We can only hope. SSSS Gridman was some quality stuff.

Spinoff of a four-year-old game. Not really sure what to make of it beyond "Wow, that art style didn't translate to animation well"

Edit: Also; An isekai for the ladies

One of those preview-ish things I do mostly for my own benefit but then post here anyway:

    Stuff I have thoughts on
86

Military SF. Not really a mecha series, but the tone is pretty similar. Comes highly recommended from critics and casual audiences alike

Bakuten!!

Sports series. Looks like it skews towards cute boys doing cute things, but it's presence on noitaminA makes me thinks there'll be a decent amount of drama

Battle Athletes Daiundoukai ReSTART!

Huh, I never thought this franchise was successful enough to get a new entry nearly 25 years after the last. To be fair, as an all-female, yuri-teasing sports series it is in some ways for suited to modern tastes than those of the 90s, but the original series also had a lot of wacky bullshit and drama that'd be unusual now. Be interesting to see how this turns out!

Blue Reflection Ray

So this is a spinoff of a game where cute girls fight the manifestation of other cute girls' negative feelings via magical girl battles. It looks like this'll be similar?

Burning Kabaddi

It's a shounen sports series. Lots of passion, not much female presence

Cestvs: The Roman Fighter

This one is odd: Sometimes it is genuinely a fairly normal sports series, but it spends a lot of it's time being a period drama. Well, at least in the source material. This doesn't even have the same name...

Also, I have to register a complaint about how they handled the character designs—Cestvs was this amazing twunk in the manga, but now he's basically a potato. Appalling

Combatants Will Be Dispatched!

It's from the author of KonoSuba. By most accounts, it's very similar, just kinda worse. And the sexual harassment jokes veer into feeling actively misogynistic

Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro

A cute romance comedy for people that like femdom. I've seen a lot of people ready to get offended over people getting offended by this series, but nothing I've seen it it goes very farnote

Dragon Goes House-Hunting

Fantasy parody. I found it dull and disliked all of the characters, but apparently this a minority opinion. Anime's looking ugly, though

EDENS ZERO

It's a shounen fighting series. Apparently skews a bit older in intended reading age than most, being rather dark, with some fairly hardcore fanservice

This is from the guy that did Fairy Tail, but I understand this one was plotted out ahead of time

Fairy Ranmaru ~I Will Help Your Heart~

Magical boys, with a focus on hunks. Even the shota is ripped!

Farewell, My Dear Cramer

So this is the sequel to Sayonara Football, which is getting a movie around the same time. Not sure why they're doing it like that

Anyway, while this is being advertised like a drama, I understand the source material is pretty low-key

Hige o Soru. Soshite Joshi Kousei o Hirou

Uh, so while the premise certainly seems to be setting up an age gap romance, I'm not sure if it actually happens. What I read of it focused a lot on the workplace, with potential romance there. Though I can't claim to have read much of it

I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level

Technically isekai, but really mostly a cute girl comedy. Structured as a series of short adventures that introduce new girls who often end up joining the main character's found family/yuri harem

Joran The Princess of Snow and Blood

There is no evidence that this has anything to do with Lady Snowblood

Staff is a bit worrying: The director has put out a lot of mediocre shit, and the writer mostly does live-action. At least the pv looks good?

Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui

This one really is an age-gap romance. It's also a comedy but does that by basically just turning the volume up on a regular josei romance. I found it quite unfunny and the whole thing rather dire. I'm definitely not the target audience, though

Kyuukyoku Shinka Shita Full Dive RPG ga Genjitsu Yorimo Kuso-Gee Datta

???? This is a rare case where they're making an anime of something without a manga adaption first. Can't find much on the original LNs, either. From the Cautious Hero writer, so it's probably not complete garbage, at least

MARS RED

A period action drama. With vampires!

