In the #MeToo era, The '80s guy like Dan Fielding wouldn't last. He was a yuppie Jerk with a Heart of Gold who shamelessly chased anything with two X chromosomes.
They could give Dan some Character Development: a post-divorce Disco Dan single guy trying to navigate dating in the 21st century, his Yuppie ways now Lighter and Softer.

Harry and Christine could work.
As for Dan - it could go several ways:
- Dan settles down in The '90s only to split up. Divorce was common for yuppies, it was their demographic that brought it to the forefront of public consciousness.
- Dan (established in the series as a National Guard soldier) met someone in the Guard and for whatever reason she is The Lost Lenore.
- The irony of the genuinly nice guy Harry settling down with Christine while Dan -who, in his own words "dated the state" - never got married.
That last one makes the episode where Dan tells Harry this - while Dan is in the hospital and fearing his mortality - in universe Harsher in Hindsight.

I tried to walk like an Egyptian and now I need to see a Cairo practor....Perhaps they can bring back actress Karen Austin, and finally explain what happened to her character.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!Dan had various points where he considered settling down. I can see him as divorced, possible with a child, because I can easily see him trying that out for awhile and then ultimately failing at it. And really, I think he could work fine in the Me Too era; the inappropriate behavior he engaged in was limited to jokes, teasing, and innuendo, and that could easily be toned down. There was an episode where Christine's superior tried to coerce her into sex, and when the guy's behavior was ultimately revealed Dan was just as disgusted about it as everyone else. Dan has a lot of casual sex, but it's all consensual, and usually not with his co-workers.
Not sure how this can work without Harry (though all kinds of things work as streaming shows, so who knows?).

Actually, nice guy Harry settling down while lothario Dan does not would be the opposite of irony.

Well, I should say that's in universe irony - an 80's guy like Dan would be expected to land a Trophy Wife while a nice guy (who is actually nice) would be expected to marry late. Instead it's Dan who either married (and divorced) late or he's a Disco Dan trying to date in the 2020's.

As talked about here:

I'm a big fan of the original, but I dont know how this will work. Dan's character in particular will have to be changed drastically (though he'll still have his gift for snark I hope).
