Rab-In ZI 8

Sometimes it was fun to see people's reaction to something new to reawaken your own love for it. Lux's amazement at the Store was infectious, and Rab found himself grinning in return. "Yeah, this place can be really astonishing." He paused, considering where to direct the ebullient giant. Rab started checking stores off on his fingers. "Hmm....Varcolac? Maybe. Polly's Shop? No, she doesn't like me." He shuddered, then brightened. "Ah-Threadly! You just want regular clothing, right? Nothing for missions or hero-ing? Then that's our destination. They like a challenge, anyway." He cast another glance at Lux, then nodded. "Yes. Come on."

Walking across the plaza, he dodged folks handing out leaflets and coupons, some gently and others with disdain. One wizened figure in a heavy green cloak he avoided with active disgust, muttering something about "crazy old witches." Checking to see if he was being followed by his friends, Rab soon arrived at a certain tube marked with colorful ribbons of fabric. "Here we go. All places that sell clothing for...unconventional customers with non-combat intentions. You wouldn't think there needs to be such a careful demarcation, but they're very particular about who sells what and where around here." Rab shrugged. he bowed and grinned again, gesturing to the tube. "Please keep your hands and feet inside the tube and I hope you didn't have a big meal. The first time can be a little..disorienting. That's why all the food places are on this floor."

Mara Springwood

Mara shook off the rough landing with ease, pumping a fist in the air at the headrush the trip had given her. After a moment of giddy laughter, Mara finally picked herself up from where she'd landed and took a proper look around.

What she saw had her completely and utterly gobsmacked. The city, which had already looked alien and unreal to Mara, was rendered totally incomprehensible by the shift in perspective. She took a step forward, taking care not to leave the zone of safety Izzy had created. Her expression was more vulnerable than it had been since she'd been reunited with her parents.

When Mara was very young, she had dreamed of being able to fly. Learning what the superhumans of her world seemed fated to become had quickly disabused her of that notion, and she'd been happy with her earthbound existence. But in that moment, she felt a deep ache where the dream of flying had once been.

"Izzy...I think this is the best thing I've seen in fifty years."

It took Mara a long moment to come back to herself, to remember not to linger in her own head. She turned to Izzy fully, and offered her her customary smile.

"You're pretty damn amazing, dude. And this is one hell of a shortcut."

The feeling of being weightless was something Lambert just couldn't describe, but he had to admit it was an impressive sight. He just wished he could have taken a picture of the view.

Approaching the floor, he instinctively started letting his mana flow for the impact. Preparing the Flash Burst, the world turned around for a moment.

Taking a moment to dispel his own power, dusting off.

"What a ride" He said. For a moment, Mara looked kind of affected for a second, before her usual smile came back. He gave her a quick, but firm pat on the shoulder for a second, even if he wasn't looking. "Some other time, could float more, it might make for a good picture"

"Well, shopping won't be done by itself" He said "Let's see what this place can offer"

“Heh... u-um, thanks...” Izzy couldn't help but blush at the pair's clear wonderment, scratching her neck awkwardly as she glanced away from Mara and Lambert. “Y-Yeah, what he said. Anytime you wanna fly... come talk to me. Can take you wherever you want. Probably. If we don't get arrested...”

She beamed despite herself, then cleared her throat and nodded along to Lambert's statement, again pointing towards the antiques store and letting herself float again.

“Alright. Can't hang up here all day. Antiques, here we come...!”

With that, she let them all fall again, though noticeably kept their pace slower than before by cutting off their momentum and then renewing it again. She didn't want to completely ruin their sightseeing, after all. Still, though, it wasn't long until they were back the right way up again.

Apart from Izzy herself, who immediately wobbled and fell over once her feet touched the ground. She shook off the disorientation, hopping back upright again as if nothing had happened.

“Coolio. Alright, dudes. Go nuts~”

For a while, James couldn't help cautiously weave between buildings and keeping an eye on the where everyone was going kinda keeping watch but a bit too nervous to actually follow. Getting lost in one of those big malls wouldn't exactly be a good way to end the first day at the Academy.