What stuck out to me about this is that it really emphasizes just how crippling needing to consume blood and avoid sunlight would be

Mashiro no Oto

Shounen drama. Big emotions. Pretty well regarded

Odd Taxi

I suspect it's using furries and general surrealism to add a layer of disassociation in order to get away with tackling otherwise uncomfortable social issues

Osananajimi ga Zettai ni Makenai Love Come

Romance dramedy. Neither particularly clever nor lewd. It is potentially worrying since the plot starts off with the main character deciding to get revenge on the girl he likes for the crime of already having a boyfriend. She's a major character so I assume he gets over himself, but...

Ui-mama did the character designs, if that's something you care about

Pretty Boy Detective Club

It's a NisiOisiN series being animated by Shaft. Probably not going to be exactly like Monogatari, but I'd still expect lots of clever dialogue and surreal artistic flair

The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent

So isekai aimed at women tends to exist on a sliding scale between "persecution complex" and "slow life". This one leans towards the latter. ...I hear good things, but it's too far out of my comfort zone for me to be able to say much myself

Seven Knights Revolution Eiyuu no Keishousha

Based on a mobage. It's a spinoff rather than a straight adaption, which could in theory lead to decent storytelling, but it's definitely got cast bloat issues regardless

Shadows House

Well, this is an odd one. It looks like gothic horror, but the tone is light-ish and the main character could easily come from a moe series. Still has some horrifying stuff, though. I'd probably call it's genre fantasy-mystery?

Shaman King

Shounen fighting series from the turn of the millennium, most notable for the cartoony designs. Despite what some fans may have you believe, it was considered good but not great at the time, and the genre has made progress since

This is supposed to adapt all 35 volumes of the manga, which is... concerning, since that'd normally take around 7 cours, well beyond what anime normally gets scheduled for

SSSS.Dynazenon

Related to SSSS.Gridman. Same staff, premise looks similar. Maybe it'll take on similar ideas in a more cohesive manner. Maybe it'll be something only kinda similar. Maybe the team only had one good idea in them. Who knows!

Super Cub

Sure looks like iyashikei. Based on a light novel, though, so I'd expect some drama

Tokyo Revengers

So yeah, it's a time travel story with gangs. Skews towards drama

To Your Eternity

An immortal, shapeshifting alien learns about humanity. Lotta death. Also prone to major tonal shifts

Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-

So this is (partiallynote ) from the writer of Re: Zero, which on it's own would be a good sign, but his last original anime was Sigururi, which was fairly underwhelming

The World Ends With You The Animation

The game this is based on does have a genuinely good story. ...It's just one very much designed with a game's structure in mind. It'll need some serious rewriting to be an anime, and I have no idea whether the writer is up to the task

i just found out about Vivy and i'm definitely interested in it. ' Sirgdrifa was underwhelming, but Re:Zero really knows how to deliver the pay-off, though it spends a long time setting up the problems like a puzzle to develop it's characters and paying off their development at the climax

Higurashi Satsu has been announced for July.

Also, goddammit Goro Akechi. Because of him, the “killer detective trope” had a resurgence in popularity (its a cyclical trope in nature). Turns out Gou is basically Satako using H173 to inflict targeted psychotic breakdowns.

Satako has become a 1000x more malicious version of Akuma Homura using Goro Akechi’s methods.

Another big cour, a little bigger than Fall Cour 2020 on my end... Might as well share some anime I'm anticipating / looking forward to for this cour:

     Anime I'm Looking Forward to
  • Moriarty the Patriot 2nd Cour: Can't wait to see how they'll adapt A Scandal in the British Empire, which I believe is based on A Scandal in Bohemia from the original Conan Doyle stuff.
  • My Hero Academia 5th Season: Can wait to see how they'll adapt the Joint Training Arc, both on the Class A VS Class B stuff and on Shinsou's return to the plot.
  • Edens Zero: Hiro Mashima's next big work after Fairy Tail! That's enough for me to anticipate this...
  • Bakuten!!: Another gynmastics anime of mostly men, plus Centimilimental's doing the OP. Interesing enough for me...
  • The Way of the House Husband: In for the comedy, Kenjirou Tsuda, and household hijinx.
  • Shakunetsu Kabaddi: Again, another spots anime mostly of mostly men,, but this time in a sport I have never heard of. Ok!
  • MARS RED: Vampire and Military... Probably some action... In for the edge perhaps...

