Mina Parker

"Mr. D-Damien!" Mina exclaimed in alarm, rushing forward to prop him up and keep him standing. "D-Duane, help me c-carry him. We n-need to get him to th-the nearest hospital. Call 911 too, b-but I'm sure th-there's less cops a-around now that they a-all...well...d-died in the forest."

"There's a m-monster called the E-Everliving in the forest. I s-saw it in th-the scrying pool in my basement. It...p-possessed several police c-cars and then s-started killing the police!" she explained, more coherent now that she had something important to focus on. "It t-told Damien to d-deliver a message. If w-we save him, we m-might be able to l-learn more about it."

"Th-This is...this is a-all my fault," Mina sniffled, looking quite downtrodden and regretful.

Jayden

oh good she's alive

what did she see?

"Who are you texting?"

Jayden yelped and jumped back a little. Amy was standing in front of him, giving him a quizzical stare. "No, seriously, who are you texting? Did you make friends behind my back?"

"Uh...Heather." Technically the truth.

"Right." Amy clicked her tongue. "What're you two talking about?"

"Possible cult activity in the woods."

"...found another crazy, huh."

"Sure, sure," Jayden said absently, pushing past Amy and heading for the stairs. "Anyway, I have more research to do, so see ya."

First order of business was finding out who Azekred was. Might as well start simple; Jayden typed the name in the search bar and checked the results.

"Look inside yourself and to the stars; there, you will find your answers."

"I must admit that I don't really recall which side of the estate I was on but I don't recall entering any rooms besides the library. I mostly just meandered about the place, admiring the architecture. Upon reflection I guess that wasn't the most appropriate thing to do"

He grinned sheepishly, hopefully he would be able to attribute his behavior to inconsiderateness rather than malice. His cover-story was paper thin, but they seemed to be buying it nonetheless. He wondered if the Maid was anxious that he might discover Jackson's secret or because some other mystery hidden away in the depths of the Manor. For that matter, was she worried about the secret getting out because she might get fired, or out of concern for Jackson's wellbeing.

Duane

Duane promptly called up 911 on speaker phone, urgently so, thinking about how in the world they were going to explain that a gigantic monstrosity called "The Everliving" killed off like 19 cops and then beat to shit the last one left. He got his answer when he got on the line surprisingly quickly. "P-Police...police, we uh, we have an officer who just showed up here...he's been beaten really badly. We'll take him to the hospital, but there's...there's stuff going on at the forest—-"

A nasally voice on the other end responded, "And...what is this officer's name?"

"D-Damien?" Duane did not like how weirdly calm the guy on the other end was being. Something seemed off.

He got an answer and a confirmation, "There is no officer by the name of Damien Winston in Sandfield PD. I'll have you know, young man, that clowning around and prank calling the police is a crime you can be arrested for."

Duane paused, looking at the badly wounded Damien, and then at his phone relaying this.

The man on the other side responded, "Good night...you fucking brat." And thus ended the phone call. Duane for a moment sat there, looking at Mina, then looking at their cop friend, mouthing the words "what the fuck?"

The White Estate

The maid seemed to scrutinize James quite deeply, trying to see if she could spot any telltale signs of a lie or holes in his logic. She tilted her head to the side slightly and then scowled, "Alright. I can't see anything wrong in there. Young Master Jackson has a lot of private business he wants to remain private. If this is all, please refrain from any further disruptive activity."

She looked at Kyle a moment, and then back at James.

It was obvious she did not want him around any more.

Mina Parker

"...Whoever th-that was, that w-wasn't an officer," Mina concluded, eyes wide open and forgetting her tears with the focus she was putting into helping Damien stop his bleeding. "You o-only said his name was D-Damien. Not Damien W-Winston. That was a-an impostor. Wh-Whoever it was, going to the p-police is no longer an o-option."

"Look up wh-where the nearest h-hospital is on your phone, I-I'll be right back," Mina said, running behind her house and rummaging around in a shed for a bit. She came out with two bikes, and a rather large wagon was hooked to one of them. "Load D-Damien into the w-wagon, and I'll p-pedal my way th-there. My mom t-taught me. I-If you want to keep up w-with me, Duane, th-then hope to God you c-can also ride."

As soon as Damien was loaded into the wagon, Mina would ride off. It would be up to Duane whether he wanted to try and follow her on the extra bike.

That had gone rather better than expected. James walked to the mansion's entrance and took out his phone to contact Dave, looking at the mass of texts he had received the past hour, James realized he had missed quite a bit That however, could wait another moment, he texted Dave

"Maid doesn't suspect anything, managed to convince her that I'm harmless"

"Where are you right now?"

