Urban would work for Older Wiser Johnny

This is an outrage against Luminara!

At first, I thought "Hell yeah, he'll work as Johnny." But then I realized, he fits a lot better as Kano. Oh well, he's talented enough to make Johnny work for certain.

So... Adeline Rudolph will play Kitana.

I guess we can rule out Mileena being a clone of Kitana in this universe since Rudolph and Sisi Stringer look nothing alike, even before you get into the fact Kitana won't be played by Stringer.

Didn't the first movie make a lot of questionable decisions with the game cast?

The first movie has the vibe of a film that's ashamed of the material it's adapting. The entire film amounts to a two-hour justification for why Liu Kang can throw a fireball, as told through the lens of a Viewpoint OC who can hold the audience's hand and let them be broken in gently.

It's the kind of shallow take on the story that you'd expect from someone whose main exposure to the series is just watching people play Arcade Mode and going, "Wow, there sure are a lot of weird characters here."

So, no, I wouldn't expect much deep exploration of Kitana and Mileena's dynamic. I'm honestly not sure if the people making these films even knows that Mortal Kombat has a plot.

The movie reminded me of Terminator: Salvation of all things as behind the scenes, Christian Bale threw all of the director's plans for a loop when he had no interest in playing their OC and instead wanted to play John Connor because—why wouldn't he? One was the iconic part and one...wasn't.

Lewis Tan was pretty much perfect for Liu Kang OR Johnny Cage.

I would have been down for a Chinese Johnny Cage. The name even sounds like something that got Americanized/turned into a show name. Cole's power is similar to Johnny's too in that it increases his durability and gives him a fighting chance against enemies outside of his weight class.

Today I learned that the director of the film didn't want Mileena to wear a mask because he felt there were too many characters in masks.

This film had 16 characters, only three of whom wore masks (Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Kabal). But 4 would have been too much.

I wasn't bothered by the idea of Arcana but I feel making it the source of all human powers was a mistake. One Piece has Devil Fruits, Haki and various species with their own special abilities. Kano's Eye Beams and Jax's Artificial Limbs didn't necessarily have to be Arcana.

The editing of the film was very choppy, but I get the feeling they were focused on trying to emulate the look of the games and especially the bloody violence, which came at the expense of a coherent story. The biggest problem was discarding the tournament itself in what was supposed to be a ground-up retelling of the lore and characters. The tournament is vital to the games as it establishes the concept of the realms, lays ground rules for the characters to follow, the stakes of failure and a forward-thinking goal (fight through the bracket to victory). Later games could get away with dropping the tournament because it was story driven with the story of the Elder Gods, only getting more chaotic as things progressed. The Arcana material is fine, it helps unify disparate powers, but circumventing the first tournament is like getting ready for a basketball game only for the teams to get into a brawl in the locker room.

And it's sad too, cause I think Kanos' betrayal would have been significantly more impactful had he actually been in the tournament.

Comics are just words and pictures. You can do anything with words and pictures.

[up][up]Agreed that it worked when it was actual powers like fireballs and magic armor and whatnot, but applying it to explicit cybernetics like Kano and Jax's was a massive stretch and felt like they only did it out of misplaced desire to simplify things.

Even though Jax would have been exceedingly simple to explain—didn't even need to do it on-screen, really, just have him come back with the prosthetics after his organic arms got shattered, handwave it with some throwaway line about top-of-the-line military tech.

Mortal kombat unlike superhero genre never spend too much time exactly about the source of the power, neither like anime or japanise fighting games focus on what that entails: they have power and that is that, usually handwave with "they are gods, chi, demons, wizard, etc" or other like erronr who are just that good with guns.

But arcana look like and atempt to simplify thing and to said "why this chararter enter the tournament" in a sort of "you are special" kind of things

The game never explained a lot of those things because it never needed to. Until Deception gave some hints about it (and even then they don't really amount to more then just hints), it was never explained why Sub-Zero can use ice powers, the audience just accepts that he can.

Mortal Kombat takes place in a world where practicing martial arts can give you superpowers and that's fine. Liu Kang can make a fireball because he is very good at martial arts. Johnny Cage's whole dynamic is insisting that no, he really does glow green and move at insane speeds when he uses his martial arts, it's not CGI. Sub-Zero can make ice because he's a master of an ancient holy order whose martial art makes ice.

It's a world filled with cyborg, vampires, demons, gods, and sorcery, but where there is no force greater than Shaolin kung fu. That's just what the setting is. That's what you're adapting.

And it's fine. If people can accept a raccoon with a minigun, they can accept that kung fu teaches you to make a fireball.

And if we go to the comics, being a normal human who trains makes you almost as strong as Spider-man.

Even Saitama is a parody of that concept, the guy can do impossible things like jump from the moon to the earth, and the only explanation is "he trained a lot"

Dropping the tournament had to have been a pretty late decision, because in every draft of the script, the big free for all at the end was Mortal Kombat.

That would have been a terribly underwhelming tournament, honestly. It's for the best that they kicked the tournament into the sequel

I don't agree with a lot of decisions they made here but I am 100% onboard with that one.

For what I get the idea was he didnt want to repeat the tournament because the last movie did it already.

I feel the director would like to start right at MK 3 when the tournament stop becoming a thing

[up][up]Yeah, it was even a step down from Legacy, where they just ran around in the woods and had random encounters like in The Hunger Games.