Can't wait for these and a lot more anime coming soon!!

The RC preview is out. Will Spring be able to go toe to toe with Winter?

Sequels

  • Moriarty the Patriot: The first season was polished in all aspects, and I hope the second season can build on that foundation to push this show into the realm of “exceptional”.
  • Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu: It’s quite the enjoyable trashy kind of ecchi-harem-comedy-power-fantasy isekai. And I will always like protagonists who don’t use swords.

Will watch

  • The World Ends With You: It’s one of my top ten video games of all time, one of few I cared to 100% and by all accounts it looks like the anime will do it justice. Holy. Crap. This could be the only thing I watch this cour and I’d still be cheering. You guys cannot imagine the depths of fanboying I’m suppressing right now. I need it!
  • Godzilla SP: It’s Godzilla by Bones and Orange. Here’s hoping the CG can pay tribute to the King of Monsters.
  • Shaman King: I love these reboots of old-school anime. My friends and I are stoked.
  • Shakunetsu Kabaddi: Average sports manga, but should be decent. Kabaddi is underappreciated.
  • Sentouin Hakenshimasu: The manga’s funny in its own right even though it never quite matches up to Kono Suba. A sufficiently wacky anime adaptation might be just the thing to remedy that.
  • Megalo Box 2: I am unconvinced that we needed to see the continuation of Joe’s journey, but as long as the matches don’t pull any punches, I’m all for it.
  • Fumetsu no Anata e: Looking to be like a gorgeous, slow-paced, ponderous thinkpiece.
  • Odd Taxi: I remember watching the PV for this! Looks great. Thinking this will be along the lines of games like Neo Cab.
  • 86: The premise alone already hit me with the feeling it’s going to be something special. And with A-1 at the helm we can be reasonably sure it’ll have good animation and sound design. Yeah I think I’m excited for this wartime drama.
  • Bishounen Tanteidan: Nisio Isin plus Shaft rarely disappoints, though I’m not too enthused by the pitch.
  • Tokyo Revengers: Oh cool, one of those time-traveling savior stories. But this time the guy will be infiltrating a gang, so it’s also a nice spin on those spy-thriller stories.
  • Makenai Love Comedy: Dogakobo rom com so it’s sure to be energetic and entertaining.
  • Cestvs: Know what, I’m always clamoring for more wuxia in anime, and this might not be it, but a martial arts story set in ancient Rome is a step in the right direction. Give me the tournament arc, stat!

Will try out

  • SSSS. Dynazenon: Maybe I’ll like it better than Gridman. Maybe.
  • Blue Reflection Ray: It’s a video game adaptation that apparently alters the story to fit the anime format instead of trying to adapt the video game plot wholesale. That alone deserves notice.
  • Yakunori Mug Cup mo: Anime focused on one specific art form (or hobby or sport) are always nice to watch for the associated trivia, even if the show itself is unexciting.
  • Mashiro no Oto: Like above, it’s worth a peek for the focus on shamisen. Might watch it all the way through if the music’s great!
  • Vivy: It’s nice to have a story where the AI has an AI friend to be with. The premise seems ambitious but we’ll see if it delivers.
  • Sayonara Watashi no Cramer: Will hold me over until one of the football manga that I adore get their anime. If it’s decent.
  • Seijo no Maryoku Bannou Desu: Good old-fashioned isekai with a reverse harem twist.
  • Jouran: I’m up for a Meiji-era revenge thriller.
  • Super Cub: Reminds me of when I learned how to ride a bicycle and ended up traveling outside our neighborhood, much to my mother’s dismay. So yeah this is probably one of those childhood-memories comfort-food anime.
  • Bakuten!: Huh, another team sports anime with super pretty boys. Seems like a big project, so here’s hoping it doesn’t skimp on the animation and character building.
  • Battle Athletes Restart: Now here’s a 90s anime reboot whose original I haven’t watched before. It definitely has the 90s vibe. Let’s see if it can hold my attention even without the nostalgia element.

