Once upon a time, some guys came up with a game that would be the first of its kind to be about the War in Iraq: Six Days in Fallujah

It was going to be published by Konami, but they ended up cancelling SDIF due to the raging controversy going on.

UNTIL NOW.

Oh, really? :O This is back? I remember reading about this back in, like, high school and then heard about it being cancelled out of concerns of insensitivity to veterans.

I remember hearing about the controversy from Extra Credits and Joshscorcher.

[up][up]Yep, and after it was made due to veterans too!

I certainly never expected to see it again.

Being over a decade later and by different developers for two console generations later, I think it's a little disingenuous to say this is gonna be the same game...

Either way, I can't say I'm particularly excited for yet more US military propaganda from the video game industry.

Based on actual us war crimes like dropping uranium rounds on civilians and using white phosphorous on enemy combatants.

Yay

It's time to challenge outdated stereotypes about what video games can be.

…By releasing yet another entry in the most stereotypical video game genre in existence?

My platoon leader back in my Army days was at that battle, and he called it "a complete shitshow". Not sure it warrants a game, but eh...

The entire purpose of the game, both then and now, is to put people in the shoes of the soldiers there to see what they went through.

Really interesting thread from someone who was actually in Fallujah.

tl;dr: They're not optimistic about this revival and think it's pretty obviously going to be a propaganda piece. Apparently, the original vision for the game was that of a single person trying to escape Fallujah during the battle, now it's just another "yay war crimes" tactical shooter.

Tbf the idea of a spec ops type game showing the darkside of the war through one of its horrendous battles sounds actually quite interesting. The chances of us getting that is low though.

I thought the original thing was taking place from the view of a soldier in Fallujah.

Also drop the war crimes shit please, if you're just going the "Dur hur America bad" thing.

Are you not familiar with this battle. It's one of the most infamous of the Iraq war

White phosphorous was used on enemy combatants, wounded were gunned down, the area still has a large cancer rate among infants because the US deployed uranium rounds on the battlefield

The different developer part has a bit of an asterisk next to it. The company publishing the game, Victura, was formed by the CEO of the original developer.

Well, thanks for reminding me why I loathe COD, Battlefield, and other war shooters.

I mean, I thought having actual veterans who were in Fallujah brought an air of authenticity to this project, but nope. A thousand times nope.

(I actually have a friend from university who was in the army. I don't know if he was ever in Fallujah nor if he would approve of this.)

That there were weapons of mass destruction in iraq, when there were none, and given that it was spewed by W and his vice president, Cheney, I would say it is America's lie.

Well technically white phosphorous which the US used their is a WMD. So Right for the Wrong Reasons...

Okay so one guy I think summed why this is a terrible idea on the reddit game thread

I don't see a way to do that with a real world event while respecting the troops when less than a hundred U.S. soldiers died but estimates show 8 times that number of civilians were killed, a full third of Iraqis killed in the operation, and the armaments used continued to impact the civilian population after the battle's conclusion. I don't think there's a way to thread that needle with a video game based on such a dark, real event.

[up][up] At some point they also started to claim that Saddam was involved in 9/11, even though they perfectly knew he wasn’t (not that Saddam had a spotless resumé exactly, but that wasn’t part of it).

…And I’m only realizing now that an entire generation had the time to be born and become old enough to vote since the invasion of Iraq. Damn. I still feel like it happened less than a decade ago.

Maybe there will be a mode where you a civilian trying not to get shot and when you try to flee the town US troops turn you back.

Weren't we acting on information from some Iraqi that had given us the information, who actually admitted a few years ago that he'd lied to get us to depose Saddam?
