I feel nothing towards Blizzard on this one. The "Actiblizz bad hurr" and the "don't have to pander to China any more" offset.

I'm mostly sympathetic toward Chinese players of these games who will lose access to their accounts and potentially over a decade of invested time through no act of their own.

I would have said that maybe this could inspire more domestic Chinese devs to fill the void but then I remember the CCP’s antics the past year would make it not worth the hassle.

I knew he was a Fallen Creator, but a criminal now?

Thats crazy. He must have really let his contributions to Sonic get to his Ego.

At least Keiji Inafune owned up to Mighty No 9 sucking. Yuji Naka doubled down after Balan Wonderworld released, blaming Square Enix entirely alongside the artist for Balan Wonderworld instead of owning up to any faults he had as a game director.

Balan is like Sonic 06 (and Forces, but Naka left when that game was developed), a game of wasted potential.

I'd say this a "how the mighty had fallen" moment, but TBH he seemed to had gone downhill after leaving SEGA and Sonic Team during 06's development and esp after Balan.

Ironically I am considering a similar take on how he handled the game's story but I learned from his mistake and decided to A. release the books before the game and B. actually make sure the story can be experienced in game.

As above, so below.

Voice Actor 'Bummed' He Was Recast In PS5 Spider-Man Sequel Due To Age

In a deleted tweet first spotted by Eurogamer, Harry Osborn actor Scott Porter responded to a fan sharing their excitement to hear his performance in the upcoming Spider-Man sequel. He explained that he wasn’t coming back to voice the character and said that while he gets it, he was bummed.

“While I voiced Harry in the first Spider-man, I unfortunately will not be in the sequel,” tweeted Porter. As for why he won’t be returning, he claims that it comes down to Insomniac’s decision to “go photo real” with its actors in the upcoming PS 5 sequel and that he believed his age difference between the younger Harry character was “too much to overcome.” (Porter is 43.)

“I was bummed but I get it,” Porter said “Gonna be an incredible game.”

Oh, I thought it was his voice, but yeah, if they insist on photorealistic actors...

Do gamers really care that much about the character looking like the actor, though? I can't say I ever did.

I doubt most people care. And most games aren't like LA Noire or Myst V with the detailed facial capture that basically requires the character to look like the actor.

It maybe kinda links into how a bunch of AAA game developers have the voice actors doing mocap that isn't super well directed or handled.

I get why mocap is a thing in some ways (it's a relatively cheap way to handle complex animations) but like...maybe have dedicated mocap actors? They don't need to voice the characters, but if you got a bunch of like...I don't know, improv actors or modern dancers in, you could do a hell of a lot better.

It'd be better than paying voice acting only prices and getting a physical performance out of it.

Ah, but there you touch on something very sensitive in modern culture: the idea of authenticity. We expect our actors to be as authentic as possible in their roles, which means we want them to do everything: act, voice, sing, dance, do their own stunts. And when they don't, and use a body or voice double, that is usually seen as a demerit against the work.

That used to be different. In an earlier age of Hollywood, it was much more accepted by audiences that actors did not perform their own stunts, and that their physique did not necessarily match the role, just to name one thing.

That is mainly a movie industry thing, but I think with games growing more serious about their storytelling credentials, it is starting to bleed over into games as well. Or at least, developers perceive it as such.

I think it's literally just the AAA companies being cheap.

Especially since stuff like stunts? Most actors still don't do them themselves and no one really cares.

Well, I watched Flashdance the other week, and people had been upset about the actress not doing her own dance scenes for that one, particularly since the body double was rather obvious.

There's a difference between "cast an actor who can actually sing/dance" and "cast an actor who can jump out of a plane." And no one cares about like, suit acting. Like how Pedro Pascal wasn't actually on set a lot of the time when filming the Mandalorian.

For a video game, if the AAA company was like "we had four mocap actors who did the physical performances and the voice actors were separate", no one would care enough for it to impact anything at all.

It really is just the companies being cheap and getting the mocap performances (from their perspective) as a free bonus on top of the voice acting.

Which means the mocap performances often turn out subpar because, suprise: voice actors aren't trained to do that kind of thing.

You know, generally speaking.

You get what you pay for.

It's even weirder when you consider that there's often enough cutscenes in these games to qualify as a full-blown movie, if not a TV show, I think someone clocked God of War Ragnarok as having like 12 hours of it.

On a more mundane tangent, why is it that modern console releases seem simultaneous? The earliest example off the top of my head was the release of the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3. I distinctly remember those two releasing on the same day, and the 360 was released earlier explicitly for the head start in market share. These days the Xbox and Playstation brands share release dates.

They don't want to give anyone else an advantage. Nintendo cares a lot less so they don't bother scheduling around anyone else, but Sony and Microsoft deliberately line up their releases these days so that neither side can get an advantage.

I think Sony aimed to match the Wii with the PS 3 because they still weren't really taking Microsoft seriously as a competitor since while Microsoft released the 360 first...it was a flop in Japan and had a lot of really basic problems.

Right, it's a competition thing. Each company hopes that this way, they can get a leg up over the other by outselling them early on, and then declaring their own console to be more popular, something that is harder to do when the competitor has a head start.

You'd think they'd put some effort into releasing their product sooner, but then again there is a limit on how functional you ought to have your console upon release. It's just unusual that it's always the exact same date for the last couple of generations.

I feel like there was also a clear attempt to create clear console generations for a few years. If everyone releases at the same time, it gives the signal that a new generation begins and you can more easily sell the evolution of your brand compared to the other brands (especially in the graphics department).

And then Nintendo was like "Dude, I literally don't give a shit, I'm developing the Wii to see if motion control works."

It's obvious that Nintendo is no longer a part of this phenomenon for various reasons, but it's as if Sony and Microsoft's development observations are intertwined like a spy network to be this consistent on their release dates. You'd think there would be some gaps for the sake of edging each other on an earlier market share and/or requiring more time to fine-tune their products before release.

I think they literally coordinate at this point. Microsoft got burned really hard by rushing a console to release with the 360 and Sony figured out that competing with Nintendo was pretty pointless.

So making a deal that they'll release stuff at the same time means that neither company has to rush and that neither company will get an "unfair" advantage.
