Nah, man. That's from when he was already famous.
THIS will be about HOW he got famous.
In any case, Chris Evans is crazy excited about it.
(Slightly edited by myself.)
1. I didn't stop smiling through the ENTIRE pitch. Ear to ear.
2. Everyone can rest easy. And get very excited.
Trust me when I say that they REALLY know what they're doing over there. This one is gonna [be] special, and it doesn't step on a single thing. I can't even put my excitement into words. I smile every time I think about it. #LIGHTYEAR
I've been hearing that this Buzz is supposed to be an actual astronaut that existed in Andy's universe and that the toyline (and Star Command) was based on a fictionalized version of him.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).
Sadly R. Lee Ermey is no longer with us to do that voicework.

I wonder how many Toy Story-related mythology gags should we expect from this movie, if any at all.
As much as I love mythology gags, there might be such thing as too many? I think some guys complained that Monsters University had too many pointed at Monsters, Inc.?
Plus, the back of my mind REALLY wants Hamm to appear as an intergalactic space pig-guy, but I'm worried that people will think it's too similar to Pey'j from Beyond Good & Evil.
Argh, it drives me nuts how there's a lot of ways this movie could go down. And we have mixed messages out the wazoo!
Let's see. We have:
- Scenario 1: Based on what Evans has said regarding this movie being about "the real Buzz," that could mean in the world of Toy Story, there was a real astronaut named Buzz and the movie is about how his career inspired the Buzz Lightyear franchise that Buzz the Toy originated from. The thing is, we have never thought of the possibility of Buzz being a real person. Heck, the Buzz commercial from the first Toy Story explicitly calls him "the world's greatest superhero." Plus, Pixar movies always have a sense of being fantastical, so this scenario sounds a lot more grounded than the usual Pixar movie, at least on paper.
- Scenario 2: Or this really is more fantastical and it could go all Galaxy Quest meets The Martian meets Iron Man 1. An astronaut who works with real-life spacefaring logic gets stranded on an alien planet and is pushed into saving the galaxy, perhaps from a certain evil emperor while forging armor that lets him shoot lasers and fly?
- Scenario 3: There WAS a real astronaut named Buzz Lightyear, it DID inspire the Buzz Lightyear franchise, but as Real!Buzz grows weary of the fame and fortune, he DOES get thrust into action on an alien planet.
(I should say for the record that I'm more than a little excited about what direction this movie will go. I feel like Charlie when he's trying to uncover the secret of "Pepe Silvia.")
I think they'll take the Scenario 2 route. That is, it's an origin story for the Buzz Lightyear character for the Show Within a Show the toy in the Toy Story universe is based on.
Also, now that you brought up Galaxy Quest: Tim Allen both starred in that movie and played Buzz in Toy Story. Is that a coincidence or a Casting Gag?

Maybe a casting gag? Not sure.
I was meaning to point out how Tim Allen was in both Toy Story and Galaxy Quest, but I guess it got tuned out...
Watch Chris Evans be in a Galaxy Quest reboot a few years after Lightyear comes out.
(By the way, typing out those scenarios was a lot tougher than I thought. But hell yeah to me wanting to see Real!Buzz be some weird fusion of Mark Watney (the protagonist in The Martian) and Builds-A-Suit-Of-Armor-With-Scraps-In-A-Cave!Tony Stark.)

Note that the Film.Galaxy Quest page mentions Sigourney Weaver under Casting Gag (due to her role in Alien); but not Tim Allen.

Chris Evans Will Play the Original Buzz Lightyear in a New Pixar Adventure
Oh, and Buzz is voiced by Steve Rogers himself, Chris Evans. America’s ass has become America’s chin, ladies and gents.
Lightyear is expected to release June 17, 2022.
