hulk Hogan blush, on his eyes were a massive pair of sunglasses with gold frames, and on his left hand were three thick golden rings. The locals would instantly recognize him as Mayor Salvadore Santiago III.
He stood behind the podium, flashed a massive toothy grin then put his hands up in the air and started delivering his speech.
"WELCOME ONE AND ALL To THE GRAND OPENING OF OUR BRAND NEW CAMPUS!" On queue, balloons were released into the air and the telltale rainbow glow of solid vision hologram projectors momentarily flickered throughout the courtyard as massive holograms of a variety of duel monsters appeared above those gathered. Just above the podium a Blue Eyes White Dragon perched onto the roof of the administration building, one of its tails coiling around one of the building's Grecian pillars as it opened its mouth and let out a massive roar into the sky.
Tyler was taken a back by the Blue Eyes hologram. Her dad told her the techies and artists behind the holograms were making really leaps forward. She glance down at the cards she nervously shuffled, agains she wonder want her card would look like live. She hoped the first years would get a chance to duel regularly. Her goal was simple. But it wasn’t easy. She had to learn as much as she could. And if possible make top ten rookies.

With a little impressed 'huh' the blonde kid wandered over towards the nearest hologram.
"Looks like this place sprang for a lot of holoduel tech haven't they?"
He let off another 'huh' and shrugged.
"Whatever, I guess that means duels will be entertaining to watch at least. Don't want to end up bored..."
Ernie looks at the hologram machine. "This is... different. Then again, if that means I can show off my cool monsters...~" He soon enough smiles, turning into a bit of a happy grin. "I can't wait to try this out."
The sudden appearance of Blue-Eyes causes Iggy to squeak and fall back into her behind, where she sits and stares with starry eyed wonderment.
A certain sense of giddiness wells up within her from her place in the grass.
“With tech like this...you could really ‘wow the crowd’...right Uncle M?” She asks, to nobody in particular.
So there he was, Thomas sighed.
In Buenos Aires, at the prestigious institute he'd been invited to on a scholarship, amongst a crowd of other young adults like him who had all come there for- he imagined- a similar reason.
A lot of rich kids, it seemed, though at least he was not alone in not belonging to that category. It's to be expected, though. That was a very prestigious institute. It made sense that the upper echelons of society would all want their progeny to be there. Oh well. It was all the same to him anyway. He was there, though it did seem like he was still feeling down, and he was gonna make the most of it. He briefly wondered if they might be here. For all he knew, they could be- but he barely had time to ponder on that before a whistle rang out, loud enough to catch everyone's attention for sure.
Perhaps even a bit too loud, Thomas would have remarked.
Next, fireworks shot up in the sky, confetti burst out of launchers, and a marching band started playing.
The young adult was sort of caught by surprise. Was this really that big of a deal...? He shrugged and munched on the lollypop in his mouth; this one was strawberry-flavored, he'd picked it up just before coming there, so it was almost finished. The specifics of Thomas' snack habits aside, he looked up at the podium, where a man he did recognize as the Mayor began giving his speech.
For the most part, it was stuff he had likely finished learning by heart the night before; but when it all was done, a rather spectacular- he had to admit- demonstration took place. Balloons and rainbows were almost par of the course for this sort of events.
A massive dragon on the roof of the administration building, less so.
That sure was a way to make a first impression, huh? He smirked to whoever it was that was nearest to him, and commented.
"Well, this looks hella fancy, huh. Wonder how much effort it took them to build up this whole show."
If he weren't wearing sunglasses people would have been able to see the dollar signs in Mayor Santiago's. The man had a lot of skin in the game, and the success of this school could make or break his re-election campaign.
"AND NOW I WILL PASS IT ONTO MY DEAR BABY BROTHER AND THE NEWLY ELECTED DEAN OF THIS BRAND NEW ACADEMY, DEAN MATEO SANTIAGO!" The Mayor waited for the applause to die down before he stepped aside and let his younger brother take the stand. It was not readily apparent that they were related, let along brothers. Dean Mateo Santiago was a striking figure, taller and much more fit than his older brother. His head was clean shaven and waxed to a mirror-like shine. His suit was smart and well creased, he wore a pair of black Ray Bans and the only piece of jewelry on him was a single gold stud in his left ear.
He cleared his throat and addressed the audience. "Thank you. Here at Buenos Aires Dueling Academy our mission statement is 'The future starts here'. Our goal is to make this place the greatest dueling academy in the world. On these campus grounds you will find the most state-of-the-art dueling equipment and within the walls of your classrooms you will be taught by the best of the best when it comes to dueling. As demand for professional dueling increases, we at Buenos Aires Dueling Academy want to supply that demand. We have already been described in the media as the 'South Academy' so as you can see before day 1 of classes we have already claimed dominance over the southern hemisphere. We look forward to coming months as you all become molded into top tier pro duelists. Thank you."
Unceremoniously, Dean Santiago stepped down with little fanfare and joined his brother who was holding a massive pair of golden novelty scissors he grinned and waved to the media, who were taking pictures nearby. The Mayor eagerly cut the red ribbon that was wrapped between the pillars and on queue the band started up again, signifying that the school was officially open.