...Maybe it was best to go to where they sold milkshakes and wait. Although when stumbling across the Salt and Pepper Dinner and noticing people inside, he hesitated and decided to through a window to see a menu on a screen made James even more perplexed.

"...I-I...have no idea what h-half of these t-things even are...m-maybe I should just g-go back to the dorm..."

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.

Mitzi - Salt and Pepper Diner

"I've heard of the plant stuff," Mitzi started following the smith. "but anything but cultured meat is super expensive. I just want to know what the real stuff is like without the 'refined, subtle taste'."
Mitzi stopped gliding and started walking when she passed the door—she wasn't a savage after all. "Does the checkerboard pattern mean something? A guide to...oh." She had been about to wait by the door and probably not say anything until Brokk found the hostess when he just proceeded on. She spotted the 'seat yourself' sign then and scrambled after him.
"...I guess it does," Mitzi answered Brokk's question on the table after pausing a moment, glancing around, and finally mimicking Brokk's casually seating himself. "I hope they don't give us kids' portions."
Mitzi sat, folding her hands into her lap. "So, we're a bit far from the others. You didn't take me out here for something bad did you?"

Mara Springwood

Mara took one last look at the building they'd come from, before turning her focus to the task at hand. Really, she'd suggested finding a shop like this just for an excuse to get Lambert and his glowing eye out of the arcade, but while she was here there was something she'd been meaning to do.

"Well, I don't know about you cats, but I need to make a little trade."

Mara strode into the shop, weaving through the crowded aisles and displays of trinkets toward the shop clerk lounging behind a counter in the back. They were all but alone in the store, and the joint felt more like a museum than a place of business. It was a far cry from Creepy Joe's camper truck back home.

"Hey, man, nice digs. I've got some stuff to add to your collection, if you're in the market."

Once she reached the counter, Mara extracted her change purse and carefully emptied its contents onto the countertop. In the pile there was a decent handful of coins, and a couple of slightly weathered bills. She sorted the cash carefully, letting the clerk get a better view of what she had to offer. All told, about five dollars.

Though Mara was hoping it'd be worth a little more now.

"Vintage coinage, from the 1960s. From...Mirror Earth."

Sure enough, a closer look at the bills revealed that instead of the standard markings of modern currency, each was emblazoned with the face of The Martyr, Mirror Earth's infamous wartime dictator. While The Martyr was depicted smiling gently, taken in context the image was decidedly unsettling. Dozens of identical emblems gazed up at Mara and the shop clerk.

Mara wondered what the old man was up to these days.

"So, you interested?"

Lambert took a look at the things around him, to see if there was something he wanted. But finding interesting things was always a roll of dice. The young hopeful knight felt kind of tempted to boost his eyes to scan the place easier, but that just might be too much.

As it was, though, it was an odd, multicolored image of a dragon, quite striking at first sight, even if he felt a bit dizzy just by looking at it, maybe the colors and all the lighting or something is a bit hard to say, but at least it was quite eyecatching.

Eh, money is meant to be spent, anyway.

"Oy, how much for this one?" He called out. Checking his things, he at least had his money. Might as well fulfill his own promise, seeing if the others wanted something.

Antique Shop

The clerk took one of the odd coins off the counter, holding it under the light as he inspected it through his narrow glasses. "Depends. We've had stranger things come into this shop, and stranger people. But I can't say we've ever had someone bring in currency from another Earth. I think the BIA sent me a reference chart — that's the Bureau of Interdimensional Affairs, in case you were wondering — but I'll have to look it up. But please, feel free to browse. There should be something to keep your interest while you wait!"

His gazed turned towards the back of his shop, his long hooked nose jutting under the small rim of his frames. "How much you got?"

Izzy meanwhile let the two ‘cats’ (seriously that term was starting to rub off on her with how often Mara was using it) go off and do whatever it is they wanted, and instead directed her attention towards the shelves by her lonesome. She hummed quietly to herself as she peered at the antiques, picking up a snowglobe and shaking it a moment before setting it down again and proceeding to watch it intently.