Will probably drop

  • Dragon, Ie wo Kau: I’ll admit, I’m mainly negative on this show because I have a bias against dragons. It does look good, though.
  • Seven Knights Revolution: Add it to the pile of generic fantasy mobile game adaptations.
  • Mars Red: Vampires are eh.
  • Full Dive RPG: Isekai SOL which seems rather pedestrian.
  • Fairy Ranmaru: Reminded me of the recent live-action Winx show. Maybe it’ll just be as So Bad, It's Good.
  • Shadows House : Creepy dolls the anime I guess?

Will not watch

  • My Hero Academia: I’ve long since shifted permanently to the manga side.
  • Koi to Yobu wa Kimochi Warui: The plot literally is about a grown man trying to solicit a minor. Gross.
  • Thunderbolt Fantasy: Haven’t watched the previous seasons.
  • Kingdom: Same as above. And I’ve been thinking about reading the manga anyway.
  • Hige wo Soru: This might be interesting, but it’s five times more likely to be a trashy drama. Will watch it only if it gets rave reviews.
  • Fruits Basket: Didn’t end up watching the remake. You know what I would watch though? A remake of Curious Play. And that’s my random tangent for the day.
  • Slime Isekai Spinoff: Naw thanks.
  • Slime-300 Isekai: Err, no way I’m typing that long-ass name.
  • Zombieland Saga: Haven’t watched the previous seasons.
  • Edens Zero: I’m fine with sticking to the manga, but for anyone who hasn’t read it before, Edens Zero has so far been a more enjoyable romp than the author’s previous work, Fairy Tail, was.
  • Ijaranaide, Nagatoro-san: Seems very much like a single-gimmick rom com where the gimmick is a teasing girl a la Takagi-san.
  • Mairimashita Iruma-kun: It’s a standard gag comedy and I’ve watched enough of season 1 to know it ain’t for me.

As for Koi to Yobu, um, haha, I actually read the manga years back. Honestly I'm still not sure what to make of it

The story kind of combines it's gag nature with some feel goodness and legitimately exciting moments.

As someone up to date, I'd say if there's on criticism I'd give it, it's that the author has a habit of having Iruma's group always win, though that's remedied somewhat from background events beyond their control still going on

We’ve already got some Spring shows!

First Episode Impressions

  • Yuukoku no Moriarty S2: Starting off strong with a three-way battle of wits between Sherlock, the Moriarty siblings and the freshly introduced Irene Adler. As was the case with season 1, impeccable animation, sound design and writing— so still good, but I sure hope we get to see the geniuses bring their absolute A-game and thrust this show into greatness. Continuing.
  • Mars Red: Vampires are running about in interwar Japan, and there’s a secret special squad whose sole purpose is to hunt down these creatures of the night. Fairly typical premise, but it’s in the telling of the story that sets it apart. First off, there’s zero action, and little explanation. For the premiere we follow a soldier who’s trying to communicate with a “newly-infected” stage actress. It’s here that we see and hear bits and pieces about how vampires work. It’s rather abstract, which might detract some viewers. It almost reminds me of a stage play, with its use of wide-angle shots and lighting. And it also reminded me of SHAFT what with the jump cuts and cryptic dialogue. This feels more like an episode 0 than an episode 1, so I’ll at least see how things will unfold in the story proper. Continuing.

I guess this season is starting early?

