In English “tanned” connotes a fairer skin color that darkened due to exposure to light. Thus it’s more appropriate to call people with naturally brown skin, well, brown-skinned.

“Moreno” would definitely refer to naturally brown skin.

Yeah, it's a little bit unintuitive. "Tan skin" could be used to describe a skin tone like Kaho's, though I don't think it's generally used. But "tanned" suggests that there was a tanning process.

It's been fun.

[up]x2 & [up] Thank you, I did go check a couple online dictionaries, and got some similar info. Can we just say I took an artictic license with my chant, and that I lernt form a mistake, and leave the whole like that? (and maybe one day, we will get a swimmer/fisherwoman/wildness girl (take your pick) girlfriend who is actually tanned).

I guess swarthy could also be used but I'm admittedly not sure if its an okay term.

Volume 13 extras are out.

Ahko has adapted to Kishika’s infantilism fetish. Best supportive GF, seriously.

Never got the appeal of smoking girls but it’s there for those who like that.

Big Cheese was not ready for Iku hahaha.

Baby Momoha was freaking adorable and a case study for why younglings shouldn’t be exposed to gacha games and lootboxes.

Ch. 133

We now know everyone's birthdays.

There are some fun ones like

Suu's 1/23

Naddy 2/11 (National Foundation Day in Japan)

3Mi's (with mi an alternative way of saying 3) 3/3

Nano's 3/14 (pi)

Momoha's 10/8 (108 earthly desires, her intro. chapter is Ch. 108)

And Meme and Kishika randomly sharing a birthday with each other.

Figures the birthdays would have a bunch of jokes in there.

Meanwhile, Eira meets the rest of the girlfriends. Momiji is beyond cultured, as always. I liked how the spun her fears of the girlfriends - Kusuri's not scary, but chemical weapons sure are. Meme's Instant Transmission, and of course, Kishika's baby mode. So that was about as great as expected.

[up][up] Birthday paradox. Not sure if Nakamura-sensei knew about that, but it would be absolutely amazing if that was the reason Meme and Kishika shared birthdays.

I love these chapters that are just joke after joke after joke. We all expected Shizuka to scare Eira, but we sure didn’t expect baby-mode Kishika to do the same. And Eira thinks it’s a secret weapon. Hahaha.

Eira holding the honor of having a birthday was hilarious. Does that mean we’ll get birthday chapters in the future? Is time finally going to move forward?

Eira also worried that she’s joining some sort of cult, but it’s fine, she can defeat the vast majority of them. I am going to enjoy having this meathead around.

Oh yeah, she's gonna be fun. And she provides much-needed offensive support to Rentarou's Family!

Why no December girlfriend? We good month, but been forsaken >:( Sidenote: huh, I never noticed there wasn't an angry emoji in this website until now.

But seriously, its nice having birthday dates for the girls (and Rentarou), but I do find it odd there not being one born in the last month of the year.

We all suspected that Kusuri was carrying lethal bio weapons, but it's nice having a visual confirmation so it won't be a surprised when she gets arrested.

Also, we now know what set Iku in her life path watching Team Gaki no Tsukai tv specials, and seeing Tanaka geting Thai Kicked [lol].

Finally, I was right about Shizuka being too precious to be hurt though being a literal featherweight was a new piece of trivia, and the promised of the next chapter being about her has me pumped.

There doesn’t seem to be anyone with a July birthday, so it’s not only December being left out.

I feel like Shizuka has somehow been losing mass since her introduction. Diet’s working too well.

Chapter 134: This is serious.

No, really. This is a decidedly non-wacky chapter where Shizuka’s abusive mom finally makes an appearance. Shizuka telling the Family her phone was broken when in reality her mom took it away is uncomfortably reminiscent of various domestic abuse cases I’ve seen IRL.

So yeah, interested to see how Rentarou and Shizuka handle this.

Ch. 134

Oh we're addressing this again.

This really shows that Nano and Shizuka's friendship/relationship is among the strongest this manga has to offer. Nano was able to tell something was off with Shizuka and Shizuka trusted Nano first to share what her relationship with her mother is like.

Shizuka's Mom looks so dead inside.

Yeah, have to give props to Nano for noticing something was off with Shizuka. Her developing empathy has always been one of the highlights of the series. On that note, I like her little collection of stuff in her room: her picture with Rentarou from their first date, the toy moon and the mini-clothes that Meme knit for her, and the keychain.

Well then, I was expecting some cute hijinks, by having Shizuka's phone go a bit haiwire, making her speak incorrectly (think of Narancia in the shark/tongue arc), after which she would have some character developement, and be able to speak a little bit more by herself but mostly still using her phone (sidenote: Wonder how they will adapt that in the anime, will thay make her voice be the voice to speech app?, if so, it would be funny that girlfriend 3 and 4 are going to sound a bit like robots for different reasons).