...I wonder if I could fly in wintertime. I could see sideways snow. Upside-down blizzards. I could photograph it...

She heaved a sigh, straightening up again and stretching her muscles a little with a slight groan; turning her attention elsewhere.

...what am I doing?

She stared blankly at a random antique, but didn't appear to be actually looking at it. Her gaze was half-lidded, detached from reality and not in her usual fashion. She looked... dead, in a way. Like her spark had gone.

Lambert simply shrugged, deciding to see what the man would pull. He felt it was easier to just pay whatever the clerk is asking for. Haggling can be one bother.

"I've got enough, believe that" He said as if it wasn't a big deal. Even if showing his wallet might drag more eyes to himself, he did say he was paying.

Looking up to the others, he saw Mara going for the collection of coins, but Izzy... She seemed out of it.

"Hey, Iz" He called out, "You alright?"

Mara Springwood

Mara took the clerk's suggestion and began to idly browse the shelves, though she stayed close to the counter in anticipation of the clerk's return. She skimmed her fingers over several preserved animal skulls, few of which she could identify. Casually, she picked one up and held it to her face to get a better look, turning it over in her hands. It had sharp teeth and gaping eye sockets, and a strangely sunken jaw.

If Mara'd been back home, she would have suggested that the thing had been an ancestor of Mr. Crawford, her sadistic history teacher. That would've gone down great with her classmates; the time in the punishment closet would've been totally worth it.

In her examinations, one of Mara's fingers dipped into one of the eye sockets, and she stifled a gasp of surprise. It was...soft. Like flesh, or organs, instead of bone. She held the skull up to the light, tilting it to illuminate the socket, but it looked just like the rest of the skull. Tentatively, she touched it again.

Yup, still soft, still totally gross.

Mara looked toward the others, intent on sharing her discovery, when she heard Lambert ask if Izzy was okay. Her eyes snapped to Izzy, and, yeah, the chick did not look okay. Mara immediately started to weave her way toward Izzy, the skull still clutched in her hand.

As she got closer, Mara realized she recognized that look, and it sent a pang of familiar grief through her body. It was the look that some of her more sensitive friends back home had sometimes had - like their souls had gone for a joyride and left their bodies behind. It had been pretty common back home, actually, a way of making an unbearable life marginally more bearable by simply...not living it, for a while.

When she'd seen it in her friends, she had always felt like she was failing them.

Finally, Mara reached Izzy's side, where she could at least try to drag her classmate back into focus.

"Hey, Iz, check this out."

Mara gently reached for Izzy's hand, and pushed the strange skull into it, guiding Izzy's fingers toward the eye socket. Silently, she urged Izzy to come back, to feel the weight of the thing and use it as an anchor to pull herself back to the present.

"How does that feel to you? Totally weird, right?"

Izzy had completely blanked in regards to Lambert's call, and she similarly hadn't responded when Mara tried to get her attention. It wasn't until she felt the skull in her hand that she flexed her fingers and blinked, finally focusing again and looking down at the antique with a vague sense of curiosity.

“...yeah. Really weird...” she eventually nodded, giving Mara a somewhat forced smile and then directing another over towards Lambert. “I'm good. Honest. Keep doing what you're doing...~”

You feel weird too, little guy...? she mentally asked the animal skull, barely noticing how she'd refused to let it go just yet. People do. Don't know why. Chemicals and hormones and weird brain stuff, probably. Don't turn human, it's not that fun sometimes...

She remembered to hand the thing back to Mara, fighting to keep her attention in one place. She eventually resorted to her phone, slipping some earphones into place in order to focus on some tunes instead. Better than mauling some dusty old relic just to keep herself grounded.

Heh. Grounded.

She wished she could stay grounded.

Lambert raised an eyebrow, studying Izzy for a minute. There was something odd about all that, with how she looked.

His eyes started to change, as his mana started flowing. It was one of his simpler tricks, focus power on a place. The telescopic vision is one of the more useful ones. The old trick was called "Hawkeye" between the ones using it.