He then opened the group chat

"Was questioned by maid at White Estate but managed to convince her I wasn't up to anything."

"Jayden what did you tell your brother about me? He clearly thinks I am mad."

"Do we know if Mina is alright?"

Dave DuVale, Remember Me?

Before all the scrying and texting happened and after Reiji's annoyed response, Dave had some thinking to do. He couldn't answer Reiji's question honestly (not just because of the supernatural shit; saying "I was told to leg it and didn't pay any attention to where I was going" wouldn't have reflected well on him), so he had to think of a lie...and he was good at that.

"Well, I was tasked by a friend of mine to deliver this book (he pulled the Azekred book out just enough for Reiji to see that it was a book, and not the title or cover) to a friend of mine. Usually I would use my car for such a task, but it's in the shop. The steering's jank. So I walked, and I'm sure you can appreciate a man's desire for their literature to arrive quickly. As it happens, he just texted me to let me know that he found a copy in his basement and no longer requires my services. This is good news, but his timing was unfortunate and I crashed into you. Don't text and run, I suppose." He said all this in a very calm, not-that-aloof demeanor.

There was a brief pause. "Actually..." He analyzed Reiji's appearance and made a decision before dropping his fake calmness and returning to cool guy mode. "You know what?" He pulled out an index card with his name and phone number written on it. "I'll let you in. You ever need to deliver something or be driven somewhere or some shit..." He extended his pinky and thumb and held it to his ear as a phone symbol and then clicked his tongue.

Coincidentally, that was when his real phone rang. Not wanting to deny this man an opportunity to accept his offer, but also not wanting to force anything on him, he gave Reiji a look, held out the card with his left hand, and interrupted his ringtone (which was Don't Fear The Reaper) with his right. A glance at the caller ID told him this was...

"Hey Ben. I can't talk now, I'm in the middle of something."

<<Alright but I got a thing for you can you do it when you get the chance?>>

"Yeah, sure. What is it?"

<<Yeah my aunt got sick I need you to deliver a thing.>>

"Dude, why is everyone in your family always sick? Have you ever gotten sick off of one of them?"

<<I don't think so but maybe I'm asymptomatic or something and I'm spreading it. This is gonna sound kinda weird but I kind of like the atmosphere sick people give off you know? The bed, the voic—>>

"...yeah, that's weird. What's your aunt's address?"

<<522 Radial Avenue.>>

"Cool. Bye."

Beep!

Dave turned to look at Reiji again.

Suggested wine pairing: pinot noir.

Earlier

Reiji felt like he was caught up in a storm.

"Uh, you're not..."

"Wait...who are you even—-"

"How do you have that?"

And how did he do all of this in such a calm tone of voice!? Reiji almost couldn't even manage to get angry at all about this or say much more due to the tone.

This guy came running up and barreled into him, knocking the sense out of Reiji momentarily, and then he showed a book he probably shouldn't really have, and then started talking about something. The purple clad young man would've raised some sort of objection - some kind of threat even - but the whole thing seemed to occur too fast and Dave quickly ended up talking over Reiji.

Hey, hey! Wait...wait!

And then the guy just...went on the phone, and after he was done assumed Reiji was gonna be along now too. "I-I...fine...fine! You know what, fine. I'll go with you."

Reiji contemplated his options, Okay. Okay. So...okay, an index card. He wants to what, deliver stuff for me or something? Okay. Okay. Alright. But this could be...well. It's not a good thing. It's like I'm getting dragged into something I never asked for again. But he has that book...maybe I could get my "in" with the others if I just—-yeah! Yeah! This could mean good things going forward for Reiji of the Million Spells!

Reiji promptly wrote down his number and started walking off. Things could be looking up for him! He was so distracted with his ideas that he didn't even see the stop sign coming.

"Ouchie-Ouch!" He picked himself up quickly, "I'm okay!"

Mina and Duane

Well, this escalated even further.

Duane got on the bike to follow as Mina started leading the way off toward the hospital. It was a long way though, and if the police were compromised by...someone...then that meant that any passing police cars were going to be no longer something they could count on. They'd be spying most likely. And considering that whoever that was had the resources of the police, they likely had his cellphone number now.

As they rode their bikes there, Damien's prone body in the back in the wagon, a car started to pull up on the road into sight...