But facing reality, now its serious time: I had completely forgotten thtat the origin of Shizuka's situation was due to her mother hitting her and calling her strange, but it was there in her introduction. It was actually a bit tough reading this chapther with that in mind, but it was still very nice seeing Nano and Shizuka demonstrating their bonds, since (in comparison to Hakari and Karane, which always have been more joke-y/fan service-y) multiple times its been showed they bring the best out of each other, so Nano noticing her hidden distress was heart-warming.

Even so, I do wonder which direction the story is going to take, because, even if the mother had good intentions for being harsh with Shizuka, like not wanting to have problems in the future due to her communication problems, the fact she physically hurt her daughter due to it mkaes everything more harsh. While it would be nice to have a simple and happy conclusion, at the very least I hope Rentarou does give her some harsh words (and/or, in an scenerio in which she sees the whole Rentarou family to show her Shizuka isn't alone or anti-social, Hahari in serious mode could also be someone who could join in telling her off) so she realizes how much of a horrible person she was by hurting Shizuka.

Chapter 135: We could have spared ourselves all this drama if you'd brought Shizuka to a speech therapist.

That said, Nakamura-sensei was able to make me understand Shizuka's mother. She's not evil, she only tried to help Shizuka in the wrong way. Which is not uncommon for RL parents, either. It's great that Rentarou managed to change her mind, and now Shizuka and her mom can face each other with sincerity.

Oh, and Shizuka Mama, Rentarou is well aware there are innumerable types of girls in the world. Well aware.

Good job Nano teaching Shizuka how to efficiently use her mouth haha.

[up] Last part of your comment: raises eyebrow lke the Rock Oh my, did she now? wink(turned into Hakari for a second there).

Secondly: Wow, so Shizuka's mom could have avoided all this if she had known about Stephen Haking then, huh?

Jokes aside, like fillerdude (up) said, Shizuka's mom attempts to fix her daughter without getting professional help are what made the problem worse, plus, its obvious she also needs therapy on her own, since its obvious she has some self-worth issues she is proyecting into Shizuka (she might think thather hubby not being around much means men get tired of problematic women, or something like that). And, its also evident Shizuka resents her mom, since even after Rentarou gave her speech app, it took until now for both of them to actually have a conversation (probably since Shizuka was afraid of her mothers response, which was well founded).

On a lighter note, but still a bit heavy its funny how Rentarou could have proven her wrong in multiple ways thanks to her harem, but its probably for the best not bringing your 20+ girlfriends to their parents when the mood is heavy (though I still want Hahari to have some choice words with Shizuka's mom).

And finally, in a bit of dark comedy Rentarou is right, he will love Shizuka for the rest of her life...

because the moment he stops loving her and making her happy, she dies (thanks to the multiple soulmates curse that was explained at the beginning of the series).

Yeah, all things considered I think the portrayal of Shizuka and her mother's strained relationship isn't too far off from how such things happen in reality.

Well that was nice. Shizuka's mother had a very flawed approach but at least I can believe she had some care for her daughter. Still feels like a massive overreaction on her part, though.

Now please give us more Nano Shizu moments, Nozawa.

Nozawa's art is fantastic for this chapter.

Rentarou's angry faces aren't too comical or gag-like, but really show the frustration and fury he feels.

The page that had Shizuka's crying face which brought the life back into her mother's dead eyes was excellent.

Very solid pair of chapters, I think. I'm really impressed that the series consistently manages such strong character work even with the huge number of characters and the wackier gag-filled chapters.

I do find myself hoping we'll get another long-form arc like the Rescue Hakari arc at some point. It would be great to see what various "strike teams" of girlfriends could do for a big plan.

It's been fun.

[up][up][up] And it's distressing how common those kinds of overreactions happen in real life.

[up][up] You're right, we should also be commending Nozawa-sensei for properly delivering the seriousness of the situation.

[up] Right?! The character work is sub-freaking-lime. None of the girls feel particularly neglected, which is an amazing feat.

It's really kind of amazing how something as basic as a panel with Mimimi going "naturally!" still feels like... a valid contribution, rather than just a mandatory check-in panel (compare the stock "shocked reaction face cut-in" from shonen series with big casts).

It's been fun.
fillerdude Since: Jul, 2010
#325: May 1st 2023 at 8:29:57 AM

I'd say it's because there's not only one singular background event. There's a lot of stuff happening there. The girls are all obviously doing their own thing, which makes them feel more alive and capable of existing outside of the plot of the week.

With that example you mentioned about action shonen, it feels a lot more trite because they're usually all just reacting to the same thing and you don't need to see 16 shocked faces to know that the event in question is, indeed, shocking.

Also forgot to comment on your "strike team" suggestion, and I dunno why but it made me think of a heist haha.