"Well, not very convincing, is it Mara?" He asked, sternly. Looking for anything odd or out of place, particularly of that... skull?

Mara Springwood

Mara sighed as she took the skull back from Izzy, turning it over in her hands once more. At least it'd pulled Izzy back into focus for a moment; she gave it a little pat on the bony head as a reward for a job well done. As Izzy stuck her portable music players into her ears, Mara begrudgingly decided to leave it at that. Much as it bothered her, sometimes you had to let people have some time to get their heads on straight.

Lambert, on the other hand, didn't seem inclined to let it go, if she was reading the whole "glowing eyes" thing right. He seemed worried that something supernatural was going down, but Mara was pretty sure that wasn't the case; either way, digging now would only make things worse. Mara gave Izzy's shoulder one solid squeeze and then casually stepped in between her and Lambert.

"Hey, man, the cat's doing her own thing. I respect it."

Mara casually tossed the skull between her hands as she began to walk towards him.

"Anyway, Lam, come check this thing out! It's totally trippy."

She came to a stop in front of the painting Lambert had gravitated toward, and dropped her voice to a whisper.

"Let it go for now, man. We can pick her brain later, when it's all there to pick."

With that, she held the skull level with her own head as if for comparison, giving him a conspiratorial look and returning to her normal volume. She pointed between the skull and her own face, and smiled.

"You think there's any family resemblance?"

Lambert looked at Izzy for a second, before stopping and just shrugging.

"Fair enough" He said. If anything happened, however, he'll just rush to check. Waiting for his own face to look normal again, he followed her, looking at the skull. It was quite the morbid thing, even if it was fascinating somehow.

"You are definitely the cute one of the family, dear" He said, without hesitation.

Brokk - Salt and Pepper Diner

"If I had bad intentions, Princess, I woulda taken you somewhere that wasn't public." Brokk said, slightly amused. "Though it wouldn't be very heroic of me to take advantage of you, eh? And don't worry; I doubt they'd confuse us for kids."

"The checkerboard is just for show. I thought it went well with the name. Black and white, salt and pepper, you know?" A voice added.

A server had come out of the kitchen, moving surprisingly quickly towards them. This was probably because she was wearing rollerskates, which she used to glide gracefully along the floor. The skates completed a retro-waitress look, with a blue dress and white waist apron.

This contrasted her skin, which was strangely pinkish and grainy. It also seemed to be the exact same color as her hair, which was styled back into similarly grainy pigtails.

"Hiya!" She greeted Mitzi, grinning. "I'm Salti. Welcome to the diner! You must be from that hero school Brokk told me about. It's nice to meet you. And before you ask, I'm an earth elemental made of rock salt. I get that question a lot." She paused a moment. "And no, you can't lick me. I don't get that question a lot, but it's always weird when I do."

"Hey, Salti." Brokk greeted back, as the waitress set a menu in front of each of them. "How's business been?"

"It's... been." She shrugged. "Honestly, I'm glad you came in. I was hoping to get a picture of you, and maybe your friend too. Thinking we could advertise as 'the Diner of Heroes'."

"I'd be happy to. Don't know about my friend here, though. This is Mitzi by the way. Mitzi, Salti." Brokk introduced the two. "And yeah, she's my roommate at Saint Academy."

"Great! I wanna make it a candid shot of you two eating, if that's okay? Oh, right, sorry, food." Salti pulled a pencil and notepad out of her apron pocket, "What can I get you today?"

Mitzi would find the menu to be traditional American fare; meaning sandwiches, burgers, and fried foods galore.

"Cola and a bacon cheeseburger, for me." Brokk said, without needing to look at the menu, before turning to Mitzi. "All the burgers are good here, though if you're feeling adventurous, there's a burger with peanut butter on it."

"Oh yeah." Salti agreed. "I don't have tastebuds but I've heard that one is really good."

Rosa

"You know," Rosa said as she trailed behind Rab, unable to keep herself from looking around in awe, "I was expecting something like, say, a small clothes shop styled like a corner shop. I wasn't expecting a bloody mall...though I can't say I don't like it."

