No, that would be more like Decoy Protagonist. (Kung Lao is a Sacrificial Lion).
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I mean, killing cole to give her wife a revenge arc often enter into friging because is give someone a sad backstory.
Killing cole will just make the entire previous movie a waste and it would reek of desperation that we see in comic books or the star wars movie "the last thing you dont like is false, now everything it how it should be".
replacing with kuaig liang just give us more weirdness: Bi han is hanzo enemy from 1600 and something and aparantly have live hundred of years with tsung magic or something, so suddenly his brother show up.....or they going to make him a decendent as well?.
Because if that is the case they just stole kung lao and goro storyline from MK 4 too.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Make Original the Character's death the Act 2 swerve. Firmly establish that anyone can die and Mortal Kombat is serious business. Have Shao Khan do it since Kung Lao isnt around to get his neck snapped.
Then either have him revive as a new Scorpion, or do something new like having the Lin Kuei bring him back as Cyber-Scorpion.
Or just keep him dead.

Scorpion will never be treated right in these live action movies, huh? In the original, he's a minion. Here, he's a MacGuffin.
Except here he gets to have the epic climactic fight, so it's a bit better.

Think is, in the MK 1 he WAS a minion, people often complain byt hanzo never really have a big and deep storyline for a LONG time, he does whatever bad guy does for first four games, try to hunt quan chi for others and only got something of a proper storyline.
Hanzo was never proper protagonist material and scorpion revenge and this movie just try to force where it dosent belong, people seen have a issue with it really.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Liu Kang was the Hero MK 11 even, the grand finale of the modern saga.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Liu kang used to have pretty much the same issue as cole in some sense: he was dull and boring, mostly because he didnt have any conflict or issue and being there just to save the world, while being the one who defeat the bad guy, by the time MKDA(deadly aliance) was out, he die and them mantle of protagonist kinda rotate: it was sort of kitana and kung lao in MKDA, Shujinko in MKD, Taven in MKA, Raiden in MK 9, cassie Cage and her team MKX and a mix between raiden and Liu kang in MK 11.
And hell even liu kang status is weird since plenty of time was till given to Cassie cage team and the cage family, showing that in a sense, MK have pretty much stop being the story of a single protagonist.

x6 Scorpion and Ryu both fall into the camp of "mascots that don't actually have much to do with the overall plot".
It's a staple of classic fighting games, tbh - or at least some of them. You can say the same thing about Mitsurugi. And you could make the case that while Kyo and Iori were involved in the earlier plots of KOF, they were less involved than a fair amount of other characters until very specific moments (not unlike Ryu in SF Alpha).
In a lot of older series, the "face" characters and the ones who most avidly engaged the plot were not always the same character.

Eh... like I said, Kyo wasn't so much the protagonist of most of the games of his era as much as a very visible character who did important things on rare occasions - while he did have more plot involvement than guys like Ryu, he was still very much cut from the same cloth. There were other characters who were more affected by the story during that time, like Leona.
KOF didn't start investing in a plot where the most visible face character of the games was also a proactive and clear central protagonist of those games' arcs until Ash, who even given that his era is over is still something of a relatively recent addition.

Oh for fucks sake just kill him off next movie it’s not that hard.
That’s exactly what GI Joe Retaliation did with Channing Tatum’s character to promote Dwayne Johnson’s character.