Mars Red: First episode was mostly a cinematography showcase, but it's very nice cinematography

Joran: Wow, this is a mess. Is it a gritty spy thriller? A goofy Bond-like? A theatrical supernatural action series? Who knows! The staff certainly don't seem to. Nice aesthetics, though (which lean cyberpunk)

EDENS ZERO: Yeah, I'm not feeling this. Fight scene was decent, but nothing about the writing is doing it for me

First Episode Impressions

  • Joran - Princess of Snow and Blood: Not gonna lie, my attention checked out about two minutes in. It’s a mediocre story of revenge, with uninteresting characters you’ve seen a dozen times before. Will try until episode three.
  • Godzilla SP: In contrast to Joran above, this pilot spends all of its time developing its protagonists, and they’re quite the likable, quirky chaps! This also means that this is more or less introductions, and all the kaiju stuff will properly come into play in the next episode. Heck, if I didn’t know this was a Godzilla show, I wouldn’t have guessed until that short segment at the end where we see the giant radioactive skeleton. I would have thought it would be some SOL comedy about alien researchers and an eccentric team of handymen, and know what, I still would have watched it. Continuing.

Who knew the early releases would start first impressions earlier than usual...

Initial Reactions:

BNHA S5: Strong re-introduction to Class 1-A, plot unfolding as Dabi meets Endeavor, and the whole Dabi & Hawks meeting thing... I'm in for a treat...
Moriarty the Patriot 2nd Cour: So far, so good as we head through "A Scandal in the British Empire", a nod to "A Scandal in Bohemia" from the original Conan Doyle... There were some things in the manga that didn't make it to the anime, but in hindsight, those were perhaps striking to probably just my side of the fandom, so meh...
MARS RED: Starting off with nods to Salome as we get introduced to our main character Maeno; although, Defrott intrigued me more this episode... I wonder if we'll see more of him... The aspect ratio threw me off, but I can bear it...
Jouran: THE PRINCESS OF SNOW AND BLOOD: An introduction to the world where the Tokugawa remained in power in Meiji-era Japan due to some precious commodity... The ending left me hanging onto the cliff that's for sure!
EDENS ZERO: Prologue to the main story. Nostalgia from Fairy Tail aside, this might as well be a typical shounen opening. Now off to the stars we ride as Shiki's adventure begins!

Godzilla SP: Pretty solid! A sort of near-future comedy/mystery. Only just getting into the kaijuu by the end

Full Dive RPG: Kind of boring? Clearly trying to be a comedy, but it's just not that funny

fillerdude from Inside Since: Jul, 2010 Relationship Status: Getting away with murder

First Episode Impressions

  • Tokyo Revengers: I kind of feel like it rushed through the intro, then it turns out this episode 0 is like a highlights reel of the first three episodes. I honestly don’t know why the studio released it, unless they wanted the manga readers to get a taste of what’s to come. For everyone else though, give episode 0 a pass. It skips from scene to scene with minimal context. Will watch the actual first episode when that rolls around.
  • Full Dive RPG: One of those shows that likes pointing out how it isn’t cliche. The NPC murder gag was predictable but amusing; otherwise, it was a standard setup episode where they go through the motions before they reveal the gimmick at the end. Let’s see if it can actually be funny in the next episode. Will try maybe three episodes.

Hylarn (Don’t ask) Relationship Status: Anime is my true love

Shaman King: Well, I liked it more than Edens Zero, at least. Decently directed, but the writing isn't doing much for me, and the fight was kinda lame. Also it has these really cartoony character designs but the coloring is very anime and that's throwing me off

SSSS.Dynazenon: Well-enough made, though the bouncing between teen angst and high camp is kinda odd

thuse from see timezone Since: Oct, 2020 Relationship Status: TV Tropes ruined my love life

Initial Reactions:

Burning Kabaddi: So we got a former soccer rising star named Yoigoshi gettig coerced into joining the kabaddi team with blackmail, a day's worth of exposure, and a hubris-breaking promise... Rough start, but an otherwise interesting premise to start with. I wonder what will happen next...
Mashiro no Oto: So we got Setsu in Tokyo from the snowy countryside, a woman in a deteriorating relationship, and the sound of the shamisen weaving the sentiments from those experiences into something as moving as the seasons... An interesting music anime fit for this season. I wonder what will happen next...