She faltered, however, as they approached a tube. We're not seriously going to... And then Rab confirmed that yes, they were.

"Erm. Is that...safe?" Perhaps a silly question, in this place, but Rosa felt it was worth asking nonetheless.

Rab

He turned, giving them a winning, roguish smile, then paused before changing it to an understanding and reassuring one. Perhaps they need some encouragement. Straight talk. After a deep breath, Rab nodded in understanding. "I can see why you might be hesitant. I was, the first time I got into one of these. But you can trust me, they're almost totally foolproof. Almost? Well, in the beginning, there were accidents, yes. With...deacceleration. I shan't lie to you, they almost scrapped the whole project."

Rab continued walking toward the opening before them. "But nothing is completely safe. Nothing. And anyone who tries to tell you different is selling something. Being a hero is a risky business, but many people have done it because it needed to be done. Just as many people have worked pretty hard to make sure these work without flawlessly." Rab grinned at his friends. "So, yes, it is totally safe. And a LOT of fun." He was about to leap into the tube and sail away when the speedster paused yet again and held out a hand to Rosa and Lux with a sympathetic air. "Shall we?"

Lux - ZI 8

"Uh-huh! I've already got a superhero costume...the one I'm wearing right now, hehe...", Lux sheepishly replied.

He really needs to be mindful about what clothes he is going to wear at class, or at trips or, in a more serious context, during a battle with supervillains. Like, he is not gonna fight baddies in his birthday suit...though he's probably not THAT dumb enough to do anything like that.

"I'm not too worried about getting messed up...", Lux went toward the tube, looking puzzled. "I just wonder if I'm gonna fit into it...", he said as he cautiously entered the tube.

Mara Springwood

Conflict safely averted, Mara shifted so that both she and Lambert could keep Izzy in their peripheral vision without outwardly staring at her. It still bothered her that there wasn't more she could do, but she'd learned from experience that smothering somebody usually just made them less likely to let you help them in the future. Mara'd known the cat for less than a day, so she'd have to content herself with playing the long game. Meanwhile, she turned her attention to Lambert. A little harmless flirting wouldn't exactly be a hardship.

Mara narrowed her eyes playfully, moving the skull away from her face.

"Good answer. Means I don't have to take you out."

Mara winked, before turning to inspect the painting Lambert had been eyeing before. It was a dragon, vividly rendered, and Mara smirked to herself at the predictable choice. The cat had that whole "knight in shining armor" thing going on, after all.

"Well, I wonder what possibly could have drawn you to this! You slay it in a past life, Lancelot?"

“I mean, dragon-slaying's pretty pog,” Izzy idly remarked as she passed nearby, casting her still-somewhat-distant gaze up at the painting as she tapped her feet to the music playing in her headphones. “Wonder if we'll find any... ehhh, wouldn't wanna slay it actually. Maybe ride it... or like... I dunno, have a conversation with it about stuff. Price of gold or something...”

...wait.

Her brow creased suddenly, and she looked towards the guy in charge of the antiques store. With a sudden burst of life, she zipped up to the counter and leant on it towards him—poking the man in the chest twice with a determined look on her face.

“Hey. You have any gravity stuff in here? Like... I dunno. Ancient floaty relic thingies? Stone Age prototype rocket thrusters?”

It was a long shot, admittedly, but it was something she wanted to try asking about at least.

The man craned his neck from behind the counter, looking over a list of inter-dimensional currency as he fiddled with his glasses. "Might have somethin' in the back. Gimme a minute..."

He walked over towards the back of the shop, tracing the shelves with a long crooked finger until it found its target. "Gotcha!"

It'd settled on a pair of stone discus, thin as a board and smoothed to perfection. They were marked with ancient runes, turquoise carvings circling the edges. The centres were hollowed out, embedded with round turquoise jewels that could neatly fit a pair of feet.

"Stumbled on these down in the bayou. Probally used to belong to some ancient culture or another. Back when humans maybe weren't always the dominant species. Still figurin' that one out. But I think this might help with whatever you're tryin' to do."
