My only objection is that it's a bit long, but I'm not sure that losing the first panel gives the other two enough context.
I think OP works as is.
Last panel is enough.

It could work?
(Annoyed grunt)I think panels 1+3 would be better, to show that the guy on the right is indeed a bad guy.
Indeed.
Ehhhh...not really sure that 1 + 3 gets enough of the "why" behind the respect.
Is the "why" actually important to the trope? I don't think it really matters whether the villain respects the hero for their virtue, competence, or something else.
It's not crucial, but in this particular example, jumping from 1 to 3 leaves me asking "why?" and that implies a lack of context.
I don't think that the hero's motivation is important for this trope. It is about the villain's reaction.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.Yeah, but what is the villain reacting to?
Is the 3-panel version really that bad? Pretty sure there are many examples with 3 panels or more.

Original the Signature. Do not steal. The 3-panel version is unnecessarily long. The last panel in itself shows 100% of the trope: that the villain acknowledges the hero's virtues when being defeated. The first panel adds some context that the big guy is really a criminal and thus we are seeing the capture of a villain, not a kidnapping by the villain. The second panel adds the hero's motivation, which is quite frankly unimportant for the trope.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.is it? The respect has to come from somewhere.
Like, the description mentions the hero doing something heroic that makes even the villain acknowledge them.
And really without the context of the second panel, youu'd just end up with Worthy Opponent instead.

Original the Signature. Do not steal.1+2+3 > 1+3 > blank > 3 by itself.
