Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

I'm still doing behind-the-scenes stuff, but Edit Banned draws on my mental resilience quite a bit and gets interrupted by RL. Honestly it's a job none of us would prefer to do.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Personally, I'm not super worried about Edit Banned. It gets back up by like week at most and handling it seems to be something that doesn't need to be rushed. And clearing it out often goes by fast anyway. I'm more concerned about the Locked Pages thread (which involves a lot of editing) and other stuff like ensuring somebody is on to handle potentially urgent reports on ATT.

Hello. I'm sorry to bother y'all, but I'd like to appeal my Forum Games ban.
A few months ago, I was banned from Forum Games and Yack Fest due to some extremely rude and out-of-line remarks I made about Fighteer during the locking of the Trash Heap on Yack Fest. I was told that I could appeal those bans by a certain date — April 19th for the Yack Fest ban, and July 19th (today) for the Forum Games ban. If you recall I already made an appeal for the Yack Fest ban
in April, and now I'd like to do the same for my Forum Games ban. I cannot appeal in the Edit Banned/Suspended thread due to technical reasons, so I was told
to appeal in this thread instead.
Rest assured, I have taken the advice of the moderators concerning my behavior to heart. I will not act that way again.
Trope Editor (he/him)SNIP per
; I overlooked that.

Their posts state that they do not have the ability to post in Edit Banned.
Correct. Both of you are officially released.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Okay... no idea if this is the right place to put this, but someone I know has recently had their account denied on the basis that they already have an account. The only response they received upon contacting Fighteer was that it seemed that they had a previous account. (Not trying to rush Fighteer, I know they're busy.)
That said, this person doesn't have a previous account to their knowledge. They have no previous account in any of their saved passwords and they have never made any edits to the site.
Their current handle is Catermelon, for what it's worth, and I'd either like more context for this denial or the enabling of their account.
Or in the event that they do already have an account, having that account's handle revealed to us would also be acceptable since they do not remember it.

Does this person live in your household? The other account is yours.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yes, this person lives in my household. They are, however, another person.
We have only your word for that. Any penalties we assess to them will apply to your account as well. Be careful.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh, one last question on this note: Since you're running on my word aloneSomewhat , would I be penalized if this other user were to post in cleanup threads and I cast votes on things they posted? Am I restricted from casting votes due to the fact both our accounts have the same location? I'm asking because I don't wanna vote on anything they do and suddenly get slapped with a penalty for sockpuppeting when I'm not.
I personally would find that unfair Why? but Catermelon and I are both still held to wiki rules and we will follow them to the best of our ability.
TL;DR, will we function as two separate accounts in every capacity (Since we are two different people) or would I be penalized if I voted on their stuff? Just wanna make sure all my bases are covered and I'm not gonna stumble straight into being punished for something I'm not doing here. I'm completely fine with being held responsible for any penalties they incur— after all, security first— but I'd personally rather not accidentally get myself accused of sockpuppeting.

That's not a problem, but don't abuse our trust.
Requesting the mods to lock this TLP draft.
Consensus is that it needs to be discarded (and remade if there's anything salvageable in it), but based on what the sponsor said in edit banned, he'll restore it again when he's released.
I agree with this. While the banned troper acknowledged their mistake, they're also showing passive resistance and the desire to get the Black Swordsman Substitute "trope" out at all cost. It seems like they're refusing to accept the fact that the draft had many problems and can't be salvaged in its current state.
Yeah, I noticed that too. They aren't actually willing to work with people; they seem entirely convinced that everyone else is wrong. They're bound to just un-nuke the trope if they're released.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallForgive me for being naive, but is passively threatening to restore a nuked draft grounds for suspension/keeping someone suspended anyway, regardless of if the draft gets locked or not? Not asking for the mods to do anything, just wanted to know in relation to the above posts.

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallGranted it's context dependent here; not all nuked drafts were actually nuke-worthy. In this case though the consensus is that the draft was unsalvageable, so them restoring it would not only defy that consensus but would also just continue to beat a dead horse.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallYeah, like if it had just been on a draft that wasn’t ready yet it would be one thing. As it stands, this particular draft was unsalvageable and more than a few people agreed, so even if they’re willing to follow the rules this time the fact that their first thought is still to recreate and launch it as is isn’t a good sign.

I think you’re looking to deeply and people just have stuff on. Maybe Fighteer has decided to try and have a better Tropes-Life balance, but that wouldn’t be internal politics, it would be learning.
It’s not like the Edit Banned stuff is connected to forum drama, it’s all wiki-side stuff I think, mainly the standard grammar issues.
