Can you imagine if Biden won Kentucky, though? The home state of the Evil Turtle?

...Actually, why do you call him that? I feel like there's a story here.

If you've played XCOM 2 then you'll no doubt think of The Faceless when it comes to Kentucky's hated senator and Senate Majority Leader. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a shapeshifting alien.

Why did some parts of Indiana and Kentucky close their polls early? Is it standard?

And it begins...

So long as it looks like we're winning Georgia I'm going to feel confident in Biden's victory. There's no way we're winning Indiana or Kentucky (although we're currently in the lead in Kentucky from what I'm seeing), and Virginia and Vermont should be on lock. So really, it's Georgia that I'm focused on.

It’s a time zone thing, same as with Florida. Their polls close at 6pm local time, which means either 6pm eastern time or 7pm eastern time.

@Dingo, if the polls aren't off, Biden should pick up at least 1 of North Carolina, Florida or Georgia. Any 1 of the 3 would put him in a excellent position to hit 270 comfortably.

The next two hours will be key.

You know, sometimes I've joked that if there really was an Illuminati/Annunaki/whatever controlling everything from behind the scenes and trying to set up a world government, that might actually be an improvement over the current situation; either that, or they're trying but just doing a really miserable job. :V

[up]x2 They're a part of the first States to close their Ballots. Obviously as the night goes on more and more States will start counting, but Georgia is the real first Swing State we get to see.

Also sadly, Blue-Tucky is gone and Trump has his lead back. McGrath still has her lead but that's going to evaporate soon too...

With polls closing the first few calls are coming in, just the obvious ones right now, Indiana, Kentucky and Vermont being called as you’d expect. Obviously there are relevant down-ballot races in both Kentucky and Vermont, which may take some time.

According to the Yahoo tracker: Trump's won Kentucky and Biden's won Vermont (with 0% reporting tongue). Both expected results.

NBC's called Indiana for Trump, said Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia are too early to call. [1]

Oh yeah, I feel like this is a dumb question, but - urbanized areas logically take longer to count votes than rural ones, right?

But 538 didn't have either of those at 100%!

Cancel Nate Silver!!!

I suppose this is when we learn if Biden can make headway in traditional red states, or if his efforts will be only bear fruit in swing states.

Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, my home state, just got called the instant the polls closed. That only happens for blowouts, and he barely scraped by in 2014.

Yes urban areas take longer to count, simply due to the higher number of votes cast.

CNN is comparing vote count in Florida counties between now and 2016 and Biden is doing better number wise than Hilary did.

Not necessarily this year, though. Urban areas tend to be heavily Democratic, the same group that voted more by mail. Some states count mail-in-ballots early and dump them into the results as soon as polls close. So some of the early results could actually be skewed toward Democrats.

Florida seems encouraging right now, as Biden isn't that far behind Trump - according to CNN's model - and they haven't even counted the big cities yet.

Wait for somewhere to have the county in full, remember that we’re going to get plenty of blue-shift and red-shift over the night due to mail-in-ballots.

Joe Biden is now ahead in Florida! I repeat, JOE BIDEN IS NOW AHEAD IN FLORIDA!

Apparently Trump is doing ~10% worse everywhere then in 2016, and Biden is doing phenomenal in many traditionally Republican parts of Florida. If Florida is called for Biden (which won't happen for another hour anyways), I think we win.

Far to early to determine anything, not all voting areas are counted at the same time.

Florida is counting fast though, it seems to be already at 40% of the count done.
