Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

We've already locked the discarded draft. This conversation is becoming a little popcorn-like and should cool down.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Since there isn't a dedicated place to ask this, I'll ask here.
Today's featured trope is Silver Fox, and I just learned today is apparently "Gorgeous Grandma Day"
. Was that intentional? If so, very funny
Despite what you said, I'm looking at the discarded drafts list right now and still see the restore option. Is the restore option visible to anyone else?
It's locked on my end...
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIt's locked for us now, but it wasn't when we checked earlier. One imagines the mods got to it late or something.
Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.Yes, it was. Most of the featured tropes I've queued up have had that sort of relationship to obscure holidays.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I'm very, very sorry for all the trouble I've caused in the Forum Games section. But even if you ever lift the ban, I promise never to break any more rules there.
They are actually banned from there, yes. Mostly for partaking in forum games without following the rules of the thread you were partaking in.

Yes, I do apologize for not following the rules of certain Forum Games threads. Guess I won't return there even if you lift my ban.

I've been thinking about the understaffing problem, rereading some posts (mainly pages 75 and 76), and have some things to say. The admins are communicating very little with the users, so I have little choice but to try to piece together what's going on.
As You Know, it seems to be generally agreed here that TV Tropes is understaffed, and that too much work is poured onto too few of the users. Instead of throwing more mods at the problem, a better, more long-term approach would be to ease the workload. Make the systems more streamlined and just take a look at the wishlist for inspiration, so work can be done more efficiently.
Only the admins can work on TV Tropes and fix these systems. But we don't see much of what they do. Supposedly, the website hasn't been updated since 2019
yet we've gotten some improvements and bug fixes
since then, announced informally by forum mods. I checked the recent edits and forum posts of the eight admins
but most aren't visibly active on TV Tropes. (if I recall correctly, all but one haven't posted or edited since 2019, if at all.) We don't know the plans of the staff, which makes it hard for users to understand where the website is going, or how to plan for wiki development. And That's Terrible.
We need to consider why the admins are being silent. All of the admins are employees of Proper Media
, who have limited resources to allocate to TV Tropes. But it doesn't explain why they don't even take a few hours out of a month or a year to try and communicate with users. I imagine It would benefit them as a business to communicate with customers, but for some reason they just aren't doing that.
My guess is that this is either an organization or a policy issue within the company. It seems the only way to reliably get info about admins here is to ask the mods. If a line of communication can be opened, I hope we will get more info on the lack of communication and the planned future of TV Tropes. In addition, I and many other users have ideas for improving TV Tropes, and it would be excellent to know that we're being heard.
Seriously offtopic, but the Proper website for me is completely broken.

Okay, I'm not sure if moderators are able to talk about this, but I'll go ahead and make a brief, unofficial statement to clarify things.
TV Tropes is owned, under the brand Tropes, Inc., by the same people who owned Proper Media, which is an advertising platform. Proper Media was recently acquired by another firm, but TV Tropes was not part of that deal and remains with the current owners.
There is going to be some delay as they go through all the paperwork to finalize the deal, but we are promised more attention devoted to this site once that's over.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Assuming they're being truthful, fantastic news!

Yes, this is awesome to hear!
Oh, that makes sense.
I love that the company is called "Tropes, Inc." They missed the opportunity to use Trope Co., though!
I'm assuming that after that's settled, the admins will have more time to work on the engineer system if that'll fix the previously mentioned understaffing issue.

I got a rock for Halloween.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the engineer thing. I don't mean to poke you, mods, but how is it going so far, and have the admins given any other updates?
I wish I had known about this thread earlier.
I'd like to know what possible reason there is for this post
getting thumped.
For context, we were discussing Sia's horrid ableist movie Music and a poster suggested she "stick to songs". I replied saying that her voice was awful and that she should perhaps just publish terrible books from here on in. No reason was given for the thump.

Do not spare the feelings of those who would not spare yours.I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it is because it is a personal attack on the creator, rather than criticism of their work, and we have been having problems with that sort of behaviour in the past, especially where Youtubers and Twitter are involved.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest times...seriously? I only criticized her voice, not her character, and the post directly above calls her a hack. Another post indirectly called her childish. How are thsose not personal attacks yet "Sia can't sing" is?

Do not spare the feelings of those who would not spare yours.

I think the most damning thing about this particular incident is that it wasn't only a "stealth launch", it was taking a draft that was already discarded, restoring it, and launching it immediately despite having a vast negative bomb count and a consensus that it wasn't fixable without being redone from the ground up. And then crosswicking it as though that's somehow going to stop it from being unlaunched.
I don't think that's a misunderstanding of the rules as they're trying to claim. If there's a more definitive TLP equivalent of "Fuck all of you," I don't know what it is.
Maybe it was technically a "stealth launch" but this specific set of circumstances makes this actually seem worse than a rogue launch. It has the appearance of knowingly and willingly breaking the rules.
