This is spoilers for the manga, but yes, the anime cut out the sideplot with Robe in episode 3-4, which is what initially got people worried that we'd be going anime-original for the ending. I think what we got shows why this version of events was binned - it feels too rushed and Edward goes from being a legitimate threat to almost "I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids!"-tier inconvenience.

It's been fun.

As someone who has not read the manga, I now understand why the last arc felt like an insignificant sidequest. Still fun, though!

Final Impressions

  • Wonder Egg Priority: Massive disappointment. The first few episodes leaned on being a fantastical metaphor for sensitive issues, and was a weird but wonderful take on magical girls. But then the series seemed set on throwing out all the good stuff out of the window. Like revealing that apparently a malevolent being that two dudes made in a lab is the one causing girls to commit suicide. Stuff like that shows up and undermines key themes and plot points. They even did best girl Neiru dirty. I’d still call it an interesting watch, but this is, ahem, a low- priority show. If you’re hankering after a surreal magical-girls show, go watch Flip Flappers instead.
  • Shadows House: It’s not often that we get gothic horror anime and I’m pleased that this one in particular turned out so well. What really hooked me to the series was cheerful ol’ Emilico. She cuts through the legitimately disturbing machinations of the titular manor with her quick thinking and boundless optimism. Her positivity helps balance out the creepiness, and sometimes helps enhance the creepiness. Kate is also magnificent in her role as the more level-headed and shadow-powered part of the duo. Also have to give a shout out to my fave hot-blooded shadow boy John. Really, all the characters are entertaining in their own right. I also like how the mysteries of the Shadows House are slowly rolled out throughout the series, and like with any good mystery, sometimes the answers come with more questions. Seriously, some of them still need answering. We need a sequel.