Next a tall woman with pale skin took to the podium. She was smartly dressed in a pinstripe suit and a pair of thin glasses were balanced on the edge of her nose.
"Greetings, I am Vice Dean Bathery. I am here to officiate the first official duel of the school year as well as this school's history." As she spoke, a large holographic display appeared behind her; a pair of green rectangles. "We are now going to select at random two students who will face off in the ceremonial opening duel." Pictures of students began scrolling down through the rectangles like a slot machine. The first rectangle stopped at a young man wearing a knit wool sweater and a salt 'n pepper cap. The second rectangle kept scrolling...
Drake wearily waited through the pomp and circumstance of this little opening ceremony with what was shaping up to be a trademark disinterested boredom. Until the part where the first duel of the academy would be between those decided upon by random luck; that got him to freeze stock still and start low-key wishing under his breath: let this be anyone but himself.
Ignia stands, dusting the grass of the back of her capris.
Everyone here seems...really strong.
She gulps, watching the rectangle scroll.
“A-An opening duel, huh? H...hehe. Wonder who’s the lucky duelist, huh?” She says candidly, not exactly addressing anyone in particular, just those close by.
Oh god please not me please not me please not me-!
Alejandra gritted her teeth in frustration as she heard the piercing whistle interrupt her thoughts and her reading. With a snap, she shut the book closed, tucking it swiftly away in her bag. She glanced up at the man at the podium, and instantly, she cringed. Golden frames. If someone is wearing golden frames, they're a jerk. Simple rule of thumb. Sure, Alejandra was wearing jewelry of her own, but she had standards. And once a certain point of flashiness was passed, wearing jewelry and gold was less about looking classy and more about forcibly reminding everyone else you were wealthy by being an affront to their eyes. She kept watching, but her thoughts strayed to her book again. She only snapped out of it when she heard about the duel.
A duel? On the first day? In front of the whole school? She sure hoped that wasn't her.
Ernie looks up in anticipation. Is it time for his first duel here? He keeps that large smile, quite ready. "Even if I don't duel, it'll be great to see it in action~"

The scrolling began to slow down. Ignia and Alejandra would see their pictures scroll by. The scrolling slowed down a little more, passed Alejandra's picture. Ernie's picture enters the frame and slooowly scrolls past before it finally stops on...
"SEAMUS DECKER VS. DRAKE BRECHAM!" Bethory announced. Suddenly both Seamus and Drake were projected onto a massive holographic screen above the administration building.
"While the ceremonial opening duel is ongoing we encourage you all to familiarize yourselves with the campus, maybe ever challenge a duelist or two. The ceremonial duel will be projected all throughout the campus for everyone to see! This duel will also be broadcasted on national and international airways. How exciting!"
The young man in the wool sweater, Seamus, had already taken position on the far end of courtyard as organizers and volunteers shepherded the crowd back in order to give the duelist room. All eyes were on the courtyard as Seamus was standing there, eagerly shuffling his deck and waiting for Drake to come out of the crowd.
Iggy let’s put a long sigh of relief. “Thank goodness...”
She puts a little distance between the edge of the crowd, then takes out her deck, cards in a simple gold colored sleeves.
“I know I shouldn’t be ashamed of this deck but...” she mumbles, idly cutting and riffle shuffling the deck, “but...first impressions and all...ahah...”
However, as fate would have it, the edges of the sleeves stop each other so perfectly that it distracts the girl briefly...
Which then causes her to misjudge her footing...
Which ends with her cards scattering onto the sidewalk, and the girl herself face down.
Ernie, seeing this, rushes over. "Are you okay, miss?" He focuses mainly on helping her up first, since the deck is just a physical thing. Besides, what would happen if she was hurt? That's a lot worse than losing a card or two. Material things can be replaced, after all.
It took a lot of outright, ingrained effort for Drake to not audibly swear as his appearance rolled up onto the board. Internally he had no such restraints but for now he had to keep up appearances. This was going to suck, but he wasn't about to straight off shirk it.
"Well then, appears it I— it appears I have been chosen for this inaugural duel then. As master of the house, I will bring my attendants to bring forth the glory of my ancestral estate!"
About halfway through that spiel he was just kind of trying to string words together into a viable sentence as he stepped up to towards the stage. He was trying as best as he could to hide the total and utter panic he was falling into.
Ah...what’d I just say about first impressions? And in front of a guy too...bweeeeeh...
Iggy pushes herself up, dusts herself off, and shakes her hair out.
“...’m fine. Just lost my footing, is a-”
A beat passes.
“Ah! My cards!”
She quickly starts to scramble and pick up her scattered deck.
Ernie works on trying to help Iggy out by getting any cards he can and hands them to her. "Here you go. At least it wasn't windy out." He nods and smiles.
“Eheh...yeah, I suppose.”
She accepts Ernie’s stack of cards, among them Toy Knight and Urgent Schedule.
“Thank you.” She says, nodding her head.
