The sequel to Battery Staple Games' 20XX is out on Steam in Early Access. If you're wondering what 20XX or 30XX is, it's a rogue-lite game inspired by Mega Man X — as X Nina or Zero Ace, you fight and wall-jump your way through eight stages, defeat bosses and take their powers, and then take down the bad guy at the end.

Some changes to the sequel —

  • It's now sporting a pixel art style, fitting its retro inspiration
  • There's a Mega Mode that has saves and static stages, so you can play it like an indie Mega Man X if you want
  • Nina and Ace have undergone Divergent Character Evolution. In 20XX, they only differed in what their default weapons could be, but now in addition to acquiring different powers, they have additional unique mechanics, like Ace having a style meter instead of energy and Nina being able to combine powers
  • The six stages in the EA build all have a unique theme, as opposed to 20XX where each theme was shared by two bosses
  • The core system has been overhauled. Instead of equipping head, arm, torso, and leg parts, each part now has a point cost and you can equip any part as long as you have points
  • More that I'm probably forgetting at the moment

So far, I've had fun with the EA version. It feels like there's a good amount of challenge and the music and visuals are ace. Anyone else check this out?

Surprised you didn't mention the level editor. Some people are gonna have a LOT of fun with that. Some will create masterworks of gameplay challenge and stage design. Others will just use it to draw dicks. Well, as long as they're having fun...

Hmm. Only question for me is to buy it now or later.

You are not alone.

Ah man, I knew I forgot something. Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing what people can make with the level editor. Can't wait to see how people will re-create every Mega Man level with it :p

Necro to say that the game will be fully released on August 9!

They've added two more stages for the full 8 robot master stages, added more items and weapons, and several mysteries are still present. Still a bit more needs to be done, but they're almost there. Looking forward to 1.0 :)

The first DLC, Feline Fury, is out. They've given the little robo-kitty a powersuit and are letting her take herself out on for a walk. There have also been a bunch of free updates in between, adding more characters, stage variants, and a whole bunch of challenges to take on. Good excuse to get back in and do a few more runs :p

I honestly haven't played any character aside from Nina, tbh. A lot of bosses just feel finicky at close range.

Continue writing our story of peace.

ngl, I also stick with Nina if I want to do some serious runs. Having that extra time to dodge stuff helps. Ace can be pretty nuts if you get the right stuff, but yeah, that's a big risk :x