In contrast to the car Kellon Nyczus drove, it was blatantly a donated, patched up piece of work. A truck that had taped up wheels and patched together bodywork. One of the doors didn't even match with the rest of the truck. Driving it was Corpheus Scyllo - who immediately started pulling to a stop, getting out slowly and with the assistance of his cane.

"Mina? Duane?" He asked in a concerned tone, "What's going on?"

"H-He stumbled up t-to my house, f-from the direction of the w-woods," Mina explained, stopping to check on Damien in the meantime. "I f-flew my drone over th-the place and f-found lots of suspicious p-people gathered a-around eight totems. W-We just recently tipped o-off the police, so th-they went to investigate, and..."

"There a-aren't any others that c-came with Damien," she whispered. "They all m-might be...d-dead. We tried c-calling 911, but when D-Duane mentioned that D-Damien was hurt, the person answering s-said that there was no D-Damien Winston working as a p-police officer. Duane d-didn't say his l-last name, so the p-person on the line was...a-an impostor."

"I c-can't stick around for too l-long!" Mina exclaimed, starting to panic now that the shock of the situation was getting to her. "I have to t-take Damien to the h-hospital." With that, she started trying to pedal faster and further than ever.

Mina and Duane

"Yeah, we gotta make sure this guy gets the right care." Duane said as he started cycling...

However Corpheus for his part moved after the two of them, only just managing to keep behind them - obviously not suited for this due to his cane and advanced age. The old man shouted after them, "Wait! If Damien truly is in such poor condition, if you take him to the hospital and there is such a conspiracy at work, the hospital will notify the police! And then they'll be able to do God knows what to poor Damien!"

This made Duane stop for a moment - remembering how hospitals usually did end up contacting the police after something like this happened...

"I...we don't h-have any other o-options," Mina murmured, looking between Damien, Duane, and Father Corpheus. "If w-we don't get him p-proper medical care, he m-might die to his w-wounds...and he s-said he was sent to d-deliver a message before he c-collapsed. Wh-Whatever it is, I'm h-hoping that he w-won't die before he c-can present his evidence of s-suspicious happenings."

"The c-conspirators feel like th-they want to leave D-Damian in the d-dust, though. Th-They want him to d-die, so they didn't s-send help to take him t-to the hospital. But if th-there's really no other a-alternative..." she continued for a moment, hesitating. "Wh-What do you p-propose we do, Father C-Corpheus? If it d-doesn't work out, we can always s-smuggle him b-back out of the h-hospital as soon as he gets f-first aid..."

Duane and Mina

Corpheus turned for a moment and cupped his chin, as if contemplating something, and then looked back at the two of them, "I believe I have a solution. In and among my flock are doctors, healers, and medics. All I need to do is make the relevant call, and they will answer, I am confident. There are even those who have served overseas as medics who now rely upon our Church for dwelling and assisted living."

Duane looked between Mina and Corpheus - it was a really interesting option. Plus it would limit the ability of the fake police to get involved.

Meanwhile...

Jayden would not find much of anything on Azekred on google.

It seemed aside from Zayufur showing up in a crime scene, there wasn't much about these beings.

Like they were concealed until very recently.

...well, that had gotten him nowhere. Looked like these guys were much stealthier than he thought. When Jayden got to his room, he sat down at his desk and pulled his journal from his backpack. Stealthy enough to hide from Google...not stealthy enough to hide from me.

As he was writing Azekred's information down, his phone buzzed with a few texts. He checked it, frowned a bit at the one directed to him, and sent off a reply.

Jayden

However if Jayden looked back at the screen, strangely enough he would find his attention grabbed by a seemingly random article. It was a description of some kind of book that supposedly was a translation into modern English of an account of some English Knights, recorded by a monk, during the time when the Vikings were attempting to conquer England.

It was the strangest sort of allure. It almost seemed personalized...

Mina and Duane

Duane for his part just stared, first at Mina and then at Corpheus, and then he turned and asked in a harsh whisper, "Are you...are you sure we can—-" He was shut up however when he heard a sound that should've been reassuring. That should've made him feel more safe.

A police car driving up the road and slowing down as it approached.

The officer driving the vehicle was not one Duane recognized - resembling some bearded, stocky belligerent sort wearing more militarized clothes. The window scrolled down and he seemed to glare at them, scrutinizing. He grinned at first when he saw Mina and Duane, as if anticipating something...but then scowled when he saw Corpheus.

He scrolled the window back up and kept driving. Duane held his breath all the way until the officer and his car were out of eyeshot. And then he exhaled and looked at Corpheus, "...Alright, I believe you. Let's head over to...wherever it is you're set up."

"Y-Yeah. Come on. L-Let's get g-going," Mina stuttered, wilting a little from the strange cop's glare and piling into the car along with Duane. "Th-This whole s-situation...feels rather fishy...and s-scary..."

"B-But do you know a-anything about the m-monster, Father?" she continued to ask. "And wh-why did that person l-look at you like...like th-that? Like he h-hated you..."

As he was writing, Jayden's eyes flicked back to his phone in case anyone else had texted and saw—

He blinked. An article. About a book. About a translation of an account by some knights. He felt...drawn to it. Wanted to click the link and read the article. Jayden's finger twitched as he reached out to tap the link and head to—

Wait a minute.

Jayden blinked again. Since when had that sort of thing ever interested him? The only cool parts of history were the parts where they met all the ghosts and gods and such. That he'd been so close to clicking that link was...

He quickly copied the link, then headed to the group text.

okay I think I might've almost been hypnotized

And Heather would...only see a screen.

Explaining the history therein. The book was summarized as including an account of a monk and a crew of knights as they fought a particularly disturbing band of vikings. Supposedly the "Crelnach Warband" as they were called was led by a pair of Vikings - Korir "The Manslayer" Bjordisson and Wenillro "The Helmsplitter" Bleakblade.

There was nothing truly unusual about it outside of a few odd mentions.

Such as the fact that supposedly, King Harald of Norway cast out Korir and Wenillro for their "excessive barbarism", as well as their "horrific religion".

And out of the two of them, Korir made several attempts on the life of King Aelfred the Great and the king's young daughter.

Mina and Duane

"Ah, yes, and apologies for the interruption." As the two of them got in the car, Corpheus looked out toward the woods. He stated in a rather dark tone, "The Everliving is a monstrosity that lives out there. He is why you should never go out there. Near as my guess is, the cults back in the day summoned him up, and couldn't ever manage to send him back. Something happened recently, but now he's back and worse than he's ever been."

Corpheus drove off toward his church - which was really just a warehouse that his congregation bought via crowdfunding. There was some admirable work done to make it more presentable though, on a shoestring budget. A wooden cross fixed to the roof, a ramshackle podium inside, and the doors cleaned up and the windows given a new look via a budget equivalent of stained glass.

Not nearly as pretty as some other Churches, but it was what they could afford.

Before long he made the relevant calls in the car outside, and asked, "And...what are you children doing poking around there that you would see the Everliving stomping around out there?"

Jayden - A Trip Back

Jayden for his part would, the minute he looked at it, start to see some odd things.

The knights depicted on the cover started to seem more prominent. Somehow he could taste the dust in the air, even though he was alone in his room. He would find himself grasping for his sword at his side, even though he was never one to wield a weapon.

And then the chair was there no more.

And Jayden was falling through what seemed like a deep, dark watery abyss, looking up at a field of gold in which he could see himself at his computer.

Jayden fell through an ornate stained glass window depicting a knight clutching a sword holding off an armored figure with some sort of sparking, powerful looking claw and wielding an axe.

...

...

And then Jayden woke up in the middle of the old medieval church. His body about six years older than it should be. In different clothes than it should be. His features more stern and with a slight scar on jawline, red hair more disheveled. The world seemed dim in some way, like he was looking back at a moving version of an old picture.

He would see his sword by the side of his bed, and his armor neatly arranged by it as well...

Wait.

Mina Parker

This was all wrong.

Mina never said that the club members had seen the Everliving, only that Damien had mumbled it in a delirium when he made his way to her house. To say more that contradicted herself would only end up exposing their entire operation. It was better to stick to her established story.

A test, then?

With how much his church members were willing to obey him, it seemed almost suspicious.

"The c-club never went into the w-woods," she protested, because they had indeed only stayed on the fringes of the forest. "And D-Damien was describing it, s-saying it spoke to h-him, told him its n-name. W-We haven't seen th-the thing, n-nor do we ever want to e-encounter whatever's h-hiding in the woods."

This was also true. The club had never seen the Everliving as a collective, only Mina had. "None of u-us are going to take u-unnecessary risks w-with what happened t-to Tom!" Mina finished, a little out of breath, and this was yet another half-truth. The would only take necessary risks.

With that established, Mina resumed staring out of the car's windows, starting to scroll through her phone and reading the article that Jayden had sent. Nothing strange was to be found in it, except for more signs of a bigger conspiracy. With that, she tried to search some more on the same website while she waited in the car.
